MEN OF HOPE+GUEST KEYNOTE SPEAKERPastor Winston Hurlock is an ordained minister who has been a spiritual and dedicated pastor within the Ontario Conference for 24 years. He has served as the senior pastor at the Scarborough Seventh day Adventist church for the past 10 years.

He holds a B. A. in music and theology from Oakwood College, and an M.A in music and theology from Andrews University.

Additional certification was earned at the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Some of his accomplishments include serving as a Music Coordinator, over a fourteen-year period, for Camp Meetings organized by the Ontario Conference, and travelling as a soloist with a team for the ‘It Is Written’ telecasts.

He has travelled extensively preaching, and lecturing on different subjects that helps to enhance the spiritual lives of humanity. He has also spent many years researching and studying contemporary issues pertaining to music and

worship, notably those deemed critical to the Church. His passion is to inform, educate, and help resolve key generational concerns among church members, with the purpose of facilitating a healthy, dynamic, spiritual environment.

Most recently he was awarded The Queen Elizabeth 11 Diamond Jubilee medal for his contribution to the community and to Canada at large.

+SEMINAR PRESENTERPastor Cameron Johnston is an ordained minister, author, international speaker and stress fitness coach.

He is a burn-out survivor who has helped tens of thousands of people across Canada, U.S. and Australia manage modern stress better.

He will be presenting the seminar Cooling Down the Stress Soup - a unique and fun seminar where participants master eight stress resilience secrets that everyone in our fast-paced and busy world needs to know.

WOMEN’S MINISTRIESAnother power packed weekend drew women from all over BC, and even Washington State (including 15 non members and nearly 30 for their first time) to our Women’s Ministries Retreat.

Our featured speaker, Dr. Mable Dunbar, presented our ladies with an amazing testimony, tools for healing, spiritual growth and empowerment to fulfill God’s purpose for us. Many said that this was the best Women’s retreat yet.

Devotional speaker Tara Emmons challenged the ladies with her forthright testimony and spiritual insights. Our youngest speaker, a senior at FVAA, Jennica Santomin impressed us all with her Biblical wisdom and presentation.

Sabbath School presentations by various ladies using their gifts of singing, testimony, and drama were incredible and such a blessing! We were privileged to have Beverly Logan, marketing director for Pacific Press, give her seminar presentation which showed us that we are not alone in not having the “perfect” life and how God works in these situations.

One of the highlights of the retreat was the makeovers done by professional hair dresser/stylist Wendy Fong and a team of helpers. Two lucky ladies were chosen Saturday night and revealed on Sunday. Transformations were met by a whole roomful of ladies standing, clapping and exclaiming about how terrific the ladies looked.

I would like to give Glory to God for the progress of Women’s Ministry and how women are getting acquainted with Jesus and knowing about him for the first time, please remember them in your prays our non members.

TUMBLE RIDGE SDA CHURCHFestival of Thanksgiving

On Sabbath, October 6, the church members in Tumbler Ridge participated in a Sabbath School entitled “Festival of Thanksgiving.”

Each member expressed gratitude in some way for the way God has lead in their life. The motto of the church, “Here Bring Your Wounded Heart,” was mentioned in Jere’s testimony about being thankful that God makes healing possible.

June, who always relates to life by singing a song about daily situations, was thankful for having proved true our opening song, (God Will Take Care of You, led by Michelle and Shannan) in her own life and the life of her husband, Wes, who is still alive after years of proving the doctor’s wrong.

Wes said that he was thankful for June and verified that God has always been there for them in very time of need.

Loretta expressed thanks for being raised in a home with parents who believed in the Bible because, if she had not read the end of the Book, she might have been tempted to give up.

Ellis, was especially thankful for Psalms and Proverbs, where so much is written about praise and Thanksgiving.

Visitors Amy and Evelyn also participated; Amy is thankful for online class she recently discovered about proof of the Bible from historical data, and Evelyn was thankful for her late husband’s positive influence upon her life.

The Sabbath School closed with the reading of a story about a man in a prison camp who made the best of every situation, written by his granddaughter who praised her grandfather for the positive outlook she learned from him.

It was decided that, no matter what life brings, there is always something for which to be thankful.

The arrangement of fruits, grains, nuts and vegetables (from Jere and Linda Franklin’s garden) on the piano testified to God’s goodness in providing a bountiful harvest.

Much of the food at the TR Church Thanksgiving Day feast was from church member’s gardens; the mashed potatoes, sliced tomatoes, beet salad, and apple pie.

DUNCAN SDA CHURCHBack to the Light

“And we know that all things work together for good for them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

Noah Coleman knows that all things work together for good for those that love the Lord. He has witnessed God’s miraculous work in his life, and he knows he can trust God to care for him in the future.

