Get to know your BaZi Structure... and Understand How You Approach the World

Joey Yap’s BaZi Structures series of books comprises 5 individual titles to help you interact with the world.

While your Day Master shows you who you are, your Structure tells you about your behaviour and attitude in relation to the world. In this series, your strengths and weaknesses in how you relate to people and events in terms of work, family, and friendship all come to the fore. Each book in this series concentrates on one specific Structure, and provides clues on ideal careers, job roles, and wealth paths for that Structure.

Furthermore, these 5 guides will provide the blueprint to knowing why some people are the way they are, and what to do to help you deal with the varied and colourful characters in your life.

What is a Structure? You’ve already heard of the concept of the Day Master in BaZi – but the BaZi Structure goes one step further. If the “Day Master” reveals your character traits, your “BaZi Structure” peels off another layer to help you understand your behaviour and attitude towards the people and events in your world. Your BaZi Structure reveals your mode of operation in life and how you relate to your friends, family and your work.

The intensity and value of your Day Master’s traits are determined by your BaZi Structure. Regardless of whether you’re a CEO, manager, or student – if you’re a Resource Structure person, you’re a Thinker! Find out which Structure you belong to and learn more about yourself and others.

The thorough thinker with a wealth of information; you use knowledge as power.

The Resource Structure personality in a nutshell is thoughtful, analytical, and purposeful. You are precise in your approach, and possess layers and depths that others discover slowly. You are the still water that runs very deep, with potential for genius.

On the flip side, your ability to procrastinate runs you into trouble on occasion. Your incessant need to know “why” gets you stuck when others are moving forward.

The BaZi Structures: Knowing Your Place in the World

The idea for the BaZi Essentials series of books arose out of a desire to simplify the sophisticated study of Chinese Astrology into something a little easier to digest. Too many people are only familiar with the “12 Animal Year Signs” type of Chinese Astrology. But the true form of character traits in Chinese Astrology stems from the Day of Birth, not the Year of Birth. My previous series on the BaZi Essentials: 10 Day Masters focused on exactly that – the individual Day Master based on your Day of Birth.

If you’ve read my books on BaZi, BaZi – The Destiny Code and BaZi – The Destiny Code Revealed, or even taken any classes on the subject, you probably know that there is really NO end to BaZi studies. There may be a finite amount of theory or principles to learn, but the methods of application and interpretation are varying, complex, and hence, endless. That’s precisely why BaZi can become a lifelong study and education.

The book you’re currently holding in your hands belongs to the BaZi Essentials: 5 Structures series. It takes one step higher into demystifying the complex nature of BaZi studies to help you understand how you use BaZi your daily life, and to navigate through the events and people in your world.

But how is the BaZi Structures series book different from the Day Master series? Well, consider BaZi to have 3 layers of complexity based on the information gleaned from your day of birth:

Page 13: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

13

10 Day Masters (Level 1)

Who You Are - The Day Master reveals your basic character; your essential personality

traits, strengths and weaknesses fall under this.

5 Structures (Level 2)

How You Approach the World - The Structure reveals your personality in relation to the

world. In essence, your BaZi Structure shows you your modus operandi – why you behave

the way you do, and what attitudes you project in life.

10 Profiles (Level 3)

What You Do - The Profile reveals your individual lifestyle. It helps you understand what you do in the world, and how your actions are manifested. Your BaZi Profile explains your ‘style’ of operation in life.

It’s about how you function as a unique individual.

If you don’t know what’s your BaZi chart or your Structure, don’t worry. You can log on to my website at www.joeyyap.com/bazi5s to find out your Structure instantly.

It goes without saying that if you’re a Resource Structure, you’re obviously more than just the characteristics listed here. You’re not only a thoughtful, analytical advisor with the tendency to procrastinate and become scattered when under pressure! This book will, however, provide you with a general blueprint as to how you approach your life.

What are your most negative and positive personality traits? What are you like as a friend, as a parent, and as a worker? What type of careers and job roles are best suited to your disposition, and how to you deal with everyday problems, challenges, and issues – whether in your professional or personal life? What is your attitude to wealth, and how would you best go about making the most of your talents to gain more wealth? In other words, what’s your path of least resistance to wealth?

All these questions and more are addressed in this book, so that you’re able to see exactly how the Resource Structure person is reacts to and interacts with external influences.

