Get to know your BaZi Structure... and Understand How You Approach the World

Joey Yap’s BaZi Structures series of books comprises 5 individual titles to help you interact with the world.

While your Day Master shows you who you are, your Structure tells you about your behaviour and attitude in relation to the world. In this series, your strengths and weaknesses in how you relate to people and events in terms of work, family, and friendship all come to the fore. Each book in this series concentrates on one specific Structure, and provides clues on ideal careers, job roles, and wealth paths for that Structure.

Furthermore, these 5 guides will provide the blueprint to knowing why some people are the way they are, and what to do to help you deal with the varied and colourful characters in your life.

What is a Structure? You’ve already heard of the concept of the Day Master in BaZi – but the BaZi Structure goes one step further. If the “Day Master” reveals your character traits, your “BaZi Structure” peels off another layer to help you understand your behaviour and attitude towards the people and events in your world. Your BaZi Structure reveals your mode of operation in life and how you relate to your friends, family and your work.

The intensity and value of your Day Master’s traits are determined by your BaZi Structure. Regardless of whether you’re a CEO, manager, or student – if you’re a Companion Structure person, you’re a Connector! Find out which Structure you belong to and learn more about yourself and others.

The Connector who engages others; you are persuasive and inspiring.

The Companion Structure personality in a nutshell is the friendly, gregarious one who wields tremendous influence. Motivating people is your forte. Charming and a good conversationalist, you like to be in the thick of things and are always the life of the party.

On the flip side, you’re sometimes a tad bossy and a little too demanding. You’re prone to getting people to give exactly what you want and how you like it.

The BaZi Structures: Knowing Your Place in the World

The idea for the BaZi Essentials series of books arose out of a desire to simplify the sophisticated study of Chinese Astrology into something a little easier to digest. Too many people are only familiar with the “12 Animal Year Signs” type of Chinese Astrology. But the true form of character traits in Chinese Astrology stems from the Day of Birth, not the Year of Birth. My previous series on the BaZi Essentials: 10 Day Masters focused on exactly that – the individual Day Master based on your Day of Birth.

If you’ve read my books on BaZi, BaZi – The Destiny Code and BaZi – The Destiny Code Revealed, or even taken any classes on the subject, you probably know that there is really NO end to BaZi studies. There may be a finite amount of theory or principles to learn, but the methods of application and interpretation are varying, complex, and hence, endless. That’s precisely why BaZi can become a lifelong study and education.

The book you’re currently holding in your hands belongs to the BaZi Essentials: 5 Structures series. It takes one step higher into demystifying the complex nature of BaZi studies to help you understand how you use BaZi your daily life, and to navigate through the events and people in your world.

But how is the BaZi Structures series book different from the Day Master series? Well, consider BaZi to have 3 layers of complexity based on the information gleaned from your day of birth:

Page 13: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

13

10 Day Masters (Level 1)

Who You Are - The Day Master reveals your basic character; your essential personality

traits, strengths and weaknesses fall under this.

5 Structures (Level 2)

How You Approach the World - The Structure reveals your personality in relation to the

world. In essence, your BaZi Structure shows you your modus operandi – why you behave

the way you do, and what attitudes you project in life.

10 Profiles (Level 3)

What You Do - The Profile reveals your individual lifestyle. It helps you understand what you do in the world, and how your actions are manifested. Your BaZi Profile explains your ‘style’ of operation in life.

It’s about how you function as a unique individual.

If you don’t know what’s your BaZi chart or your Structure, don’t worry. You can log on to my website at www.joeyyap.com/bazi5s to find out your Structure instantly.

It goes without saying that if you’re a Companion Structure, you’re obviously more than just the characteristics listed here. You’re not only a socially-engaged connector with the propensity to be occasionally self-interested and manipulative! This book will, however, provide you with a general blueprint as to how you approach your life.

What are your most negative and positive personality traits? What are you like as a friend, as a parent, and as a worker? What type of careers and job roles are best suited to your disposition, and how to you deal with everyday problems, challenges, and issues – whether in your professional or personal life? What is your attitude to wealth, and how would you best go about making the most of your talents to gain more wealth? In other words, what’s your path of least resistance to wealth?

All these questions and more are addressed in this book, so that you’re able to see exactly how the Companion Structure person is reacts to and interacts with external influences.

