Food gardening is a popular activity that many Marylanders enjoy every year. Food gardening helps save money on fresh food, while improving personal and environmental health, as well as quality of life.
Plant your own food garden to• Experience the wonder of nature by
watching seeds grow into plants that you can harvest and eat
• Enjoy delicious, fresh-from-the-garden produce
• Feed yourself and your family nutritious, safe, home-grown food
When you grow your own food, you can have all of these experiences—and more!
We will teach you• How to choose and prepare your
garden site or container• The importance of soil and how to improve it• The best crops for beginners and the best
cultivars for Maryland• Non chemical, earth-friendly techniques to
combat weeds, diseases, and insect pests• How to prevent animal damage from deer,
rabbits, and other rodents• When and how to harvest
Vegetable gardening classes and workshops are taught by Master Gardeners at various community locations across Maryland.

• You can grow fresh vegetables, herbs, and berries in a plot as small as 4 ft. x 4 ft.
• Are you an apartment-dweller and/or have no diggable space? A backyard is not required! Grow edible plants in containers that fit on your deck, balcony, or front stoop.