But bear in mind that in BaZi, the concept of STRONG or WEAK elements play a big role in determining how much of a Resource Structure you are. These factors are too varied and complex to be discussed here in a simple book (it is, however, a fundamental section of my professional BaZi courses and Destiny Code series of books). Suffice to say that to read and understand this particular book, you merely need to be aware of this concept. If your Structure is strong, you’ll exhibit more of these tendencies outlined in this book.

The strongest element in your chart determines your BaZi Structure. However, it is entirely possible for one person to have a mix of Structures in his or her chart because of the different elements. As such, not everyone is a pure Structure. The second strongest element in your chart is known as your secondary BaZi Structure, and determines your secondary nature. Consider it your sub-behaviour, if you will. The print-out of your chart that you obtain from my website as mentioned above will clearly indicate the second strongest element.

Page 15: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

15

A healthy BaZi Structure is one where the strengths of all the elements are balanced; one where a single element is not too strong. When an element is too strong, it becomes known as an extreme BaZi Structure. This is typically indicative that more of the negative traits of that particular structure will prevail. You do need to bear in mind that this book shows you the traits of the Resource Structure in general, and doesn’t take into account the particularities of your entire BaZi chart! Therefore, it also becomes extremely valuable and important to get a complete BaZi consultation from a professional, or to take a full BaZi course and learn and master the interpretation skills for your own individual use.

BaZi is a study that helps us understand ourselves, make better decisions, and ultimately, enables us to shape our life for the better. These compact, easy-to-understand guides are designed to help you fulfill your life’s goals in a more meaningful way. I hope to make BaZi a relevant a part of your life – and may the knowledge that you gain serve you in all of life’s endeavours.

I wish you much pleasure and excitement in your journey towards understanding BaZi and applying it in your life.

INTRODUCTION

Thinkers

Resource Structure people are known as the thinkers. They are analytical and deep, with problem-solving abilities. They are the consummate advisors who always have the facts and figures ready at their fingertips (or, if they don’t, they will ensure that they will find it out!). They are often very methodical and precise in all that they do. They love having information, as knowledge is what motivates and spurs them on to greater heights.

These individuals excel in questioning the how’s behind every project, task, information, or procedure. They are generally very reflective and quite in behaviour, and are always keen to get to the root cause or the heart of the matter.

As such, they can also be very structured and orderly. Resource Strcuture people can always be counted upon to research everything thoroughly before they embark on anything.

On the other hand, Resource Strcuture individuals can also be extremely pedantic and slow, with a tendency to be dull and too concerned with facts and figures. They drag things out in the hopes of being able to get more information, and sometimes their over-thinking tends to hinder their decision-making progress. Instead of acting fast, they tend to think even more on what needs to be done without ever reaching a conclusion.

FAITHFULDevoted till the endThe Resource Structure personality is often a true and loyal friend to others. They are very faithful to the friends they make, because they don’t make them easily. Unlike other Structures that are more extroverted and gravitate toward people easily, Resource Structure is more introverted, and takes time to get to know people. They need to build up their trust slowly. They are careful with the friends they select, because once they make friends, they tend to make them forever.

As such, when they do become friendly with people and start caring for them, they are not merely fair-weather friends. Resource Structure people are very faithful and loyal, and will stand by their friends through thick and thin. They are very dedicated, and look to making friends in order to find the ideal relationship.

Page 23: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

Loyal•Constant•Not a fair-weather friend•Friendship for friendship’s sake•

KEY FACTS

23

Resource Structure people make friends cautiously, and they are keen to stay in the background. They are ready to listen to complaints and apply their analytical mindset to the problems of their friends. They are naturally concerned about the people in their lives.

THOUGHTFULPutting friends firstAs friends, Resource Structure people are compassionate and kind. If their friends are having a bad day or a bad time, they will be quick to express concern and enquire if there is any way they can make them feel better. However, they tend to be more arm-chair advisors instead of being the types who get their hands dirty by doing the rough work.

In fact, Resource Structure can be moved to tears with compassion over a friend’s plight. They don’t just sit back and consider their friends’ problems; they feel their friends’ feelings and emotions, too. They tend to give all of themselves if they care about their friends by being extremely empathetic. But they must be secure in the friendship before this happens.