But bear in mind that in BaZi, the concept of STRONG or WEAK elements play a big role in determining how much of a Companion Structure you are. These factors are too varied and complex to be discussed here in a simple book (it is, however, a fundamental section of my professional BaZi courses and Destiny Code series of books). Suffice to say that to read and understand this particular book, you merely need to be aware of this concept. If your Structure is strong, you’ll exhibit more of these tendencies outlined in this book.

The strongest element in your chart determines your BaZi Structure. However, it is entirely possible for one person to have a mix of Structures in his or her chart because of the different elements. As such, not everyone is a pure Structure. The second strongest element in your chart is known as your secondary BaZi Structure, and determines your secondary nature. Consider it your sub-behaviour, if you will. The print-out of your chart that you obtain from my website as mentioned above will clearly indicate the second strongest element.

Page 15: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

15

A healthy BaZi Structure is one where the strengths of all the elements are balanced; one where a single element is not too strong. When an element is too strong, it becomes known as an extreme BaZi Structure. This is typically indicative that more of the negative traits of that particular structure will prevail.

You do need to bear in mind that this book shows you the traits of the Companion Structure in general, and doesn’t take into account the particularities of your entire BaZi chart! Therefore, it also becomes extremely valuable and important to get a complete BaZi consultation from a professional, or to take a full BaZi course and learn and master the interpretation skills for your own individual use.

BaZi is a study that helps us understand ourselves, make better decisions, and ultimately, enables us to shape our life for the better. These compact, easy-to-understand guides are designed to help you fulfill your life’s goals in a more meaningful way. I hope to make BaZi a relevant a part of your life – and may the knowledge that you gain serve you in all of life’s endeavours.

I wish you much pleasure and excitement in your journey towards understanding BaZi and applying it in your life.

INTRODUCTION

Connectors

Companion Structure people are the connectors of the world. They’re friendly, accommodating, and pleasing, and are typically known as the consummate networker. They usually tend to know anyone and everyone, and thrive on creating connections with and between others. Companion Structure individuals have superb social skills, and are engagingly eager to please. They are usually very friendly and outgoing individuals in the workplace. They do not hesitate to get involved in things that they would excel in, and usually go about it with infectious energy.

When Companion Structure individuals are of a strong or healthy chart, they tend to be extremely persuasive and friendly individuals who wield a lot of influence. They are adept at winning people over. They also like excitement and thrive on adventure and fast-paced action, and usually are unable to become suited or used to routine and structured organisation.

Companion Structure people with weak or unhealthy charts can manifest the flipside of those positive qualities, and become rather manipulative, crafty, and cunning. They sometimes use people simply as a means to an end. Sometimes, they may also be very dual-sided in their character. They value strength and power, as well as reputation, and may occasionally see themselves justified in getting ahead of weaker people in order to get their way.

ACCOMMODATING Able to ‘click’ with others easilyCompanion Structure individuals are very accommodating, persuasive, and inspirational, and others often feel good around them. That in itself enables the person who falls under the Companion Structure to make friends easily and connect to others well. They are always on the lookout for chances to meet people and will go out of the way to make others feel welcome and comfortable. They’re keen to mingle with others.

They are very adept at breaking the ice with strangers and in forming useful friendships with others. They don’t intimidate quiet or shy people with their behaviour and know how to approach them on their own terms at the start. They are forthcoming with their friendship and don’t wait around for others to start it.

Page 23: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

KEY FACTS

23

They are also the kind of people who are always keen to expand their social circle or group of friends. They’re not content to simply sit back and be happy with the number of friends they already have. Being able to add more spice to their social groupings is something that they enjoy doing, and take pride in. Whenever someone seems to be hanging out alone by the fringes, Companion Structure will be there to bring him or her into the fold.

LIVE-WIREEnergetic and inspiring excitement With people of the Companion Structure, there is never really any dull moment. They are not into sitting around and doing nothing. They like impromptu action and are always thinking up new activities or things to do. Companion Structure people excel at organising group events and are very much into finding things to do for their friends. Compared to people of the Output Structure, Companion Structure folks don’t like to steal the limelight. They simply enjoy company, and revel in it, although they may not have many close friends.

Other people tend to gravitate toward Companion Structure individuals. Their friends know that they can always have a good time around them, with much merriment, noise, and fun! One does not have to sit around

and be bored out of one’s mind while around the Companion Structure person. Social interaction is very important to them.

They often think up creative and interesting ways to be together with others. Nothing is beyond them – fun and games, or even intellectual activities, or group dinners and events and like wine-tasting, sushi-making, and the like. Trust them to plan a picnic to a nearby waterfall, or schedule a round of Paintball. It makes them happy to do things with their friends, and this happiness is often contagious.

