We have had numerous graduating students receive scholarships for their outstanding academic performances and we look forward to our annual Academic Awards night next fall when we celebrate the outstanding achievements of our junior students. In addition, our school continues to perform excep- tionally well on the OSSLT and the grade nine EQAO math assessment. Our French Immersion programme continues to produce fully bilingual gradu- ates, our Advanced Placement programme continues to grow and we also maintain our Manufacturing Specialist High Skills Major Programme. Congratulations to Ms. Richmond and her theatre arts class for their per- formance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Audiences enjoyed the fantastic performances over the three evening run. The dedication and profession- alism of the students created a first class theatre experience filled with excitement and humour. The artistic talents at Bayside were on full display. Regarding athletics, we had over 250 students and over twenty staff par- ticipate in our interschool athletics programme and several students com- pete at OFSAA, the highest possible level of high school athletic competi- tion. Special mention goes to the senior girls’ rugby team for winning gold at OFSAA this Spring. Student leadership has always been a focal point of Bayside; not only did our Students’ Council raise money for multiple good causes, they also or- ganized over a dozen special events and activities throughout the year for our school community. Our Athletic Council organized and ran three major spirit days, intramurals and a very successful athletic banquet. We also had several other student leadership groups such as Beyond the Hurt, (anti bullying) Global Awareness, Model United Nations, Red Devil Mentoring, GSA and the Photography Club. Additionally, a group of senior students organized Bayside’s first ever Colour Run and raised over $12,000 for a lo- cal charity. Personally, it was one of my highlights this year. If you read the research on high performing, effective schools, you will always find student ownership and student leadership at the top of the list of essential charac- teristics. There is no doubt that Bayside has these covered. As I complete my fourth year as principal, I am very happy and looking forward to year five. I truly enjoy working with the Bayside community; our students are fantastic, the staff is exceptional and the parents are incred- ibly supportive. I consider myself very fortunate to be the principal of such a great school. Book Club Food For Learning

Bayside’s book club members enjoyed a full year of reading! Members read a series of student choice titles, as well as the Forest of Reading’s White Pine titles. We were pleased to see author E.K. Johnston’s book Exit, Pursued by A Bear cho-sen as an honour book by White Pine members across the country. This year we say goodbye to a group of book club members who are graduat-ing. We wish the following members best of luck as they pursue new adventures: Megan Brearley, Leah Danaher, Jaimelee Earl, Madyson Kiepprien-Fraser, Laurence Roy, Colleen Salvati, Olive Scott, Keegan Shalla, Michael Terp-stra, and Meghan Watts. Keep reading!

Students who have enjoyed reading Forest of Reading ti-tles over the years are invited to participate in “I Read Cana-dian Book Challenge” that is being sponsored by the Ontario Library Associa-tion. What do you have to do? Between now and December 31st, read 150 of the Forest of Reading titles. What can you win? A set of White Pine 2018 books for you and one for Bayside’s library. Fur-ther details: The books can be from any ‘branch,’ from picture books on up to White Pine titles and if you read something back when you were 12, that’s fine, it still counts. Check out their website: http://q-r.to/balzVg and click on Forest of Reading to go to the contest page. You’ll also find archive lists for all the programmes. You may discover you have already read close to 150!

Bayside at AGO & Graffiti Alley

Bayside’s Food for Learning programme was a popular destination again this year, ensuring that no student was hungry while at school. Students visited the Learning Commons before school and at break to access breakfast items such as bagels, cereal, fruit and yogurt. During the lunch hours stu-dents without a lunch were able to pick up a sand-wich, yogurt and an apple. Apples were available at the counter all day for between meal energy. Our Food for Learning programmes could not ex-ist without financial support. The Hastings Prince Edward Food for Learning organization receives funding from the Ministry of Child and Youth Ser-vices to support programmes. In addition, local fund raising efforts such as Feed the Meter and the annual Student Benefit Auction provide additional funding which is shared among all schools who of-fer Food for Learning programmes. We also benefitted from student fundrais-ing. Bayside’s Student Council sold Reid’s sundaes and $500 was do-nated to our school’s nutrition programmes. It takes a lot of funds to provide students with healthy, nutritious food. Bay-side students consume about 70 apples a day and apples don’t qualify as a snack pro-gramme because two food groups need to be served. If you are interested in making a donation to our apple fund, please contact Mrs. Mor- row at 613-966-2922, ext. 2126.

May 11th found 40 of Bayside's best in Toronto checking out the Georgia O'Keefe Show at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Other itinerary stops included Toronto's Graffiti Alley, Kensington Market, and a quick jaunt to the Eaton's Centre. Mr. Campbell, Ms. Sevigny, and Bayside art students, returned tired but happy later that evening. As always, our students were polite, cooperative and a pleasure to take on the trip.