Page 25: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

Compassionate•Empathetic•Sincere•Value friends as people•

KEY FACTS

25

As such, Resource Structure friends are very sincere. They are not the phony types who merely hang about for a bit of fun and then disappear. Also, they are willing to see things from their friends’ perspectives and give them the benefit of the doubt before they make any conclusions. They don’t see their friends as mere ‘apparatus’ to their lives; they value their friends for the people they are.

PURPOSEFUL LISTENER Always with a shoulder to cry onIn contrast to some other Structures who are keen to talk all the time and never get a word in, the Resource Structure is a very good listener. They listen deeply and with a purpose, and they analyse the problems of their friends and try to offer the best solutions.

As such, the Resource Structure friend is the ideal person to head to with all of one’s complaints! They are extremely patient and will not judge others for wanting to whine or vent. They understand the need for their friends to find a safe outlet for their emotions, and hence make very good listeners because they don’t interrupt or get their own two cents in all the time.

Page 27: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

Attentive•Non-interfering•Gives friends room to talk•Does not judge or interrupt •

KEY FACTS

27

Also, because Resource Structure people don’t need to be in the limelight or have all the attention focused on themselves, they are content to stay in the background. They rarely vie for attention among their friends, and so if their friends need them to listen, that’s exactly what they’ll do. Unlike the Companion Structure, they won’t be trying to compete with their friends for the “Who has the saddest story” competition!

INSECUREAlways thinking they’re not good enoughResource Structure people are by nature inward-looking, and are prone to over-thinking and analysing matters. As such, they have a rather insecure sense of self and are not the brash, confident types of certain other Structures. Because of this, they tend to question their place in the universe, as well as their place in friendships and relationships.

They are also not very secure in social settings, and prefer to remain unobtrusive or unobserved in the background. Being in the spotlight is not for them. Resource Structure people prefer to live vicariously through their friends, and therefore can be quite tiresome because they’re reluctant to go forth and

Page 31: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

KEY FACTS

forge their own experiences. Getting the Resource Structure to try something new or unexpected can sometimes seem like an exercise in futility.

Also, because they feel insecure, they tend to manifest their insecurities in a variety of contradictory behaviours that may confuse and upset their friends. Their friends could have a hard time deciphering their behavioural patterns.

WITHDRAWNPlaying their cards close to their chestBecause of their introverted nature, Resource Structure people are rather discreet about their feelings and thoughts. They are not the ones shouting out their emotions from the rooftops! They can be very withdrawn and hard to pin down at times. Lots of times, their heads are also up in the clouds – or they’re thinking about some deep problem.

Resource Structure people can drive their friends crazy because of this trait. Sometimes, knowing what the Resource Structure person really feels or thinks amounts to nothing more than a guessing game, with all the participants fully exhausted at the end of it.

Page 33: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

Reclusive•Reticent•Not good at expressing •affectionSeemingly distant•

KEY FACTS

33

Resource Structure is also not very good at expressing affection, and hence may recoil if their friends do so – not because they don’t like or appreciate it, but simply because they’re unsure of how to respond. This means that being friends with the Resource Structure person is akin to walking on eggshells at times, or like having to play with kid gloves.

Page 34: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

VENGEFULTaking matters very personallyResource Structure people invest a lot into their friendships. Despite their contradictory behaviour, or sometimes even because of it, in their heart of hearts their friendships with people mean a lot to them because they don’t make friends easily. When they do connect to people, they expect it to mean something, and often invest more emotion into it than how it appears on the surface.

Because they’re loyal and devoted, they also expect that of their friends – 100%. Therefore, if they find that their friends are not as equally devoted or loyal, then all hell can break loose. They will become very antagonistic and behave in a manner that conveys their suspicion and mistrust.

KEY FACTS

Furthermore, they can be quite unforgiving. Friends may have to apologise several times before they are able to get through to the Resource Structure person. Or, if things turn out worse, some Resource Structure people can become rather vengeful and harbour resentments for quite some time. They may act alright on the surface, but their unhappiness and anger may sometimes leak out in strangely cutting remarks and cold behaviour patterns.

