Notes from the Pastor Dear Parish Family, Praise be Jesus Christ now and forever! Today’s Gospel emphasizes that God is so close to us, we can’t imagine, and much more ready and eager to give us everything that we need, if only we ask. But

somehow, we don’t always feel that ultimate love coming from God. A man named Jim, while in solitary confinement, wrote for some religious pamphlets. A hand-written note came back, “If you need anything else, let me know.” Jim says, “That one sentence, signed by “Justin,” changed so much for me. I had many dark thoughts in prison. The darkness vanished when I got that single sentence…My faith in humanity had been restored.” That phrase is the meat and marrow of Christian prayer. “If you need anything else,” God is saying to each of us, at any given moment in our lives, “just let me know.” Only the closest of our friends might say such a thing, right? Not some stranger you meet online. Sometimes we get into this exclusive “Jesus and me” type of Catholic faith, where we don’t even want someone else pushing their way into our pew on Sunday. God is asking us to show complete openness to the other person…a receptivity, a welcoming smile, willingness to listen even when we know we won’t like what we hear. When talking with non-believers, atheists, or the local bishop—real prayer begins simply with an open attitude that is willing to listen. Be a living prayer in the world—open your faith to someone in your own way, and watch the flowering begin to happen.

_______________________ This weekend we warmly welcome Brother Senan Gallagher, S.T., of the Diocese of Jackson, Mississippi who is with us to appeal for help for the Diocese of Jackson, the largest diocese east of the Mississippi River. Each year our diocesan Office for the Propagation of the Faith assigns us a missionary to our parish to ask our prayers and financial support on behalf of the missions, either here in the United States or throughout the world. The Catholic population in the Diocese of Jackson is around 50,000. The Diocese of Jackson has 65 counties, 29 of which do not have a resident priest. The church in Jackson is 3% Catholic. Mission Appeals make it possible for over 1000 poor and underprivileged children to attend Pre-School and Elementary School in the Diocese of Jackson. Because of these programs, they are able to feed several hundred children and young people in the summertime at their Mission Schools. Because of the generosity of the people who participate in our appeals, people who have the fewest opportunities are given choices they would never experience. St. Rose Parish has always been generous to the missions…..I hope and pray that this weekend’s “Mission Co-Op Appeal” will again show that same generous stewardship through your prayers and financial sacrifice in today’s second collection. Pray every day for the missionary work of the Church throughout the world and here in the United States. Thank you and God Bless You! Looking Ahead: On Thursday, August 15th we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, a holyday of obligation. As we did last year, we will again have an

Outdoor Procession to the Marina in Belmar for the Blessing of the Waters and Fleet. This will all take place after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Father Dave Baratelli, who assists us on many occasions here at St. Rose, is coordinating this event with the Borough of Belmar. I hope many of you will join us for this annual mid-summer event as you did last year. It was a loving expression and witness to our Catholic faith in honor of Mary, the Mother of God, as we walked and prayed through the streets of beautiful Belmar. Tell your family, friends and neighbors and join us on August 15th! I can’t tell you how grateful I am to all of your dear parishioners for your kind words of encouragement, Mass cards and prayers as I continue on the road to recovery from knee surgery. I am in full swing now with out-patient therapy. They push you to your limit but it’s all worth it and helpful in the end. For “lifting me up to the Lord’s healing grace” through your kindness and prayerful support I humbly say “Thank You” and ask the Lord Jesus and His loving Mother Mary to bless you and your family with an abundance of grace! Thursday, August 1st is the Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori, bishop and doctor of the Church. In 1732 he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists) which today numbers some 5,600 members. Take these words of St. Alphonsus for your prayer and reflection this week: “We must love God in the way that pleases him, and not just in a way that suits ourselves. God wishes people to empty themselves of everything and to be filled with his divine love.”St. Alphonsus, pray for us! A special welcome to all those visiting our parish this weekend—thank you for joining us in the celebration of the Eucharist! Have a good week and may God bless you and keep you always in His Love! Joyfully in the Lord, Rev. Msgr. Edward J. Arnister,

FOOD PANTRY NEXT SUNDAY will be our turn to refill the Pantry at the Belmar Methodist Church for the hungry of our community. Most needed are canned meats and tuna, dry milk or Parmalat, tomato sauce, crackers, soap, detergent, tea, coffee, sugar, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, canned juice, canned vegetables, pasta and canned spaghetti with meat. Please bring your items to the E Street entrance of our Church (East entrance). Thank you for your generosity! Last month we again collected close to 500 pounds of food. Even though the weight was slightly less than last month, the volume was greater. Please keep up the good work as during the summer the demand is usually higher due to all of the children being out of school.

GREG RYAN GROUPS Weekly Christian Meditation Group - Mondays, 7:00-7:45 pm. “The humility of meditation is to put aside all self-important questioning. To put aside self-importance means to experience ourselves poor, divested of ego, as we learn how to be. To be present to the presence. We learn, not out of our own cleverness, but from the source of wisdom itself, the Spirit of God.” From John Main, “Being Present Now,” DOOR TO SILENCE: An Anthology for Christian Meditation (London: Canterbury Press, 2008), pp. 82-83. If you have considered joining our little group, this book would be the perfect way to begin. At any rate, it would make a great “beach book” this summer. Hope to see you in September!
