What is the associate in arts in elementary teacher education for transfer program? The associate in arts in elementary teacher education for transfer is an interdisciplinary program which meets state guidelines in order to prepare students to begin their path toward becoming an elementary school teacher.

Students majoring in elementary teacher education develop critical thinking, problem solving, and written and verbal communication skills. As elementary teacher education majors, students have learning opportunities that are relevant to many types of careers working with children and parents including special education, elementary education, and social work. This major provides early field work experience working with children in an elementary school.

What types of career opportunities are there? There are two types of credentials for teaching in the public schools in California. One type is the Multiple Subjects Credential for teachers in a self-contained classroom, which generally means teaching in grades K- 6 or K-8. The other is the Single Subject Credential for teachers responsible for only one subject, which in general is preparation for teaching high school (grades 9-12). Both career options require a baccalaureate degree at a minimum.

Preparation for teaching may be useful for students who also wish to pursue careers in human resources, counseling, communication studies, recreation administration, social welfare, and corporate training.

What will it take to complete? The associate in arts in elementary teacher education for transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completing this degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. The associate in arts in elementary teacher education for transfer is consistent with the mission of the community college to assist students in achieving a seamless transfer to the CSU system.