CRITICALNitpicking faults and flawsResource Structure individuals are, by their very nature, used to analysing and picking apart everything. That is just how they think and approach the world. They need to dissect matters, get to the heart of it, and understand how things work. This is their way of making sense of what’s going on around. Unfortunately, this microscopic vision is also trained upon the people who surround them. As such, they can be very critical friends. They don’t offer compliments easily, and are sceptical of the compliments afforded to them. Indeed, if you want to make a Resource Structure person feel good, be prepared to be offended in turn once you compliment them on something. They will have a way of turning it around and making the person who offered the compliment feeling bad! This is also due to their generally insecure nature that is capable of seeing

the good in themselves – although this trait in particular is typically seen in people with extreme or unhealthy Resource Structure charts. They have a hard time letting go and just letting things be. It’s part of their constant need to make everything perfect, and their drive to create an ideal state of being. Unfortunately, this can sometimes wreak havoc on a relationship, especially as they don’t offer their opinions until asked, and may give an overly critical opinion because they’ve considered things from all angles.

PRINCIPLEDExpects high standardsResource Structure individuals as parents are not lax and ne’er-do-well types. Just like they uphold certain standards in their personal conduct, Resource Structure parents expect their kids to grow up principled and well-intentioned. They instil values in their children that they want them to fulfil.

They have high standards in what they expect from their children in this regard, but this is not a bad thing. It’s important to Resource Structure that their children know right from wrong and adhere to quality standards in terms of speech and behaviour. They don’t enjoy raising kids to become half-hearted citizens of the world.

DISCIPLINEDGiving their kids a sense of structureAs parents, Resource Structure is very organised and methodical. They are disciplined about their own lives, and in the same vein, they promote a sense of structure in their children’s lives. They value time management and a sense of organisation, and don’t like things to be helter-skelter.

They maintain their home in good order, and by extension, maintain the household schedule in good order as well. Resource Structure parents are very careful to pay attention to the finer details, and don’t like to disrupt their children’s lives with negligence and messed-up schedules.

Because they abhor mess and clutter, Resource Structure parents who have kids who are just a little bit messier will be ready to pick up after their kids! Resource Structure simply can’t bear to live and think in a place that is not well-maintained and well-organised. They like things running smoothly.

ENCOURAGINGValuing scholarship and talentThe Resource Structure parent is the type that takes pride in his or her child’s achievements. Because Resource Structure enjoys thinking and learning, and values knowledge, they cultivate the same type of ambitions and dreams in their children. Resource Structure people can typically be very creative, or almost genius-like in their approach to their interests and passions.

In that same way, they encourage their children’s academic, scholarship, and learning pursuits. They will never say no to getting their children more books, texts, science kits, or math books – anything at all that furthers their children’s interest in whatever subject they’re interested in.

KEY FACTS

Knowledge is highly valued in the Resource Structure’s house. They create an ambience that is highly conducive to the pursuit of knowledge and learning. Their emphasis on discipline and structure spurs their children on in this regard. Resource Structure parents will be the proud parents cheering their kids on during prize-giving day, or during science festivals or debates.

SELFLESSSacrificing their own needs for those of their children’sResource Structure people are deeply concerned about the welfare of their children, and consider their own kids as being extensions of themselves. They consider their children’s success to reflect on them. They value their children and the bond they have with them – as such, they can be very emotional and be ready to sacrifice any aspect of themselves for their children.

Naturally, Resource Structure is reticent on the outside, so they rarely express it in their words or actions. However, their love and consideration for their kids run very deep. No matter what is going on, the Resource Structure parent will strive to ensure that his or her children are comfortable and happy first before attending to anything else.

KEY FACTS

They are typically the ones giving up the best piece of meat to their kids during dinner, selling a treasured heirloom to put their kids through university, or allowing their middle-aged children to move back into their homes once they’ve lost their jobs. Their love knows no bounds. However, if they have a particularly negative chart, they can become pestering, nagging parents – the kind who keeps asking “Have you eaten already?” “Have you taken a bath?” and similar such questions!

PERFECTIONISTSetting impossibly high standardsTheir value for perfection and methodical actions, combined with their idealism and love of knowledge, makes the Resource Structure parent a very demanding one indeed. They are, in fact, perfectionists and expect the best from everything – including their children. Sometimes, they forget that their children are humans – with messy and complicated behaviours and actions – instead of precise, error-free facts!

As such, they can set impossibly high standards and demand too much from their children. When their personality traits are manifested in a negative way, Resource Structure parents are akin to a pressure cooker – they place their children in a very stifling and heated environment, expecting

them to transform into ideal, perfect versions of children as envisioned in their minds.