As far back as Noah can remember, he always knew there was a God. As he grew up, though, he didn’t always follow Him as he knew he should. When he was a young adult, he was part of the Rastafari movement and was taught that Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Ethiopia in the mid-twentieth century, was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. After reading the Bible, though, he knew it wasn’t true. So he continued to search for truth.

A few years later, after Noah met and married his wife and had two children, he saw an ad in the paper for the Seventh-day Adventist church. His family was struggling financially, and because Noah was vegetarian, he decided to call the church to ask for some food. A friendly woman brought him some food and also invited them to church. It took a while, but his wife decided they should attend. Noah and his wife studied the Bible and Noah decided to get baptized. They went church for a while, but at some point, Noah got discouraged, separated from his wife and stopped attending church.

“I basically walked away from God for 20 to 25 years, but I always had that prick in my conscience. I never forgot anything I had learned,” explains Noah.

And God didn’t forget about him either. Many years later, Noah moved to Lake Cowichan on Vancouver Island. God started speaking to him in his dreams and reminding him that he needed to come back to the Light. At the same time, he started to have serious problems with his landlord and realized that only God could help him with his struggles.

“I was into Buddism and had an alter with deities. I took them all down and put them in a box,” says Noah.

Then, at the beginning of 2012, he called the Duncan Seventh-day Adventist church and asked for a ride to church on Sabbath. Church member Marj Rooke got the call and came to pick Noah up. He started attending regularly and soon after, with the help of members, relocated to Duncan. God gave Noah the strength to make a lot of changes, but he was still “straddling the fence.” Then he started reading the book To Know God: A Five Day Plan and knew he had to make a commitment to God because the evil forces started to attack him.

“One night while I was sleeping, something came right on top of me and pinned me down. I could feel the grip holding onto my shoulder blades. And there was a disgusting smell.”

The evil forces harassed him for a couple of weeks until one night Noah told the demons to leave in the name of Jesus. Instead of fear, he felt peace, knowing that they could do nothing to him. He knew he had been bought with a price, and he belonged to Jesus.

“The more Satan tormented me, the more I knew that God loved me,” says Noah

Since then Noah has had health problems that have caused him to be hospitalized. He has also been diagnosed with kidney failure and diabetes, and he lost the hearing in his right ear, but he continues to trust God to heal and guide him.

On September 29, there was rejoicing in heaven and in the Duncan SDA Church as Noah was baptized. And he knows that, in spite of his daily struggles, God is with him.

“I feel peace like a river – like I’ve never felt before in my life.”

SUMMER IN ETHIOPIAFive people from the BC Conference spent three weeks in Africa this summer, but instead of heat, they found cold and torrential rains.

Steve and Mary Marshall from Smithers and Sheila Javorsky and Heinz and Elfriede Volk from Summerland signed up to do ShareHim campaigns in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Steve preached in a church, Mary in a church under construction, Heinz in the auditorium of an academy, Elfriede alternated between an orphanage and a village school, while Sheila was under a tarp in someone’s yard. When this collapsed under the weight of the rain, she moved her equipment and audience into the humble home.

In preparation for the trip, the three people from Summerland held a Mother’s Day yard sale in the parking lot of the Penticton Seventh-day Adventist church to raise money for Bibles for new believers. But the sale yielded more than anticipated, so that they could also make donations to the Hamlin Fistula Hospital, the L’Esperance Orphanage and Children’s Village, as well as Prison Ministries.

In Ethiopia alone, up to 7,000 women, some only girls, suffer loss of bladder and bowel control because of injuries suffered through prolonged labor in childbirth. As a result they become social outcasts. One woman, in a futile attempt to control seepage, had even lost use of her legs. The fistula hospital not only performs 4,000 reconstructive surgeries per year, free of charge, but also offers education, midwifery training, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy. After touring the Fistula Hospital and purchasing handicrafts made by the patients, the Summerland trio left a sizeable donation.

Founded 27 years ago, the L’Esperance Orphanage and Children’s Village also received a monetary donation, as well as items made and collected at home. It is the only orphanage in the country that allows religious education. Home to more than 1,000 children, the institution seeks to be self-sufficient. A herd of dairy cattle and fields of vegetables ensure that the children get a healthy diet. Any excess is sold to raise money for other needs. In addition to providing basic furniture, an on-site factory also gives occupational training to the older boys. Not all children at the Village are total orphans, but all are in need of care.

Further donations helped finish a baptistery in Mary’s church and bought Bibles for Prison Ministries. The proceeds of the Mother’s Day sale also provided reading glasses for school children and shoes for barefoot youngsters in mud-hut villages.

Before returning home, the speakers visited Axum, home of the world’s largest monolith and the ruins of the Queen of Sheba’s palace, as well as Lalibella, with its underground churches carved from stone.
