status?
Status A recognized social position
that an individual occupies Don’t think of prestige. Every status involves particular
duties, rights, and expectations that guides behavior
A status defines who and what we are in relation to others
List four of your statuses in the four interior “boxes” of the Death Star.
Status Set All the statuses a person
holds simultaneously (at a given time)
A girl may be a Daughter Student Friend Soccer player
Ascribed Status A social position that
someone receives at birth or assumes involuntarily later in life
Examples include Daughter Sister Teenager Widower
Achieved Status A social position that someone
assumes voluntarily and that reflects personal ability and effort
Examples include: Honor student Olympic athlete Spouse Thief
Master Status A status that has exceptional
importance for social identity, often shaping a person’s entire life
Examples include: One’s occupation,
parenthood, wealth, an AIDS patient, your own past accomplishments, a handicap
Role Behavior expected of someone
who holds a particular status You hold a status and perform a