Because of this, Resource Structure parents may tend to rebel against these strict guidelines, and opt to become the opposite of what their parents want them to be. Having to live up to high standards all the time can become very exhausting. Resource Structure parents who are smart will know this, and stop their demands from becoming too unreasonable or unrealistic.

CONVENTIONALJust a tad too meticulousResource Structure parents also suffer from the “too perfect” syndrome themselves. They care too much about being precise and meticulous that sometimes they lose their essence of fun. Too often, the pursuit of accuracy can be very boring, and yes, rather tedious.

As a result, Resource Structure parents can actually bore their own children into stupefaction! It seems impossible that anyone can be so pedantic and particular about rules, steps, and methods, but Resource Structure always proves them wrong. As parents, they’re always going over the same issues and orders over and over again just to ensure that their kids get it right.

Page 55: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

Can be dull and boring•Too pedantic•Too concerned about rules •and regulationsForgets how to have fun•

KEY FACTS

55

Also, Resource Structure parents sometimes have a hard time just letting go and cutting it loose. They’re often worried about making a mistake, or doing the wrong thing, or making a mess, that they are able to suck the fun and joy out of some of most playful things – which incidentally enough, usually requires mess and imperfection.

Page 56: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

MARTYR-COMPLEX“I did it all for you...”One of the Resource Structure’s good points as a parent is its ability to be selfless and self-sacrificing in the pursuit of love and happiness for its children. However, on the flip side, if this particular trait is taken too far or manifests in a negative way, the Resource Structure parent becomes a martyr.

In those situations, they never fail to remind their kids just how much they’ve sacrificed for their children’s happiness. If they find that their kids are a just a little bit different from them, or diverting from the path that they’ve so clearly laid out for them, Resource Structure parents is not above using the martyr-complex to elicit some amount of guilt from their kids.

Again, this is a trait that can make their children rebellious or plain uncommunicative and uncooperative. However, Resource Structure parents often don’t see the danger of playing martyr, and once they get into the habit, it’s hard for them to get out of it! It’s never appealing to take on the role of a victim or sufferer, especially since their kids never really asked them to do so in the first place.

EMOTIONALLY MANIPULATIVE“Don’t you love me? Why are you doing this?”Strangely enough for a Structure that is not particularly comfortable with displaying emotions, the Resource Structure is really good at manipulating it – especially when they take on the role of parent! In fact, they’re very adept at pulling the right strings to make their children feel bad.

Resource Structure parents tend to sulk when they have a disagreement with their children. Sometimes, they may event erect a ‘Great Wall’ between them and their children, or launch a ‘Cold War’ against their kids by maintaining a stoic silence and icy coolness when their feelings have been hurt. It’s not so much that the Resource Structure parent is mean-spirited, but more to do with the fact that he or she is unsure how to express ‘ugly’ feelings: those of anger, hurt, disappointment, and sadness.

Thus, they use questionable methods to convey their feelings to their children. They are also not above trying the method of inducing guilt, or making their children feel bad for hurting them. They will brood in the corner during the family dinner, or put on a sour face during breakfast. Their methods are so patently ridiculous sometimes that it could be funny if it wasn’t also very aggravating. Their children no doubt feel that they sometimes have to play the role of parent to their Resource Structure mother or father!

As far as you’re certain, one can never know too much, or stop knowing. All this makes you a veritable walking encyclopaedia among your comrades. In fact, you’re even prone to genius, and have internal creative tendencies (like being a poet, or a songwriter).

You’re very serious about all that you do, and like to have a sense of purpose guide you. You’re not one to simply waste your time trying things out for fun, or being a wayward straggler. Your sense of focus helps you accomplish many things.

Idealistic•

You believe the best in others and the world, and try to fulfill that idealistic notion in all that you do. While others may sigh that you have your head in the clouds, you carry on doing your best with the conviction that ideals can be realised.

However, you don’t want to be treated to a lecture about how those things are made from start to finish. As such, you tend to be dull and don’t really shine in a group.

Pessimistic•

You tend to focus too much on the negative side of things, forgetting how to remember and value the positive. As such, you have a tendency to be dispirited and demotivated fairly regularly, and your listless spirits may influence others too. You already have it mapped out in your head how things will end badly, even before you start. You don’t take risks as a result of this pessimistic mindset, as well.