SPONTANEOUSAlways up for anythingCompanion Structure is nothing if not spontaneous and ready for some action that comes out of the blue. They are very spur-of-the-moment type of people, and they don’t believe in having to stick to an organised structure or routine entertainment – which admittedly in friendships do not actually bring about any sense of fun. They have quick reflexes and quick thinking, and are very capable in instigating last-minute surprises and activities.

They are always ready to jettison their shackles and do something completely unexpected and out of the ordinary. Combined with their sense of fun, this makes them people that others want to be around. If ever a friend is feeling down and out or simply depressed, one can count on the Companion Structure

KEY FACTS

27

to come up with something that will chase the blues away.

Their sense of impulsiveness and spontaneity bodes well for networking, because they’re always up for meeting new people and making a new friend! Their strong assets like in mingling and building connections with people, and a spontaneous approach to life actually bolsters their strengths even more.

SELFISH“It’s all about me, me, me!”On the same spectrum as their constant need for attention, Companion Structure also tends to be selfish. They always think about how something or someone affects themselves, but they rarely consider what the implications may be for their friends who are in the same situation. As such, they always look out for their own self interests first.

Say there are two friends who need to get to a place that is unfamiliar. Companion Structure will be the first to hitch a ride with someone else and leave their friend behind. This is because Companion Structure people usually have a dual personality, or split sides. This complexity of a personality that can switch about quite suddenly often puzzles or confuses other people, and so many find it hard to understand them. More often than not, it comes across as self-interest even if it is not.

Page 31: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

KEY FACTSLack empathy•Very focused on the self•See things from a narrow •perspectiveHave trouble understanding •their friends

31

They have a hard time maintaining balance in considering their own needs and those of their friends. They lack empathy and sympathy, and tend to see things through their own viewpoint as they’ve always been used to doing that. In addition, they’ve been used to accepting others do that, too, so they see it as something that is fairly normal and expected. In fact, most Companion Structure people will be surprised to know that some of their friends consider them selfish!

SELECTIVE LISTENERWhat did you say again?Companion Structure people rarely pay the right type of attention to their friends, because they tend to filter information through their own (admittedly self-interested) perceptions. They have their own biases that are hard to rid of, and as such only pay selective attention to the information that they want to hear. If they don’t like what they’re hearing, they can simply act as though they didn’t hear it!

Sometimes, they’re used to hearing their own voice, and expect that their friends only want to hear theirs! When it’s their time to listen to their friends and be the one offering sympathetic shoulder to cry on, they have some difficulty getting into the role. Some of

KEY FACTS

33

the ways in which they become bad listeners is by not paying attention, or by always switching the focus back to themselves.

Companion Structure people also make use of other their friendship with others, and tend to take things for granted because of all those filters they have in place for their selective and judicious listening.

Page 34: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

NEEDY“Tell me why you like me... again”As befitting their nature, Companion Structures can be extremely needy and insecure in their friendships. They need to be told over and over again what their friends find loveable in themselves, and need to be constantly reassured that all is going well with themselves. This is largely because they feel good around people, and need constant feedback on their good points from others. They tend to be weaker without the presence of others to mirror their strengths back to them.

As Companion Structure people often make excuses for their own behaviour, they become insecure and wonder if others can see through it, and whether others judge them for it. This feeds their paranoia and creates a sense of potent neediness. Friends

may get tired of this because it becomes very exhausting to constantly pacify the Companion Structure person and let him or her know that he or she is always the best!

Companion Structure people only express their emotions when they feel safe, or when they know that they’re not going to be rebuffed or mocked for doing so. As such, they very rarely take the initiative to express their fondness or warmth for their friends first. They always need to be the ones who hear it first.

INCONSISTENTBlowing hot and coldCompanion Structure people tend to vary or fluctuate greatly in the way they are. They have rather noticeable dual natures, in that they can be warm and engaging one minute; cool and distant the next. They are highly affected by their passing moods and emotions.

Because of this, they are always changing their mind about things. The goal post keeps moving and others often find it hard to relate to Companion Structure’s changeability. It’s hard to predict what Companion Structure wants, but instead of being fun like it could when their charts are healthy and they’re manifesting spontaneity, it becomes instead rather exhausting.

