Great reasons to cycle to work • It reduces the cost of travelling to work. • It helps make exercise a part of your daily routine.• It’s quicker than you think: one mile can only take

5 minutes to cycle.• It reduces congestion on our roads, so improving air

quality and reducing CO2 emissions.

Why don’t you?• Make sure your bike is in good condition, take it to

the local bike shop for a MOT.• Plan your route online with the cycle journey planner

at www.transportdirect.info • Ask friends and colleagues for good routes to use.

Your local council will have downloadable maps and advice on their websites.

• Ask if your employer offers a tax-free cycle scheme • Look out for schemes that offer free one to one

cycle training.

Don’t forget you must have suitable lights and reflectors on your bike and we recommend you wear a cycle helmet.

Bus Operator Saver tickets

If you only want a ticket to get you to work and back with a specific bus operator you may find a bus operator saver ticket is better value for you. For more information visit your bus operator’s website or your local Metro Travel Centre.

They offer advice and support ranging from general information and maps to one-to-one cycle training and maintenance classes.

If you live just 2-3 miles from work why not consider walking, especially in the warmer months?

It reduces the cost of travelling to work and it is a great way to build exercise into your daily routine.

It’s quicker than you think: one mile can only take 10 - 15 minutes to walk depending on your pace.

Why not ask work colleagues, neighbours or friends who live nearby to see if they want to keep you company and walk with you?

If you live further away why don’t you?• Try getting off the bus one stop earlier and walking

the rest of the way.• Park further away from work and walk part of

the journey.• Leave the car behind and walk (or cycle) to the

Rail Station.

Walking for 30 minutes a day could mean you burn off 130 calories, the equivalent of a doughnut or

a small glass of wine.

Did you know that small changes in the way you drive can:

• reduce the amount of fuel you use by up to 15%?• save you up to £200 of fuel each year?• cut your annual CO2 emissions by 300kg?

Smarter Driving Tips • Check your tyres regularly to make sure they are

at the right pressure as stated in your car’s manual.• Improve the aerodynamics of your car by removing

roof racks when not in use.• Car extras such as the radio and air conditioning

burn fuel.• If you are likely to be at a standstill for more than 3

minutes switch the engine off.• Avoid stop-start driving; keep an eye on the traffic

ahead and slow down by taking your foot off the accelerator instead of braking.