Insecure•

All your thinking leads you to think too much about yourself, which leads to an insecure sense of self. You have an image of yourself that is disproportionately low compared to who you really are, and all that you’ve achieved.

Selective Attention •

You have a tendency to pay attention only to things you want to focus on, and completely avoid the rest. This can drive other people crazy, as you often come off inconsiderate and uncaring simply because you don’t want to be exposed to certain stuff.

Hypochondria•

You can be super-paranoid and preoccupied with your state of health, and need constant reassurance from doctors or others that you’re fine. A simple cold can be elevated to the levels of a serious disease in your hands!

THE ‘THINKER’Analytical and probingThe Resource Structure person is the ultimate thinker. They tend to analyse everything, and are never content with just accepting things for what they are. Information proves to be both their motivation and inspiration. They are never going to be satisfied until they’ve received sufficient information about a project or a task before proceeding to act on something.

As such, Resource Structure individuals are very knowledgeable, and are some of the most well-read people one will ever come across. They are very curious individuals and are probing by nature. Their very favourite question is likely to be “Why?”, followed by a “How come?” Resource Structures are very adept at digging and digging until they find their source of information.

STRUCTUREDTaking it step by stepHand-in-hand with their propensity for knowledge is the Resource Structure’s affinity for methodical steps in whatever they do. They don’t believe in random or spontaneous modes of action or problem-solving because they do not deal well with ambiguity, uncertainty, and confusion. In fact, that is the very antithesis of what they believe in. Resource Structures need to know that they are following a very specific plan that takes them from Point A to Point B with all the necessary steps laid out in-between.

Others can count on the Resource Structure for always having a system and adhering to it. Not for them the slapdash, rush-and-tumble type of operation usually favoured by those of the Companion Structure! A lack of an organised structure will surely send the Resource Structure into an indignant frenzy of disapproval. They never set to solve a

They work according to the rhythm of their own internal clock, and as such will as much time as they need.

Their steady and balanced approach makes them highly approachable! PROCRASTINATORSWhy do today what can be done tomorrow? The very same qualities that make the Resource Structure person a thoughtful and dependable colleague or employee are the very same qualities, if taken to an extreme, can be his or her weaknesses. The primary quality of weakness can be defined as an almost instinctive need to procrastinate or delay. As we’ve read earlier, the Resource Structure is not the type to jump into anything headfirst.

While this is good in the sense that it can prevent mistakes and grievous errors as a result of being impulsive, rash, or harried, procrastinating doesn’t do the Resource Structure person any favours, either. In fact, they spend so much time thinking about the why’s and how’s of a situation or task that they may sometimes completely miss a deadline, or hold off on submitting a project until it’s too late. While they may think that

Page 85: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

KEY FACTSAlways late•Forces delays•Puts off a deadline with distractions•Unable to rush when needed•

85

they’re working – by doing more research – most of the time, it’s just a distraction tactic that contributes to procrastination.

In a fast-paced working world, this is often a liability if not addressed sooner. If a Resource Structure person gives himself ample time to do the homework and work on the research, it may not be such a bad thing to procrastinate – some people can feed off the adrenaline and work well under pressure, after all. But the problem is, Resource Structure types rarely work well under pressure. Hence, procrastination is a way for them to delay the inevitable; but what they don’t realise is that they’re only making things worse for themselves.

CAUTIOUSPlaying it safe – one too many timesNo one can be faulted for ever calling a Resource Structure person a daredevil. There is no derring-do in their repertoire of tricks. They are more often than not bound to play it safe, and stay well within the prescribed boundaries. For some reason, though they never seem to fail to question everything, they don’t seem to question the limits that have been placed around them!

But perhaps that’s an unfair accusation. It’s precisely because they think so much that they tend to over-think matters. Resource Structure people are always contemplating the what-ifs, wondering if something is going to work out or not. As a result, they become very careful in all they do, and are almost always loathe to take a risk because there

Page 87: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

KEY FACTS

87

is always the chance of something going wrong.

Contrast this with the person who is always ready to take a risk – such as the Companion Structure. Being able to exploit an opportunity when and if it arises requires the ability to jettison preconceived notions and to simply go for it! But the Resource Structure person contemplates, muses, and ponders over matters too much that sometimes it becomes a liability. It keeps them in the comfort zone at all times.