Page 37: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

KEY FACTS

Fluctuating moods•Two-sided nature•Prone to sudden changes of •mind May be unreliable•

37

For this reason, they tend to lack friends or are prone to upsetting or disappointing people fairly regularly. This is because they don’t necessarily keep to their word due to a last-minute change of mind, are constantly late for appointments, and don’t know how to convey what they want. Other people see them as unreliable and trustworthiness, even if Companion Structure people don’t mean to be that way.

A FRIEND TO THEIR KIDSNo strict boundaries erectedAs a parent, the Companion Structure person brings in all of their qualities of partnership and wanting to be buddies in their relations to their kids, as well. They act more as friends to their children than as actual parents or supervisors. They don’t alienate their kids by setting up strict boundaries that prevent natural interaction from occurring.

Companion Structure parents are also good at making spontaneous choices and decisions, and they don’t raise their kids with a stern disciplinarian stance – like how a COMPANION STRUCTURE parent might. Instead, they tend to be lax with their guidance and allow their children to largely do as they please (but within reasonable limits).

KEY FACTS

43

Often, the Companion Structure parent will have good relations with his or her children because of this. They are open to what their kids have to say, and don’t insist on setting formal boundaries that increase the gap and lessen the level of communication. They also like getting to know the friends of their children and their respective parents, thereby being in the loop and well-versed with the important people in their children’s life.

ACTIVITY-ORIENTEDThe family that plays together, stays togetherAs a parent, the Companion Structure individual is committed to doing things together as a family. They’re always planning activities and events that will bring both parents and children together. Because they’re very socially-inclined, they also enjoy bringing in extended relatives and making it a right party if there is the means to do so!

Companion Structure like their kids, and by extension, their family, to bond together through shared activities that will lead to future memories that the family can look back upon together. They want to cultivate closeness and togetherness through experiences in which each member of the family can participate.

Because Companion Structure personalities tend to be naturally spontaneous and gravitate towards fun, their kids often enjoy these family activities and not resistant to participating. Companion Structure parents focus on making these activities enjoyable and exciting, with ‘fun’ being a key word. They don’t bore their children because of their ability to appreciate impromptu, unscheduled play and goofing off.

MOTIVATORSpurring their kids on to greater heightsAs parents, Companion Structure people are prime motivators. They are always very encouraging of the pursuits and activities their kids indulge in, and because they are very child-like themselves, don’t hold their children to their mistakes and misfortunes forever. It’s important for Companion Structure that their kids are inspired and motivated to do better.

They often strive to do this by example. In fact, Companion Structure parents are great cheerleaders for their own kids. This is a good thing, because their children often feel appreciated and secure as result. Their children aren’t afraid to try new things with a motivational parent at hand, encouraging them to do better.

Companion Structure parents also like to instil a sense of hope in their children. Their aim in motivating them to get through life is to provide them with a base for future achievements and success. PROBLEM-SOLVERTakes the lead and gives ordersIn their family and capacity as parent, the Companion Structure person takes charge and is the supervisor. When things go wrong, they get into action, and actively enter in a problem-solving mode. They are not the ones to stand idly by and wait for the solution to come from somewhere or someone else.

As such, their children often come to them as the go-to person in the family. If the Companion Structure person is married to someone else who is unable to deal with problems in a useful way, then their ability to take the lead and bark out orders actually comes forth as a very good thing indeed!

They don’t enjoy problems piling up and creating a sense of disharmony at home. Most importantly, they don’t want this to ruin the sense of playfulness and freedom that their children enjoy. Because of this, Companion Structure parents can be very proactive in ensuring that problems get solved as soon as they arrive.

EMOTIONAL BLACKMAILING“Do as I say, or else...”When their qualities manifest itself in a negative light, Companion Structure parents can resort to a certain form of emotional blackmail. While they will try their best to cajole and persuade their children to do something, this tactic sometimes just does not work. As such, they then resort to giving ultimatums to their children and threaten to withhold things in order to get their way.

When they’re being demanding, Companion Structure parents can lose sight of their perspective and, needless to say, their sense of fun. They become rather unreasonable creatures, expecting justifications for behaviour or actions where there simply are none. Sometimes, Companion Structure parents tend to stifle their children and prevent them from being exactly who they want to be.

DISTRACTEDA million things at onceRemember the Companion Structure’s propensity for planning a whole slew of activities for the family? Well, when things go the wrong way, they go really wrong – as the Companion Structure parent can become easily distracted by all the million and one things he or she has planned for the entire family!

