    Eye contact - amount and length of eye

    contact

    For example: In US women feel insulted and

    embarrassed at being looked at for, in their

    view, a prolonged period by Italian and

    French men. Conversely Italian and Frenchfemales may perceive US men as cold

    because of their relatively short eye contact

    Handshakes are common for both sexes, and may

    include grasping the arm with the other hand.

    DO shake hands with everyone when being introduced

    during a business or social meeting. However, men should

    wait for women to extend their hand first.

    Once a relationship develops, air-kissing on both cheeks,

    starting with the left is often added as well as a pat on the

    back between men.

    There are four types of distances:-

    Intimate distance is when the persons move or stand

    closely, touching each other.

    Personal distance is one or two feet.

    Social distance is three to eight feet.

    Public distance is about ten feet.

    In Italy and Latin America the personal space distance is

    much smaller than in Great Britain and Sweden. So when

    someone from Sweden travels to Italy, he or she is likely to

    feel quite uncomfortable interacting with a local person

    whose concept of personal space is quite different.

    The way we perceive time, structure our time and

    react to time is a powerful communication tool.

    Time perceptions include punctuality, willingness to

    wait, and interactions.

    "Time is money" is not a common phrase in Italy.

    In the north, punctuality is viewed as a virtue and

    your business associates will most likely be on time.

    Many companies are closed in August, and if they are

    open many Italians take vacations at this time, so it is best

    not to try to schedule meetings then.

    The Italian bureaucracy and legal systems are rather

    slow; therefore expect decisions and business actions to

    take time. The best times to make business appointments are

    between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., or after 3p.m.

    In Italy Purple Color is not used as it is

    considered unlucky.

    Gift Giving Etiquette

    Do not give chrysanthemums as they are

    used at funerals.

    If you bring wine, make sure it is a good

    vintage. Quality, rather than quantity, is

    important.

    GIFTS

    Do not wrap gifts in black, as is traditionally a

    mourning colour.

    Do not wrap gifts in purple, as it is a symbol of bad

    luck.

    Gifts are usually opened when received.

    When invited to someone's home, bring gift-

    wrapped chocolates, pastries, or flowers.Flowers mustbe given in even numbers, except for

    a dozen (12) or half-dozen (6), especially if roses.

    Avoid giving anything in a quantity of 17, as 17 is

    considered to be bad luck, or a doomed number.

    NEGOTIATIONS The Italians are voluble or very eloquent in their

    conversation whereas the Europeans are very

    reserved and talk less.

    In the north, people are direct, see time as money,

    and get down to business after only a brief period of

    social talk.

    . In the south, people take a more leisurely approach

    to life and want to get to know the people with

    whom they do business.

    Allow your Italian business colleagues to set the

    pace for your negotiations. Follow their lead as to

    when it is appropriate to move from social to

    business discussions.

    Negotiations are often protracted.

    Never use high-pressure sales tactics.

    Heated debates and arguments often erupt inmeetings. This is simply a function of the free-flow

    of ideas.

    Haggling over price and delivery date is common.

    FORMS OF ADDRESS

    When introducing a group of people yourself, it is

    proper etiquette to introduce the most senior

    members of the group first, followed by the

    women, and then any other members present.

    Italians prefer to do business with people they

    know and trust. A third party introduction will go a

    long way in providing an initial platform from which

    to work

    Forms of address are Signore (Mr) and

    Signora (Mrs) followed by the family name.

    You should only address someone by their

    first name if this is how they have introduced

    themselves, otherwise it could be seen as

    too informal and disrespectful.

    VISITING CARDS

    Generally the visiting cards or the business cards

    are printed on the both the sides.

    On one side the information is printed in the local

    language and on the other side it is in English.

    Do not exchange business cards at social occasions;

    but it is the norm at business functions and

    meetings.

    DINING ETIQUETTE

    If an invitation says the dress is informal, wear

    stylish clothes that are still rather formal, i.e. jacket

    and tie for men and an elegant dress for women.

    Punctuality is not mandatory. You may arrivebetween 15 minutes late if invited to dinner and up

    to 30 minutes late if invited to a party.

    If you are invited to a meal, bring gift-wrapped such

    as wine or chocolates.

    If you are invited for dinner and want to send

    flowers, have them delivered that day.

    Remain standing until invited to sit down. You may be

    shown to a particular seat.

    Table manners are Continental -- the fork is held in the left

    hand and the knife in the right while eating.

    Follow the lead of the hostess - she sits at the table first,

    starts eating first, and is the first to get up at the end of the

    meal.

    The host gives the first toast.

    It is acceptable to leave a small amount of food on your

    plate.

    Pick up cheese with your knife rather than your fingers.

    If you do not want more wine, leave your wineglass nearly

    full.
