Proudly Co-Educational We believe that through Bayfield High School’s coeducational environment, we provide the best of learning opportunities for all students.

This belief in coeducation is supported by international research, that the education of boys and girls together is the most healthy, natural and normal setting for learning. This same research also shows that in a coeducational setting the equality of opportunities for both sexes is recognised.

We also believe that in our coeducational setting we are able to provide the broadest range of activities and experiences, and able to meet the developmental needs of the widest possible group of students.

This research has also shown that girls do better in all aspects of learning as well as developing a stronger self confidence in a coeducational setting, while boys do much better academically and socially. These studies also report that both sexes had greater enjoyment and higher self esteem in schools like Bayfield High School.

The feedback we receive from employers and tertiary institutions is that our students come to them with excellent work habits and mature social skills.

The achievement of our students is testimony to how well co-educated learning suits them. This is shown in our NCEA grades, our scholarship passes and the high level of success of our students in the work place and tertiary education.

A Safe and Secure EnvironmentA t Bayfield High School we are committed to making sure our students feel safe and secure. Students are encouraged to be individuals in an open and friendly environment in which they are well known by the staff and understood. We take pride in how safe our school is. Our Charter of Student Rights is testimony to the importance that we place in taking care of our students.

Our staff are always ready to help and we have many support systems. Each student is part of a House. Within that House they are part of a Tutor Group, looked after by a Tutor Teacher. A Dean also looks after each House. In addition, there is a Guidance Counsellor who is readily available to deal with any concerns students or parents may have. Senior staff are also available to assist and all staff may be contacted by email or by telephone.

Students are encouraged to help and support each other. There are a variety of peer support and student support groups throughout the school, aimed at making all students feel welcome. Our senior students work with and support our junior students.

From the moment a student enters our school to when they leave we are focused on supporting and assisting them to cope with the demands of their life in our school and the world beyond school. We are sensitive to their personal concerns and needs in terms of study skills, homework, career choice and subject selection. Staff will go out of their way to help students. We pride ourselves on the positive relationships between staff and students.

Learning Excellence A t Bayfield High School we are dedicated to learning excellence. We are one of Dunedin’s top performing schools for academic achievement. This is shown by the level of our NCEA achievement and the number of scholarship results. Teaching at Bayfield High School is of the highest standard.

We focus on teaching learning skills which enables students to develop powerful learning strategies. Year 9 and 10 students practise and master the learning skills necessary for Years 11-13.

Students also learn how to set learning goals and we teach students to take charge of their own learning. In this way we ensure our students are ready for the demands of NCEA in Years 11-13 and are independent learners and thinkers for life.

In Years 11-13 the focus is also on personal excellence. Students are offered a choice from a very wide range of NCEA courses. Some courses offered are unique to the school and are truly modern. These courses include Computer Design and Webpage design. We also provide work experience through our GATEWAY and STAR programmes.

To support excellence, we have a Gifted and Talented Programme designed to help junior students with exceptional abilities to extend their individual talents. Seniors are offered further extension.

We also have a reputation for providing the best for students with learning difficulties.

Because of our demand for excellence, all students are expected to achieve at their highest level. We also ask that parents and caregivers are actively involved in the child’s learning and encourage this through regular parent interviews and monitoring of student diaries.

We also recognise that society expects our young people to be life-long learners. As a consequence, the school provides interactive learning through its computers and intranet.