Sometimes, this problem is exacerbated by Companion Structure’s tendency to over-schedule his or her own life as well. As such, they are often juggling several different things at once, and is unable to truly focus on the family or their children. They will become very focused on trying to get their matters in order.

Page 55: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

Over-schedules too many •activitiesLoses focus•May be negligent•Stops paying attention•

KEY FACTS

55

Usually, this isn’t such a serious problem unless it becomes unmanageable. Then, the Companion Structure parent is at risk to being blind to his children’s problems and issues, and thereby neglecting some important things. Distraction can also lead to negligence, even if they don’t mean to be that way.

Page 56: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

LACKING STRUCTURE Not knowing A from BThe Companion Structure is generally not-known for having strengths in organisation and planning. They tend to leave the nitty-gritty work of scheduling to others, because more often than not they think that they’re too important to bother with that stuff! However, when they become parents, this tends to become complicated.

It becomes even more complicated when you consider their propensity for family activities in general! Thus, a Companion Structure parent is also prone to being completely confused and scattered, and is capable of throwing her entire family’s plans and purpose into disarray. They tend to lose focus due to their many interests. Typically,

KEY FACTS

Companion Structure people can be said to be the “Jacks of many trades, but master of none” due to this lack of concentration.

At work, Companion Structure people may be lucky enough to have assistants to keep them on track, but not so in the family! As such, their children may continuously feel ill-at-ease due to the lack of structure and purpose in their family’s day-to-day life, and become rebellious or withdrawn as a result. As a parent, the Companion Structure must make an effort to be more organised, or everyone else will suffer.

Chatty•

Don’t worry if you enter a party or networking event without knowing a single soul; you’ll soon be front and centre chatting up a storm with people with whom you want to forge alliances. You enjoy group activities and having a sense of belonging.

Charming and Personable•

You possess charm and the requisite skills to often get people to do your bidding. Make the most of it by cultivating the art of bringing the best out of others. People form a part of your tribe: bring their talents to the fore and they’ll be happy.

Persuasive•

Making others see things from your perspective, or share your enthusiasm and interest, is really not a problem for you. You’ll do well front and centre where you need to probe and persuade!

Adventurous •

You’re often ready to enter into territory where others fear to tread, enabling you to capitalise on risky ventures, mergers, or even investment opportunities that others steer clear of. You like the excitement of venturing into unknown areas, but don’t particularly go for big risks.

Team-centric•

Others usually enjoy working with you – at least, until your true colours are revealed! But if you’re aware of your weaknesses and strive to manage them, you often lead and run profitable and productive teams and groups. Striking out on your own is not your thing. People relationships are more important to you than money.

Page 63: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

63

Dual-sided•

When your chart is strong, your dual-sided nature presents itself as a strength. You present yourself to the world as a little bit of an introvert, and others might expect you to be reticent and retiring. However, you respond to others as an extrovert, and often surprise people by being livelier and more up for action than what they expected. For example, you tend to be louder or more vocal at work, and quieter and more introspective at home.

Optimistic•

You tend to live in the present, and are thus free of baggage or pessimism and cynicism regarding the past or the future. You can be completely engaged with the people and activities you’re involved in at any given time.

Arrogant•

You must curb your tendency to run weaker people down. Just because you’re on top this time, doesn’t mean you always will be! You need to learn to be more humble and not be swayed too much by people who have power or influence. You rarely mix around with people whom you consider weaker to you, or less than bright. You only hang out with people who can contribute some value to you.

Demanding•

You can be very demanding, but often in so subtle a manner that others don’t realise it until they’ve been had! You can be a little bit of manipulator who enjoys twisting your information and being judicious with the real truth and facts in order to get your way.

Scattered•

You lack structure and planning, which, when combined for your propensity for excitement and risks can often spell d-i-s-a-s-t-e-r. Learn how to organise, or hire/work with someone who can help you do so.

Moody and insensitive •

When you laugh, the world must laugh with you. When you cry, the world must... you get the idea. Be less of a moody tyrant. Others will like you better for it! If you sense that others are getting annoyed with you for trying to force them to be as you are or feel as you feel, you must tone down your approach – or risk losing them.

Insincere •

You can be economical with the truth if it suits your purpose. You withhold information, and give only information that is needed, whenever it works to your advantage to do so. Thus, others often get the impression that you’re less than sincere.