Bayside Theatre

Great Place Award

This year’s theatre production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a HUGE success. Since February, 20 students were very busy preparing for opening night June 1st. Hundreds of hours of rehearsals, costum-ing, set painting, lighting, and promotion came together in an amazing opening night and run of the show. What was not seen were the countless volunteers helping backstage, with hair/makeup, concession and ticket sales. The cast would like to extend many thanks to all those who helped with this year’s produc-tion. It was truly a Bayside involved show. Next year, we look forward to the exciting Musical Theatre pro-gramme. Stay tuned for updates and tickets!

Each year the Hastings Prince Edward District school board recognizes outstanding individu-als with a Great Place award. A maximum of ten people are honoured each year. This year Bayside’s Mrs. Deb Stott received a Great Place award for her work as an Educational Assistant in our Resource Room. Mrs. Stott makes a personal investment in students to help ensure their success at school. But she does much more than that. She knows what’s going on in their lives outside school and takes that into account when providing support in the classroom. Mrs. Stott also assists with after school literacy, helping build the confidence level of students who are stressed about the test. Her door is always open by 7:30 and she can often be found in the halls before school and at lunch, seek-ing out students who need that extra reminder, smile, or ‘you can do it’ message. A special thank

you goes out to students Kirstin Derrett and Brooke Groh who organized the nomination. We would also like to recognize Mrs. Allison Culkin, an Eng-lish teacher at Bayside who was nominated for a Great Place award in recognition of her coaching and leadership for events such as Pink Shirt Day and TogetherFest.

Co-op News

We would like to thank each of our Co-op place-ments for their commitment to Bayside. We are al-ways impressed with the outstanding support we re-ceive from our community of employers. They play a key role in developing the talents and abilities of our students in the workplace. In return, Bayside stu-dents work hard to meet expectations and to dem-onstrate their growing skills and knowledge. Many also attend college one day a week in dual credit programmes to experience the college environment and train in areas related to their co-op experience.

Each semester, Co-op students showcase what they have learned to the whole school by creating dis-plays and presentations for our Career Fair. This se-mester we had some outstanding displays.

Photography Club

Bayside’s Photography Club continues to flourish. With the impending summer vacation, we had a whole session on travel photography and discussed some great mobile apps. Recently we experiment-ed with photographing liquids in motion (see below and thanks Lauren!) Bring your questions and awe-some photos on Tuesdays after school starting in late September! See Mr. Reid for details.

TogetherFest

Thanks to all our swimmers and coaches on a fantas-tic swim season. There were many folks who helped to ensure our season ran smoothly - Coaches Mrs. Francis, Cat Mason, Jodi Hynes and Mr. Collins, Swim Convenor Mrs. Webb who kept us organized. Thanks to all of our dedicated lifeguards for dedicating their time to help out in the early winter morning practices! We continued our success this year, capturing the Bay of Quinte Championship for a record sixth time, as well as winning back the COSSA Championship after a one year hiatus! We sent 27 competitors to OFSAA this year to represent our school, with two finishing in

the top five in Ontario (Maggie & Will). We are hop-ing to continue this amazing success next year! We are always looking for fresh recruits. Whether you will be in Grade 9 or Grade 12 next year, whether you are an experienced swimmer or a newbie, con-sider coming out next November for our team! We offer an annual overnight trip to start the year and the fitness gains and friendships you will make are second to none! The swim team is open to all abilities where you can work towards your own individual goals while still being part of an awesome team. Talk to any of the coaches or current swimmers if you are interested and look to sign up sometime in October!

Congratulations to the Bayside Tennis Team for a hard-fought tie for first place overall at the Bay of Quinte Annual Tennis Tournament. On Friday May 26, students and staff celebrated To-getherFest, a unique event put together by students in order to raise funds for All-Together Housing, a local organization which helps provide affordable housing to people struggling in the community. The main event was a colour run where close to 200 students participated in a five-kilometre run through the school property. Stations were set up throughout the course with teachers and community members tossing coloured powder on the runners to symbolize inclusivity. In total, over $12,000 was raised which will go to-wards All-Together Housing’s current project, the de-velopment of LGBTQ-focused transitional housing.Congratulations to all of the participants, top fundrais-er Jackson Pike, and student chairpeople Josh Terp-stra, Isabella Marchiori and Jacqui Lichty, along with the committee on running such a successful event!

Bayside Soccer 2016-2017

It was another amazing year for our Bayside Foot-ball Club! There is some incredible talent walk-ing through our halls and there were many new players to the sport who improved their skills over the course of the year as well! We saw many high-lights from league play, playoffs, and tournament play - but one that stands out was the Boys and Girls An-nual Match which this year was held at Mary Ann Sills and, despite the rain, our players had a blast!

SR. BOYSThe old boys had one of their best

performances in recent memory. They began the season drawing 1-1 against last

year’s undefeated OFSAA Champs NCC, and did not look back, meeting St Paul’s in the BoQ Final. It took extra time, and two rounds of penalty kicks to decide the winner, and unfortunately for BSS, silver was the hardware of the day. History would repeat itself at COSSA in the gold medal final, falling 3-2 to Crestwood and taking home the silver medal. This has lit a fire for next season with the main nucleus of players returning and a goal of qualifying for OF-SAA has been set.

