Transcribe Interviews of RMPBS History Makers (Work may be done at home or at Denver station)

For 60 years, many people have been instrumental in the success of Rocky Mountain PBS. Station’s Archived Memories has preserved extraordinary oral histories of these individuals. You can be a part of this fascinating project by transcribing these interviews.

We will train you! Most videotaped interviews are 45-55 minutes long which equates to a transcript of 25-35 pages. An average of 6-7 hours is required to transcribe or proofread one interview. You may work at your own speed at home or at the station during the week. If you work from home, you should have a computer with a Word program and be capable of playing electronic audio files.

The skills you bring to the table should include: excellent listening skills including the ability to type audio files word-for-word according to the instructions provided; strong computer skills including the abilities to create Word documents, receive and send emails and knowledge of how to download files. If you are interested in this opportunity, contact Susan Barber [email protected].

Help Us Preserve Our Programming! Are you a fan of Rocky Mountain PBS and have enjoyed our programming over the years? If you answered yes, we would love to have your help preserving these productions. It’s both a walk down memory lane and a peek into the future.

Join other volunteers who are doing this preservation work with the Station’s Archived Memories project. Basic computer skills would be needed and database experience is a plus. You will be trained by fellow knowledgeable volunteers. This is an on-going weekly opportunity for 4 hours/week. For the first 2 months, you would need to be trained on Mondays. Following the training, the days and hours are flexible.

If this interests you (and we hope it does!), please contact Thomas Muja at [email protected]. Thanks!

Leadership Opportunity with Station’s Archived Memories Did you know that Rocky Mountain PBS has the ONLY volunteer-driven archive project among all the PBS stations nationwide? There are more than 30 volunteers working hard throughout the year. The award-winning Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) project is 16 years old and provides an incredible electronic time machine for RMPBS and the community.

Rocky Mountain PBS’s has existing leadership opportunities with SAM. We’re looking for self-starters, ready to offer guidance, and with either experience in history, archives and library sciences, or a leadership attitude and willingness to learn. The ideal candidates will have adequate time during the business week to spend on this important, volunteer-run project.

If interested, please email [email protected] for details. Join the team!

Front Desk Volunteers! Are you a supporter of Rocky Mountain PBS? Looking to spend some quality time with an organization that is deeply involved in its community? Support us by volunteering at the front desk!

As the Rocky Mountain PBS receptionist, you will be the first line of contact for our viewers, community members and business professionals who enter into the building or call our station directly. You will also receive calls for our radio station, KUVO 89.3!

Answering the phone and directing calls to the correct employee in the building is essential to navigate the flow of call traffic. Greeting our guests and notifying the employee they are meeting with is part of the duties as well. Behind the desk, you may also be given specific tasks from our employees, such as mailing duties.

We are looking to have volunteers cover the front desk when our current receptionist will not be able to. These shifts can range from half days to full days, and you will be properly trained. If interested, please contact [email protected].

Mountain PBS. For over 30 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This program introduces children to the world of broadcast news and, as a result, some of the Super School News alumni have gone on to careers in journalism and broadcast.

Volunteers will be assigned a school and work with a teacher and student team (1-2 coaching sessions at the school) to design their broadcast. Volunteer training is provided. In addition, volunteers will assist with assembling information (1 morning in August and December), orientation day (1 morning in September and January) and will attend the taping session at the Denver station.

We hope you will help sustain this legacy program. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] or Susan Barber [email protected].

Calling Volunteers and Staff at KRMA and KUVO: Submit Your Nomination for Annual From the Heart Awards! Calling on volunteers and staff at the KRMA station and KUVO to nominate a very special volunteer and/or a special Denver staff member—those folks whom you have observed giving exceptional and cheerful service to the Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO community. They exceed expectations and often work quietly out of the limelight. You may see these people, perhaps in a daily basis or maybe during a special event or project working quietly and efficiently with no thought of reward or accolade.