Page 67: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

67

Selfish•

If your chart is unhealthy, or demonstrates extreme Companion Structure tendencies, you can get carried away and assume that the world revolves around you. Again, this can make you very unpopular, very quickly. Be more considerate of others. Make it a habit to know what they think and feel, and to see things from their perspective.

Easily offended and resentful•

You tend to harbour grudges, even after an apology has been given. You can also be thin-skinned; while you think others should be able to ‘suck it up and laugh”, you’re rarely that accommodating yourself! This is usually the case if your chart manifests the negative aspects of the Companion Structure.

A NETWORKERSpinning the web of sociability The Companion Structure is the consummate networker. People who fall under the Companion Structure are people who thrive on creating connections with others. Blessed with immutably strong social skills, these people are the type who’ll still be going on a mile-a-minute long after everyone else has already run out of things to say!

It’s just that they see opportunities in people, and have an innate talent for cultivating those opportunities. They tend to mingle well with people from all walks of life, whether from the upper crust or the working class. Companion Structure people know that the best and most valuable things in life come from one’s connection to other people, and that if one helps someone, they’re likely to be helped in return. A successful Companion Structure knows how to make this work for his benefit.

PERSUASIVETaking your dreams... and selling it back to you!Companion Structure people are pros at breaking the ice with people they’ve just met, and are super persuasive. Their charm and engaging energy also makes them appealing to others. They are super-adept at winning people over, owing to their conviction that people are worth persuading and talking to. As such, they tend to shine in sales, marketing, branding, and PR-type job roles.

The ability to persuade lies very much in their enthusiasm in getting others to view things from their perspective. It’s very much a case of, “If I think it’s awesome, I’m going to pretty much ensure that you’ll see it that way, too!” There’s no better compliment to Companion Structure individuals than the knowledge that someone else agrees with them.

KEY FACTS

But more than simple agreement, they enjoy the fact that others are similarly enthusiastic about the same things they are. It’s an easy feat for them to sell others on their ideas and interests because they possess the knack for verbal and social interaction, and this enables them to make others feel special – if at least for a little while! For this reason, they do tend to possess a strong degree of influence among the people they know.

TEAM-PLAYERAlways taking one for the teamPrecisely because they rely on people so much, Companion Structure individuals are not the loner types who prefer to soldier on alone. Anything that needs to get done, they get it done within a group of people – ideally, a group of people all working towards a common cause.

As such, they respect teams and group-work, and other people also tend to work better around them. When things go well, a Companion Structure’s energy and sense of direction is infectious enough to get the whole team working together in ways that prove fruitful and productive.

KEY FACTS

77

Companion Structures are also very inspiring and motivating; hence they’re suited to working in teams. As leaders, they’re able to influence a whole group with their passion for a particular project or idea. At the same time, they will also work hard at selling their own viewpoints to others, and will try to win other people’s point of view if it differs from their own. In a group setting, this enables the Companion Structure to harness the individual energies in order to cultivate a team experience.

RISK-TAKERSEnjoying things fast and furiousCompanion Structure people don’t enjoy working in staid and routine-based environments. They are all about the thrill and the chase of a fast-paced environment, which brings out their natural instincts and zeal for competition. The high-energy situation of fast-moving activities and projects is a natural inspiration for them, and keeps them motivated. They take manageable risks for its excitement factor, and the rush of adrenaline it provides.

This means that they’re more than likely to take risks compared to others, because they tend to view things as a game. Sitting things out on the sidelines is not their style. If others are going from Point A to Point C via the predictable pass through Point B, you can bet that the Companion Structure has thought of a shortcut!

MANIPULATIVEGetting their way with subtle tactics With their ability to delegate, individuals of the Companion Structure variety are rarely busting into a sweat toiling over their own labour. No, more often than not, they’re probably on the phone chatting away with a prospective new business lead while other people are working away. Now this is fine, for the most part, if it’s a mutually-beneficial arrangement in which everyone is doing their part by choice. But most of the time, they engineer the entire scheme, and they stage an entire show in order to make things work for them. They do attempt to twist matters to their advantage.

It becomes trickier when there is some measure of subtle force or prodding being employed. If you’re a Companion Structure person, you’re probably aware that you like to take someone by the arm and guide them to their work... and most likely twisting it when

they’re not doing as per you’re bidding! If someone is not adhering to the plan as seen fit by the Companion Structure person, they are likely to find themselves being artfully manipulated into doing so – even against their wishes.

