A vintage that shows what Beaujolais is all about2011 is a wonderful vintage in Beaujolais. The wines, not as tannic assome of the 2009s, but richer and more substantial than the 2010s,show charm, poise and the opportunity for immediate enjoyment. They are very special.

The gamay grape needs heat at critical times, and 2011 went out of its way to appease it at the right moments. A spring heatwave ledto early flowering and after a wet July the sun returned, resulting in blazing conditions at harvest. The wines feel ‘sunny’ but also speak very clearly of where they come from.

Fine, distinctive wines were made everywhere, but two crus deserveparticular plaudits, reflected in the greater number of wines we havebought from them for this offer. They are Moulin-à-Vent – whose

dense, multi-layered wines combined the seriousness of a greatvintage with undoubted charm – and Côte de Brouilly. The latter is a tiny cru that rarely gets the limelight, but which deserves to in this vintage, having produced wines that are simply magical.

A nuanced viewThough the grape, gamay, remains the same, each of the tenBeaujolais crus and the numerous other villages make wines with different nuances and characters. 2011 is a fine vintage for wine drinkers to get to know them, and three mixed casesprovide tempting opportunities to do so.

Oak forests gave rise to the name of thisthe smallest of the ten crus. Full-flavoured,even spicy, and capable of ageing well forabout five years. The taste profile is similarto Moulin-à-Vent, but lighter.

Chénas, Vieilles Vignes, ChâteauBonnet, 2011Lovely full-flavoured Beaujolais, unoakedwith plenty of middle, sappy andminerally. Great food wine: coq au vin springs to mind. 13%ref BC-BJ5551 £9.50 bottle £114 dozen

The grandest of the crus with theweight and complexity worthy of goodBurgundy or Rhône. The soil is graniticwith seams of manganese and iron, saidto account for the wines’ added colourand depth. The best have the ability togain in complexity over time. Excitingly,2011 was a great vintage here.

NEW Moulin-à-Vent, Domainedes Rosiers, Georges Duboeuf,2011This estate is owned by one of the manyCharvets in the village of Chénas.Duboeuf buys the whole productionevery year and this is one of his flagshipwines. There are rich autumnal flavourshere, soft tannins and a style thatthough full-flavoured is perfectly ready to drink now. 13%ref BC-BJ5531 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

NEW Moulin-à-Vent, Châteaudes Jacques, 2011Fine, creamy Beaujolais from Louis Jadot. This has depth and Burgundy-like finesse and best kept for at least another six months. 13%ref BC-BJ5521 £13.50 bottle £162 dozen

Moulin-à-Vent, Clos desPerelles, Château deBeauregard, 2011This is the top wine from this estate and from a vineyard that is at the heart of the cru, close to the windmill.Complex, full-flavoured, dark and rich.A complete wine to savour to 2020.13%ref BC-BJ5591 £14.50 bottle £174 dozen

NEW Moulin-à-Vent, LaRochelle, Château des Jacques,2011 Lying on slightly higher ground, above the windmill, La Rochelleincludes perhaps the best plots in all of Moulin-à-Vent. This is full-flavouredand long and will have good ageingpotential. 2014-2020. 13.5%ref BC-BJ5501 £20 bottle £240 dozen

FleurieThe name suggests a delight to the sensesand the wines usually deliver. Fragrant, floral and full of charm, Fleurie is formany quintessential Beaujolais. A large cruincluding a number of distinguished lieudits, such as Poncié and la Roilette.

The Society's Exhibition Fleurie,2011Benchmark Fleurie from a lovely vintage:ripe, rich, fragrant and velvety. 13%ref BC-BJ5301 £8.95 bottle £107 dozen

Fleurie, Trenel, 2011Scented, suitably floral, round and soft: a good yardstick Fleurie from thisgenerous vintage. 13%ref BC-BJ5361 £9.75 bottle £117 dozen

Fleurie, Clos de la Roilette, 2011The name goes back to 1910 and a famousracehorse. The vines occupy one of the bestbits of Fleurie, very close to Moulin-à-Vent’s La Rochelle. Traditionally made, full-flavoured and generous wine. 13%ref BC-BJ5451 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen

Fleurie, Poncié, Château deBeauregard, 2011Poncié is a well-placed vineyard that pointsdead south, overlooking the village. Gamayripens well here and produces a rich styleof wine. Beauregard makes one of the bestand 2011 is a real charmer. Now to 2015.13%ref BC-BJ5661 £12.50 bottle £150 dozen

The Ten Crus of Beaujolais North to SouthThe crus’ tiny variations of soil type, exposition and climate create (at least) ten furthervariations on the theme. All shone in 2011.

Beaujolais andBeaujolais-Villages Value for moneyStraight Beaujolais from the south showsthe gamay grape at its simplest, while thenamed villages like Emeringes present awine with a little more character andcomplexity, often close to cru quality butinvariably better priced.

NEW Beaujolais, Domaine deChanteclair, 2011Fragrant, round and fruity gamay fromsouthern Beaujolais. Uncomplicated andbest served slightly cool with charcuterie.12.5%ref BC-BJ5381 £6.25 bottle £75 dozen

The Society's Beaujolais-Villages If there is a hint of Fleurie-like charm to this delicious 2011 blend, it is because a third of the wine comes from the village of Lancié, sandwiched between Fleurie and Romanèche. Round and rich withplenty of charm. 12.5% ref BC-BJ5341 £6.75 bottle £81 dozen

Beaujolais-Villages, Vieilles Vignes, Châteaud'Emeringes, 2011 From a ramshackle Second Empire pile,Vincent Davis makes a lovely, full-flavouredBeaujolais. Gutsy, characterful and excelswith food. 12.5% ref BC-BJ5671 £7.50 bottle £90 dozen

A White Beaujolais to tryThe grape is chardonnay and it isbecoming more popular in Beaujolais.Burgundy’s Mâconnais is not far away, yet the style is different: whiteBeaujolais is lighter with greater tension and freshness, even in thiswarm vintage.

NEW Beaujolais Blanc,l'Ancien Les Terres Dorées,Jean-Paul Brun, 2011Jean-Paul Brun is a highly respectedgrower who has made a reputation for his whites, in particular from thesouthern Beaujolais. This has finesse and a good deal of charm. 12%ref BC-BJ5541 £9.95 bottle £119 dozen
