Wednesday September 14, 2016 From Sue Swimming at Hampton Our swimming program is undergoing a review at the moment; we are aiming to provide a beneficial program for students, utilising venues that meet our requirements and most importantly have lessons scheduled at a convenient time. Over the last week the physical education teachers have been in discussions with pool managers to consider options, venues, availability and cost. During the last week we have had quite a number of parents complete the survey online regarding the swimming program. Surveys results included: 70% of children attend private lessons in out of school hours 75% noted that both technique and water safety are important 31% opted for a 10 day program 26% favoured a one a day a week program 23% noted that an open water venue and having a lifesaving focus are important. If parents would like to make a suggestion, please see the link to the survey below. The survey will remain open for another week. https://docs.google.com/a/education.vic.gov.au/forms/d/ e/1FAIpQLScfaWD5NsEkvLbFF7H3MxcOFMBdWlZdI-W5npDIkMjDVfF9tw/viewform Master Planning We intend to develop a master plan for our school buildings and grounds. The school is currently undergoing considerable growth in enrolments and this has placed pressure on teaching and play spaces. Factors to consider in the development of the plan include: Replacing existing single storey portable classrooms with 2 or 3 storey buildings, in so doing protecting the existing play space The possibility of reconfiguring some of the administration area in the main building to permit multifunctional use of office spaces The possibility of reconfiguring or replacing the existing arts building with a 2 or 3 storey building which will include a large indoor assembly area Installing a retractable roof over the quadrangle which would enable flexible usage of this outdoor area all year round Re-asphalting of all existing asphalt areas The development of a new sandpit area(s) The development of a sensory garden BE SUNSMART Hats must now be worn when playing outside at school

Master Planning We intend to develop a master plan for our school buildings and grounds. The school is currently undergoing considerable growth in enrolments and this has placed pressure on teaching and play spaces. Factors to consider in the development of the plan include: Replacing existing single storey portable classrooms with 2 or 3 storey buildings, in so doing

protecting the existing play space The possibility of reconfiguring some of the administration area in the main building to permit

multifunctional use of office spaces The possibility of reconfiguring or replacing the existing arts building with a 2 or 3 storey

building which will include a large indoor assembly area Installing a retractable roof over the quadrangle which would enable flexible usage of this

outdoor area all year round Re-asphalting of all existing asphalt areas The development of a new sandpit area(s) The development of a sensory garden

The installation of additional outdoor seating around the school The continued usage of neighbouring green spaces for sports programs including Castlefield

Reserve, Sillitoe Reserve, Thomas Street Park, Sandringham Athletics track, Trevor Barker oval etc.

The Buildings and Grounds team will be playing a pivotal role in the development of the plan; however if any community members are interested in contributing, you would be most welcome please leave your details at the office. Battle of the Boots The Battle of the Boots organising committee tallied-up the money from this year's event and was pleasantly surprised to find that almost $20,000 was raised; this was $3,400 more than last year. Listed below is the break-down of the numbers: Donation to Hampton PS $ 8,888.88 Donation to St Mary's PS $ 8,888.88 Donation to Peter Mac $ 2,000.00 Net Profit $19,777.76 I am delighted that the two local schools and a leading medical research organisation were the beneficiaries from such a wonderfully successful community event. Once again, my sincere thanks go to Mike Cahill who was one of the key organisers behind this highly successful event. Development on Hampton Street Bayside City Council has informed the school of a notice of an application for a planning permit at 427-461 Hampton Street and 82 Holyrood Street. The proposal involves the construction of a three to eight storey mixed use development over basement parking, comprising four ground floor retail tenancies, a food and drink premises, 108 dwellings and a subsequent reduction in the associated bicycle, car parking and loading bay requirements. School Council discussed this proposal and the associated implications and impact on our school last night. We have significant concerns regarding the height of the building at eight storeys and the inevitable increased traffic in very close proximity to our school. The current situation with traffic management at peak times of drop off and collection time is already problematic. The development will only exacerbate this situation and impact on safe access to school. There is no doubt that enrolments will increase as a result of the development, however if the eight storey plan comes to fruition this will place enormous pressure on our school. In the council’s Planning Design and Development Overlay - Schedule 12, it states that a building in the location opposite a school can’t be over four storeys. If any community members would like to discuss this development, please contact me at school to make an appointment. Kiwanis Build up Grades (BUG) Award Yesterday we had Charlotte McNamara from 1B, Silver Gums and Sarlinea Barker from 1C; Shining Gums receive the Kiwanis BUG award at assembly. They consistently displayed the following qualities and attributes during their Reading Recovery sessions with Judy Van Pelt and in class: a delightful and cooperative approach helpful and courteous manners diligence and enthusiasm persistence

Well done to Charlotte and Sarlinea for making such pleasing progress! I am grateful to Ley Raker

and the Kiwanis Club for their ongoing support to our children and school. Ley attends our end of

term assemblies regularly to present the awards.

Assembly Performances Thanks go to 5/6E, Wollemi who led the singing of the National Anthem at assembly yesterday. Our musical item featured the Senior String Ensemble including: Oliver Hill string captain – violin, Dominique Doig- string captain -violin, Oliver Horigan - violin, Patrick Hill and cello, Miranda McLean – cello, Olivia Briggs - violin and Lana Zaidenberg- conductor and violin. The ensemble played ‘Alone in the Universe’ from Seussical. This was a hauntingly beautiful melody encompassing 4 part harmonies. Traditionally it’s the beautiful duet with Horton and Jo Jo but yesterday they played 4 a part harmony with violins and 2 cellos. This was an impressive performance which showcased the considerable talents of our students. The ensemble rehearses every Thursday at lunchtime.

Academic Excellence Congratulations go to the following students who received an academic excellence award at assembly yesterday: Nicholas Capel from 2B, Peppermint Gums for demonstrating a commitment and enthusiasm

to develop and extend his thinking, knowledge and application in mathematics Max Anquetil from 2B, Peppermint Gums for demonstrating a methodical and thoughtful

approach to his learning in mathematics where he relishes a challenge and achieves commendable results.

End of Term 3 Friday is the last day of term and school will finish at 2.30pm. There will be a whole school assembly at 2pm, weather permitting in the quadrangle. I extend warmest wishes to all children, staff and parents for a happy and relaxing break. I hope that those heading off to some exciting destination travel safely; for those remaining in Melbourne I hope you enjoy your time with family and friends. I look forward to seeing everyone on the first day of Term 3 which is Monday 3 October. Sue Knight Principal