There is a fine line between motivating others to do something, and manipulating them into doing so. Companion Structures tend to fall into a nasty habit of using others if they’re not careful, seeing people as means to an end rather than as the ends themselves. To this end, the weaker Companion Structures can turn their strengths into a weakness by being a bossy and rather aggressive person who pushes people around against their will – if their charm doesn’t work.

EGOTISTICALMy way... or the highwayThe flipside of a persuasive, social personality is the tendency to self-aggrandizement. Companion Structures are often unable to maintain a strict sense of perception in viewing their achievements against everyone else’s. Because of this, they tend to have grandiose notions about their own capabilities, talents and skills that are sometimes less than accurate.

It’s not unheard of for people who belong to the Companion Structure to constantly attract attention to themselves in dramatic ways. Did you just lose your best client to an interfering upstart? Well, keep your sad story to yourself, because whatever it – the Companion Structure’s story is a thousand times’ worse, and they will make sure that you and everyone else will know it!

RUTHLESSWhen competition means ‘cut throat’Companion Structures are natural-born competitors, but this desire to be the best can quickly take on a ruthless edge when they lose sight and focus of what they’re competing for, and concentrate instead on the rush of the competition itself. Because they’ve always trained themselves to win, they don’t anticipate losing. And when they do, the results can be ugly!

When their competitiveness manifests itself as a negative quality, Companion Structures see everything as a race. That means that they tend to trample everything and everyone in their way in their rush to the finish line. They will not see anything wrong in having to run someone over in order to get ahead, which can make them very nasty bedfellows if things go wrong.

Page 87: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

KEY FACTS

87

Companion Structures also respect strength, and those who show it, and in their weaker moments are perfectly capable of trampling over others whom they consider ‘weak’ or ‘inferior.’ As such, what starts out as a solid alliance between someone of the Companion Structure and another person can slowly disintegrate into an all-out, free-for-all war.

Page 88: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

DISORGANISEDWhen their idea of a system means helter-skelterSometimes, Companion Structures people that are manifesting their traits negatively tend to approach their tasks and projects with a Mad Hatter-air of complete disorganisation. They tend to lack a proper system of filing, documenting, or even problem-solving, and as a result their problems can literally be ALL over the place. They take short-cutes that can create lots of last-minute hassles and problems.

They tend to see themselves as very spontaneous people and project a fly-by-the-seat-of-their-pants type bravado, but more often than not this can manifest itself simply as impulsiveness and extreme rashness. Being reckless is part of their nature – it’s how they go forward and pursue risks – but on the flipside, it provides them with no grounding as to how to go about doing things in a systematic manner. Being a Companion Structure, you need the support, recognition, and encouragement of a whole team of people. You thrive in acting as the go-to-person and leader, and get off on the energy of a collection of people as opposed to the muted energy of one person or two. As such, being part of a collective is the ideal way to get Companion Structures to bring out the best in themselves, and in others. They also thrive in large companies and multinational corporations where there is plenty of avenues for teamwork.

AVOID: Desk-bound, routine •jobs and duties

Getting a job in a corner office, and largely bound to the desk by masses of paperwork, report-writing, and number-crunching is the fastest way to kill the spirit of a Companion Structure person. They’ll become antsy, angry, and agitated, with no social outlet for their energies. These are people-driven people. They need people, and they need to feel that people want and need them.

However, this doesn’t mean that the Companion Structure is someone who needs excitement 24-7. Being smack dab between Yin and Yang, they are likely to walk the middle path of needing both excitement and downtime. They achieve this by getting right into the heart of things through networking and leadership, and putting their feet up by the judicious use of delegation!

The inability to suffer a dent •to their reputation or status, no matter how small, leads to the classic ‘must save face’ mentality. This, combined with a sense of arrogance or entitlement, can lead to dangerous financial ignorance.

BEST PATHS TO WEALTH

Companion Structures, like •everyone else, must capitalise on their strengths in order to make it big. That means, most importantly, working with someone else. A good partnership or enterprise is key; where the Companion Structure individual plays a leadership role, or acts as the ‘face’ of the company, while working with other people who are capable as the behind-the-scenes team.

They can capitalise on their •people skills and delegation abilities, and their superb networking talents, by being managers or even super managers to sports and entertainment figures.

They can also make it big •by becoming moguls of their own corporations – being the ‘face’ and ‘brand’ of it owing to their enthusiasm, energy, people-skills, and their outgoing and competitive nature. Examples of this type of hit-it-big Companion Structure are Rupert Murdoch and Hugh Hefner.