JR. GIRLSThe junior girls continued their excellent form, going undefeated in regular season play and in the playoffs, defeating MSS in the Bay of Quinte Final to take Gold. At COSSA, they easily won their semi-final, but came up short in the Gold Medal game against a very tal-ented Cobourg St. Mary’s team.

SR. GIRLSThe senior ladies were once again the top dogs in the league, defeating St. Theresa in the gold medal game to capture the Bay of Quinte Championship. They tacked on a silver medal as well at COSSA! Great sea-son ladies! Thanks to all our graduating players and best of luck in the future!

JR. BOYSThe young guns proved to be a dominating force in the fall, going undefeated in league play, and then despite a tough 2-1 loss in the Bay of Quinte semis, bounced back to win COSSA Gold over St. Mary’s Co-bourg. This team is loaded with talent and speed and will be a major contender once again next sea-son!

Soccer will KICK OFF the second day back in September for the boys and after March Break in 2018 for the girls. If you are interested in playing, please talk to

any of our coaches: Mrs. Tsarouhas, Mr. Clair, Mr. Collins or Mr. John Jenkins!

Girls’ Rugby

The Sr She-Devils travelled to the Durham area to particiapte in the 2017 OFSAA A/AA Rugby Cham-pionship from May 29-31 as the second seed. The girls started their tourney with a rainy drive to Port Perry where the skies cleared just in time for kick-off against #15 seeded GL Roberts from Oshawa. The girls escaped their “bus legs” and got rolling to a comfortable 34-5 win. Later on that evening the girls got all cleaned up and attended the champi-onship banquet with approximately 1000 of their new friends and celebrated sport and all that is good about it. On Tuesday morning the girls arrived at the Ajax Wanderers Rugby Club for their quarter final showdown with Bishop MacDonnell CSS from Guelph. The early morning kick off did not play into the girls’ favour as they went into halftime tied at 10. Everything came together in the second half as the girls steamrolled to a 37-10 victory and a berth in the semi-finals where they would face the third seed St Anne’s from Clinton. The girls came out fir-

ing on all cylinders after more than two hours of rain and lightning delays to run away with a 27-0 victory. One more sleep until the seventh game in a best of seven season series with our local rivals from Tren-ton High. The girls’ level of focus and commitment left no doubt about the outcome as they scored the only points of the game in the first eight minutes and played suffocating defence for the rest of the game, including after another half hour lightning delay with less than eight minutes to go in the game. This made our girls the only team to both shut-out and score on Trenton in the entire tournament and end the Tigers’ three year run as champions. As coaches we could not be more proud of this group of athletes. We will greatly miss our graduates and all they have meant to the programme, but are look-ing forward with great optimism to working with our group of returnees. Here’s hoping for a trip to Wind-sor next year and a chance to defend our title!!

Sports of Sorts and Athletic Banquet

This year’s track and field team saw a lot of success, as many athletes accomplished a plethora of per-sonal bests. Bayside was able to send 19 athletes to the East Regionals in Ottawa. From there, one in-dividual, Liam Walsh, qualified in both the 1500m, and 3000m races with phenomenal results. The midget girls relay team (Anastassja Larouche, Ju-liana Edgett, Teagan Caulfield and Kayley Lindsay) also scored a spot to compete at OFSAA that was hosted here in Belleville. Bayside’s OFSAA highlight was Liam Walsh finishing in the top eighth spot on our home track! Individual athletes that were recog-nized at the year end athletic banquet for their hard work and performances for the track season were: Tyler Gordon, Anastassja Larouche, Dallin Whitford, Jack Ireland, and Liam Walsh! Congrats to all, and thanks for an amazing season. Anyone looking to prepare for our upcoming cross-country season throughout the summer months, and

would like to follow the workout programme can meet the team on Thursday evenings at 7 pm. The first one will be at the Pirate Ship Park in Belleville on July 6th. The locations will change weekly, so if you are interested in joining or just want access to the workout programme, contact Ms. Bateman for more information!

On Thursday June 8th, our Bayside athletic family celebrated our year of sports. Twelve teams com-peted in our annual sports of sorts tournament, and dinner/awards followed. Each team was able to recognize various athletes for their commitments, coachability, improvements, as well as perfor-mance and leadership. The major award winners were as follows: Grade 9 athletes of the year: Han-nah Lockwood, Liam Walsh, and Garrison Moore. Grade 10 athletes of the year: Madeline Hill-Dolan, and Liam Reid. Grade 11 athlete of the year: Alex-andra Roberto, and Wyatt Craig. Grade 12 athlete sof the year: Galini Manginas, and Cameron Hager-man. Our graduating athlete with the most contri-bution to BSS athletics was Taylor McCullough. Ray and Joanne Card as well as Jeff Walsh were recog-

nized for their parent contributions. Lindsay Reid, Rosemary Minns, Jordan Blackburn and Seb Reddom were all recognized for their contributions to Bayside and the athlet-ics programme. Many thanks to all the un-sung heroes: athletes, parents, volunteers, coaching staff for all their hard work and dedication throughout the year! None of this works without ALL OF YOU!