Page 88: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

INDECISIVETo be or not to be, that is the questionResource Structure people have trouble making a decision and coming to a firm conclusion. Again, this is due to the vast amount of data and knowledge that they’ve collected over time. After awhile, all this pondering over the many facts and figures they’ve amassed leads to only one thing: confusion.

When confused, the Resource Structure person doesn’t know whether to go right or left. As she ponders over this, she thinks about the problems and issues involved with turning right. Then, she thinks about the problems and issues involved with turning left. After awhile, she can’t tell apart what’s bad or good with either one of those choices, and thinks about it some more.

But ask them for a solution or an alternative way of doing things better, and they often come up short. For the most part, Resource Structures tend to evade responsibility. It’s not that they’re not upfront and steady in character; it’s just that they’d rather not claim responsibility for something. Claiming responsibility implies that one must do something about it. And Resource Structure is much more comfortable being an armchair critic!

Consultants•

These days, consultants are needed everywhere – from the financial industries, to the environmental firms and business solutions. Consultants need to study information, process it, and then give the best advice possible to their clients. This is a dream job made for Resource Structure types. They are thorough and precise, and enjoy taking their time in clarifying things to their clients. Resource Structure individuals will not be the type to rush through the information.

Both these fields require long hours of work – probing, analysing, dissecting – and a keen attention to the precision of the methods and the results. Page 99: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

pie charts for emphasis!). Resource Structures like certainty. But people are uncertain, unstable, and sometimes unknowable entities. For that reason, a Resource Structure person who is made to constantly work with and interact with people (in a PR role, for instance) will find her enthusiasm for work fast diminishing.

Also, because Resource Structure people are very precise and spend hours in their heads every day, they don’t excel at small talk. They lack the requisite capabilities needed to smooth over social gaffes and play up social niceties. They’d much rather read a book, frankly. They are rarely the life of a party. So Resource Structure needs to avoid getting into a job that requires them to win over customers and clients. (Telling them what to do is another thing. That’s why they’re successful as consultants.)

OBSTACLES TO WEALTH

Page 103: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

103

A key problem that gets in •the way of the Resource Structure’s attainment of wealth is that they have trouble telling apart their real desires from what is just wishful thinking.

They often build unrealistic •dreams and expectations where wealth is concerned, and find that they are unable to meet those demands. As such, they give up on it altogether.

Resource Structure people •also tend to procrastinate, and lose out on valuable money-making opportunities because of this. While thinking is an asset, it can also prove to be their weakness.

Another serious obstacle •is that Resource Structure people are not money-minded in the least. In essence, quality of life is more important to them than big ambitions for more financial security. They are too proud and lofty in mind and ideal to consider themselves to be ‘simply mercenary’, and this can prove to be quite a genuine hurdle in acquiring more wealth.

Resource Structure people •also tend to be lazy. This will seem to be at odds with their ways, but it isn’t because they value security and a comfortable life over the possible anxieties and potential lucrativeness of a risky project or endeavour. As such, they can become complacent and miss out on wealth opportunities altogether.

Page 105: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

105

Being able to take a gamble •on wealth also requires the ability to see one’s mistakes and admit to them, before moving on to another solution. The Resource Structure’s misguided focus on an attempt to ‘save face’ will cause them to sit out from accepting responsibility, instead of making the most of out of the opportunity.

Their inability to see the •bigger picture. In focusing on the details, some of which lose context when seen at a microscopic level, Resource Structure individuals go for small gains instead of contextualising things and seeing the bigger picture – and hence taking a small risk and going for bigger gains.

BEST PATHS TO WEALTH

Page 107: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

107

Resource Structure people •relate best to the world through information. As such, their best source of income comes from capitalising on their knack for knowledge and disseminating it to a wider audience.

Resource Structure individuals •can make it big by managing organizational structures, like Donald Trump or Warren Buffet. They can apply their knack for knowledge and information-gathering to consult and advice for leading businesses and investment bodies.

With the right kind of support, •Resource Structure individuals can travel the path of a visionary and start their own business from scratch, like Steve Jobs. He used his innate talent and skills for detail-oriented methods and creation to lead one of the world’s largest computer brands of all time.