Page 107: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

107

There is also the option of •wheeling and dealing it through your vast network of contacts to strike it big in the property markets and industries. One example of a Companion Structure person who did this is Sheldon Adelson, a billionaire property developer. Or there’s Mark Cuban, who owns an NBA basketball team, and a famous chain of theatres (among others). These Companion Structure types made it big on the strength of their ability to close a deal, network with the right type of bigwigs, and forge important connections that lead to multimillion dollar deals – all talents that are inherent to the Companion Structure individual.

Deal only with •the facts of the situation, not their emotions. If possible, try to navigate around those festering emotions as much as you can!

Always be calm and •poised, and don’t give in to emotions and argue with the Companion Structure person. Why? Because they’re drive to persuade and influence is unlimited, and they can wear you down to the bone if you let them – which is pointless if you’re trying to get work done and problems solved.

If you know people who belong to the Companion Structure and want to know how to best work with them (as colleagues) and manage them (as an employer), read on for some hints:

Page 111: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

111

Clearly lay down •the law, and set p r e d e t e r m i n e d limits. They must not be allowed to use others. If working with them, ensure you send out the message that you’re no pushover waiting to be tied to the saddle.

At the same time, •don’t patronise their emotions or trivialise them. Companion Structures just want to be respected, and to gain recognition and attention from fellow people. Give them that, but on your own terms.

Play down and •minimise their exaggerations, of which there will be quite a few!

Don’t give in to them •too often, even if you’re natural instincts are to avoid conflict and play it cool. Present a backbone, and Companion Structure people will know when to back off and lay off the aggressiveness.

Ask them to repeat •details later on, as they tend to forget (it’s part of the “I don’t need to know this, someone else will handle it” mentality).

Page 113: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

113

If this makes them •sound difficult, they’re not. Give them what they most need – support, and the right conditions for them to exercise their strengths – and they will be absolutely fun and sociable people to work with. They will be confident, not cocky, and be focused on teamwork and c o n n e c t i o n -building.

IDENTIFYING THE EXTREME

COMPANION STRUCTURE PERSON

At the workplace, it will be fairly easy to spot the Companion Structure person with extreme qualities.

Read on to find out how these qualities are manifested:

Deal with it by:Identifying people who seem kin on winning acceptance, but not so keen on doing the work. Give him responsibility in small doses. Don’t entrust him with a major task from the start. He is liable to cause a major loss or serious repercussions. You need to let him know that he needs to gain trust slowly.

He has a •strong need for a c c e p t a n c e and support, and portrays a reasonable amount of support in public. However, he may be a totally different person in private. He accepts responsibility, but doesn’t follow through. At the last-minute or at a critical juncture, he will likely drop the ball.

The Manipulator

Page 117: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

117

Deal with it by:Turning the game on him. Don’t allow his constant judgments and interruptions lead you astray. You must maintain a sense of calmness and balance. Don’t be reactive to his comments. He expects to get a rise out of you; he feeds on being the centre of attention by drawing attention to what he thinks are your negative points.

He may be the •type who will do whatever it takes to bring you down. He can do this by undercutting your every move, e.g. by saying, “It won’t work, this is a bad idea.” He will subtly manipulate others for personal gain but never take personal responsibility, hence being very cynical, critical, judgmental and negative.

Deal with it by:Refusing to be drawn in. If this is a recurring problem, then you need to nip it in the bud by identifying an excuse for what it is, and then calling him on it. Don’t do this in front of others; embarrassing him is not the way. Talk to him in private, and tell him calmly the consequences that will befall him should he continue with his behaviour.

He makes excuses •for his inability to fulfill his duties and tasks. He also avoids responsibility by forcing people to accept him for who he is, by saying things like, “It’s just the way I am.” He will lead you around in a circle and try to wear you down with excuses.

Page 119: BaZi Essentials -5 Structures Connector

119

Deal with it by:Initially, killing him with kindness. The less intimidated or cowed you are by him, the less confident he becomes of his manipulative methods. Simply carry on as though nothing is wrong, and avoid paying him the extra attention. When his behaviour is very intrusive or upsetting for others, it then becomes very important to stage an intervention with him.

He likes to instigate •and cause tension, and often fans the flames of discontent or discord. He uses his moodiness as a shield to prevent others from approaching him whenever they feel like it, thereby keeping at bay. He makes others feel uncertain and tense around him, and in very extreme cases can become explosive, cutting, loud, and insensitive.
