To intensify the light /narrow the beam:
Turn the shade clockwiseto move the shade towardthe surface being lit, cast-ing a narrower beam oflight.
To diffuse the light /broaden the beam:
Turn the shade counter-clockwise to move theshade away from the sur-face being lit, casting abroader beam of light.

When focusing the light, be sure tograsp the front of the shade -- notthe back of the shade near the heatvents. The back of the lamp shade willget hot when used for prolonged peri-ods of time.