Resource Structures can •also capitalise on their knowledge to become a skilled professional who is simply competent enough in her field that everyone flocks to her – whether it be an accountant, doctor, or consultant. The Resource Structure’s propensity for reliability, precision, and intelligence can make them some of the most sought-after professionals in the business.

Page 109: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

109

Because the Resource •Structure likes to play it safe, they will find that making money the safe way actually works for them. Why? Because they have the patience and temperament to wait it out instead of expecting quick returns. In this sense, it makes sense that they draw-up a long-term savings and investment plan that might not make them wealthy overnight (or even in the near future), but will see them comfortably settled off in a decade or so.

If they tend to •ramble off or lose focus, you need to be focused and have a workable action plan. Press for decisions and get them to make those decisions.

Despite their •propensity to do the hard work that often takes place in the background, the Resource Structure person wants to be heard. So ensure that you always give him or her the room to speak. Use face-to-face settings to allow this to happen.

If you know people who belong to the Resource Structure and want to know how to best work with them (as colleagues) and manage them (as an employer), read on for some hints:

Page 113: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

113

Speak slowly and •deliberately with them, and give them time to process the information. This is because they are already thinking things over as you say it to them, and processing the information very carefully. Give them the freedom to do this. Many others who nod quickly at what you say are simply not paying attention!

It helps if you’re •more organised, with all your details lined up. If you have the facts to back it up, the Resource Structure individual will respect you all the more.

You need to be •doubly-organised for them. Or, if they’re valuable, hire them a good assistant to keep track of things.

Don’t generalise. •When dealing with the Resource Structure person, be specific and detailed. They will be able to work with you better when they know what you’re talking about.

Page 115: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

115

If you need them to •think fast and come up with a swift decision, do some of the homework for them. This saves them from having to do all the research, thereby delaying a decision and causing a potential lag or loss.

Deadlines need to •be enforced, and this must not be easily pushed back or overlooked. The more you start to take deadlines loosely, the easier it becomes for the Resource Structure person to overlook them the next time.

IDENTIFYING THE EXTREME RESOURCE STRUCTURE PERSON

At the workplace, it will be fairly easy to spot the Resource Structure person with extreme qualities. Read

Deal with it by: Giving him all the details, but only insofar as the details and facts he needs. It will be important for you to take the upper hand. Like a monarch that only allows his subjects to know the information that he wants them to know, you have to be a little creative in conveying to him that you’ve given him all that he has to know – and then providing him with a deadline.

He needs to •know everything about the project. When he means everything, he really means everything. No detail is too small, no fact is too extraneous. If it’s possible to throw in the entire kitchen sink into the project, he is willing to do that as well. He is forever collecting information and will not rest until he feels he has enough – which can be never.

The “ANALyzer”

Page 119: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

119

Deal with it by:Pressing for constant updates, and scheduling regular meetings. With each, ensure that you have all your facts lined up. Most importantly, ensure that a deadline is always respected. Once he starts bending around one, it can become a regular habit.

He can postpone •decisions until the next Armageddon. His delaying tactics know no boundaries, and can seriously get out of hand if it’s not curbed at the start. He will have incessant questions on the same topic, asking about the same issues over and over again to see if he gets varying answers. In the meantime, the project sits by... unfinished.

Deal with it by:Letting him be. As long as his boredom is not killing anyone, there is really no big deal about someone who likes to pontificate on the facts and figures. But do gain control of project meetings and objectives by steering the conversation around back to its original intent.

He is constantly •tedious, and sometimes even boring. He can lack enthusiasm and often presents long chunks of information to others that is of no interest to them. He can be very non-committal, and it’s hard to get him to enthusiastically agree or disagree with something.

Page 121: BaZi Essentials - Thinkers (Resource Structure)

121

Deal with it by:Asking him to list out specifics. Sometimes, he often has a legitimate grouse to bring up, but may lose sight of it in light of all the complaining. Making him list out the details can help focus the matter. Then, ask him for a plan to solve it. He will enjoy being entrusted with coming up with a strategy (as that’s what he does best) that he won’t even realise that he’s being given responsibility.

He is constantly •whining and complaining about the situation at work. He can take an extremely pessimistic and negative view, and be highly critical of other people and other situations. While he is constantly gr iping, he endeavours to take no real responsibility to change the situation or solve the problem.

THINKERS 智慧型RESOURCE STRUCTURE