The nomination deadline is January 16, 2017. The nominations need not be elegantly written, just heartfelt. You will be reminded again in early January of the deadline. However, we’d appreciate your submitting nominations early while the idea is in your mind. The brief and simple nomination form is available online at www.rmpbs.org/heart or contact Susan Barber at [email protected]. Past recipients are listed below. While these individuals are no longer eligible for consideration, please use them as an example of what behavior exemplifies "From the Heart."

The “Other” Lives of Rocky Mountain PBS Volunteers Our volunteers are very busy people! In a volunteer survey from 2015, volunteers reported that, on average, they volunteer for 2-3 other organizations. Additionally, many volunteers hold full time jobs and yet manage to volunteer for RMPBS in the evenings and on the weekends. This wonderful volunteer spirit demonstrates a vibrant, engaged citizenry that makes Colorado a great place to live.

The “other” life for RMPBS volunteer Mike Cawthra brings smiles to all of us. You may have met Mike at the Bannock Street station front desk where he volunteers on a weekly basis or you may have met him through his work with Super School News. Mike is so generous with his time and his friendly, warm nature engages all. If you are really observant, you will notice that (starting in the fall) Mike’s snow white beard begins to grow and grow and grow. He is preparing for his very special job that comes during November and December and for which we think he is perfectly suited! He is always in demand as he spreads the holiday joy to all. Ho, ho, ho and thanks to Mike.

Nationally-recognized investigative journalist John Ferrugia who joined RMPBS earlier this year, will delve into some of the most pressing – and often unseen or misunderstood – issues facing Coloradans. Insight is in-depth, independent and incisive. It’s public media storytelling at its best. And it’s the kind of journalism that inspires the public to make Colorado an even better place to live. John and a team of investigative journalists – including former national correspondent Lori Gliha and Denver native Marybel Gonzales – will present thoughtful, thoroughly researched stories of significance for Colorado.

Take a Jazz Break! For those of you who are new to the RMPS family, you need to be introduced to the fabulous public radio station KUVO JAZZ (89.3 FM). Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO became "family" approximately three and a half years ago. Since 1985, KUVO – an independent, public radio station – has provided a rare blend of music and news. KUVO broadcasts the very best in jazz, Latin jazz and blues in addition to seventeen locally produced, culturally diverse programs. The mission is to provide distinctive music, news and informational programming reflecting the values and cultural diversity of our listener community. Thanks to the free KUVO app and the ability to stream the station live, KUVO has a worldwide listener community! Did you know that RMPBS staff member, Linda Hillshafer is researching and writing about jazz artists for KUVOjazz? Many of you may know that Linda manages viewer services for RMPBS. She is passionate about this new part of her job. Her pieces appear on the KUVO website under "Stories of Standards." Each week on KUVO radio, First Take (weekdays from 6-9 am) with Chavis (Steve) and Lando (Carlos) higlights a "Stories of Standards" segment about a jazz standard or tune from the Great American Songbook. Lando delves into the history behind each tune and plays different versions of the week’s featured composition all week long. (www.kuvo.org/topic/stories-standards)

For those of you who are life-long learners and who love music and history, “Stories of Standards” is a slice of heaven! So, read Linda’s piece below and go to www.kuvo.org/post/nuages-stories-standards and listen.

Page 14: Volunteer Opportunities: November 2016 - Amazon Web Servicespbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod... · December 14th, RMPBS is hosting a pre-screening (at the Bannock

Django Reinhardt by Linda Hillshafer Tune in to First Take with Lando and Chavis - weekdays from 6-9 am MT - for Stories of Standards to hear our favorite versions of this song all week long!

Django Reinhardt (1910 – 1953) wrote and recorded “Nuages” (French for clouds) in wartime France (1939). The melody is seen by some as expressive of Reinhardt’s melancholy regarding the Nazi occupation of Paris although the tempo can be greatly varied in different performances. “Nuages” went on to become one of Reinhardt’s most popular songs and during the war, when “La Marseilleise” was banned, was adopted by many as a form of alternative national anthem.

Reinhardt embraced music as a child and never ceased. He acquired his first instrument, a kind of banjo/guitar hybrid when 12 years old and started his professional career shortly afterwards. Reinhardt biographer Michael Dregni quotes bass player Emmanuel Soudieux as saying “Django was music made into a man.” In 1928 a fire cost him two fingers and came close to costing a leg as well; he spent two years recuperating and developing the primary form of the style he was to use the rest of his life. When World War II broke out he was touring England with Le Quintette du Hot Club de France. Violinist Stephane Grappelli stayed behind in England, but Django returned to France and managed to continue playing despite the Nazis’ persecution of his family and friends (Gypsy) and fellow musicians (jazz). A Luftwaffe official named Dietrich Schulz-Köhn, also known as "Doktor Jazz," is credited with helping to keep Reinhardt out of the concentration camps.

Groundbreaking techniques in chord arpeggios and finger styling made Le Quintette du Hot Club de France one of the more influential bands of the twentieth century. They introduced the concepts of “lead guitar” and “rhythm guitar” which have been widely adopted as has the use of guitars for percussion. His influence on guitarists has been widespread and strong, with many regarding him as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Chet Atkins placed him at number one on this list. Julian Bream, Carlos Santana, Mark Knopfler, Les Paul and Peter Frampton are among his admirers, while Jimi Hendrix named Band of Gypsies in Django’s honor. In addition, he was a great inspiration to guitarists who had injured hands, including Jerry Garcia and Black Sabbath’s guitarist Tony Iommi.

In 1951, while travelling home Django Reinhardt collapsed from a brain hemorrhage; his death at the age of 43 came far too soon, a tremendous loss for music and the world. He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1984.

KRMA-TV Began Broadcasting on Sunday Evenings In 1967 by Laura Sampson, RMPBS Volunteer and Founder of Station’s Archived Memories

November 5, 1967 marked a milestone date in the history of Rocky Mountain PBS when KRMA-TV expanded its telecasting week to include Sundays from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

One of the programs that aired that inaugural evening was a beautiful 30-minute KRMA production, "Soaring Over the Rockies." The production is important to the history of Rocky Mountain PBS for two reasons: “Soaring” premiered on the first Sunday that KRMA offered Sunday evening broadcasting and, secondly, it was the very first color show produced by KRMA for national release.

The KRMA production was one of six award programs selected from over 100 program ideas submitted to the Educational Television Stations Program Service (ETS-PS), a wing of the National Association of Educational Broadcasters. KRMA was the recipient of a $1,000 grant from the Reader’s Digest Foundation.

The program integrated a musical score with a relaxed narration about “sailplanes,” better known as gliders. At the time, flying in sailplanes was a fast-growing sport in Colorado. Producer, Walt Scheuneman, was quoted in a 1967 article in the Rocky Mountain News stating, "Most of us were pretty apprehensive about flying in a sailplane, but after that first silent and enjoyable ride, we were looking forward to the next trip." Conceived by KRMA Station Director, Jack Schlaefle, the program was produced and directed by Walt Scheuneman. The staff researcher and scriptwriter was Bill Thorn. Carlos Seegmiller and Dick Siceloff (a SAM volunteer) were the talented KRMA videographers who filmed the aerial and ground footage at the Black Forest Gliderport near Colorado Springs.

The 1967 KRMA-TV PROMO touted the first color show for national release saying "Creative aerial sequences take full advantage of the color medium as bird-like sailplanes skirt past the clouds,

then above them, until spread below lies a grand display of blues, browns and greens” and “a silent and open sky that brings man closest to living his oldest dream – to fly."

Thanks to the sixteen-year archive efforts of the volunteers of Station’s Archived Memories, photographs and memorabilia items related to this program have now been preserved to allow the RMPBS community to appreciate why "Soaring Over the Rockies" was a milestone production in the station’s history.
