June 2: Seniors have their 7th period exam. Immediately following the exam

at 10:25 a.m., all Seniors must go through Senior Clearance. At this time, we

will check to make sure they have turned in all required graduation

paperwork and have cleared all school debts.

June 3: Seniors have the day off!

June 6: Graduation Practice will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at

Jiffy Lube Live. Practice is required of all Seniors who plan to participate in

the graduation ceremony.

June 7: Graduation Day! Seniors must report to Jiffy Lube Live no later

than 5:00 p.m. The ceremony starts at 6:00 p.m.

Special Message from SCA President, Steven Tian.

Battlefield is a truly special place, and while bullying may not be a problem at Battlefield, that does not mean

there is no room for improvement. At the invitation of Mrs. Ethridge-Conti, the SCA Executive Board is leading

a dedicated group of student leaders in coming up with innovative ways to bring the Bobcat Family closer

together through programs designed to lift students up and promote kindness both in and out of school. With the

full support of administration and the student body, we have started putting our plans in motion, including

- Bobcat Reflection Garden, under the direction of senior Tommy De Angelus

- Big Brothers and Sisters Mentorship Program for new students and freshmen, under the direction of

junior Phil Choi

- Anti-Bullying Video Campaign, under the direction of senior Gigi Schloss

- Spirit Banners Publicity Campaign, under the direction of marketing teacher Mrs. Smith

- Give-A-Hug Initiative, under the direction of Ajah Haskell and EDGE Club

- Increased emphasis by the Counseling Department on their mission to support students both

academically and personally

This is only the first of a series of initiatives designed to foster an even more inclusive and positive school

environment. Please join us in the mission to create a nurturing environment where each student is empowered

to promote kindness and lift up our fellow Bobcats so that all of us can be at our best day in and day out.

Course Selection for 2016-2017

The counselors have finished individual course selection meetings with students for the 2016-2017 school year.

Students are reminded to return the yellow copy of their course selection form with parent/guardian signature to

the Counseling Center as soon as possible. Course selection verification letters will be sent home to students

and parents/guardians in May so that you may finalize course requests or make adjustments as needed. While

the deadline to submit course request changes for the 2016-2017 school year is Monday, June 6, 2016, students

and parents/guardians are reminded that decisions regarding the closing or cancelation of classes for next year

may be made prior to that date based on student interest, budget, and staffing.

Senior Survey

Each year we are required to gather survey data from every member of the senior class regarding post-

secondary plans, college acceptance, and scholarship awards. All seniors must complete the senior survey on

Family Connection in by Friday, May 6th. Seniors should log into Family Connection, click on the “About

Me” tab, and click on the “PWCS Senior Survey 2016” link at the top left side of the page. The survey must be

completed in one sitting; seniors will not be able to re-open the survey to edit their responses after they click

“Submit Answers”. Completing the survey is a senior obligation; seniors who have not completed a senior

survey will not be able to complete senior clearance. Any senior who is having difficulty logging into Family

Connection or completing the survey should go to the Counseling Center for assistance.

Senior Awards Night

Seniors who wish to be recognized at Senior Awards Night on Monday, May 23rd must list scholarships and

amount of scholarship awarded when they complete their senior survey, and also bring official documentation

of their scholarship award(s) to Mrs. Smith in the Counseling Center by Friday, May 6th. Seniors who do not

provide official documentation to Mrs. Smith will not be recognized at Senior Awards Night. Contact Mrs.

Vanessa Smith if you have any questions.

AP Exam Information

AP Exams will be administered Monday, May 2nd through Friday, May 13th. Dates and times are preset by The

College Board and must be adhered to. Below is important information of which parents/guardians should be

aware:

In early April, AP pre-administration will occur. Pre-administration is a way to save time on exam days.

During this time, students will complete identifying information on the answer sheets. It is strongly

encouraged that when students are entering information on the answer sheets that they use the same

information as in previous years and with other College Board assessments. For example, students

should use the same email address on any AP exam answer sheets that they used on their PSAT answer

sheet and/or their College Board account. This helps with continuity of score reporting.

The 2015-2016 Bulletin for AP Students & Parents was distributed to students in January. It is important

that families review the bulletin closely for AP rules and expectations. The bulletin can be found online

AP exams conducted in the morning: Students should report directly to their exam location by 7:30 a.m.

(including on Wednesdays before Read to Succeed). During the week before exams, students will be

informed by their AP teacher where to report for exams.

Bring several #2 pencils and traditional blue or black ink pens. We will not have any available for

students to borrow.

BE ON TIME! Students cannot be admitted after exams begin. If a student is absent because he/she is

ill, the student must submit a doctor’s note to Mrs. Pomfret in the Counseling Center within 24 hours of

the missed exam.

No electronic equipment (cell phone, smartphone, laptop, etc.) portable or listening devices (MP3

player, iPod, etc.), cameras or other photographic equipment devices that can access the internet, or any

other electronic/communication devices are allowed in the exam room or during a break. Use of any of

this equipment can cause the student’s score or scores of the entire group to be cancelled and the

school can be prohibited from serving as an AP exam site in the future.

No watches that beep are allowed.

No eating or drinking is allowed.

If students are taking an exam that allows calculator use, fresh batteries are recommended. If students

are allowed a calculator, ruler and/or straightedge they should have those items with them when they

report to the exam. We will not have any available for students to borrow.

It is strongly encouraged that students bring their lunch when they have their AP exam(s), especially if

they have both morning and afternoon exams.

Students taking the following exams should arrange for rides home since these exams will end past the

regular school day:

Governor’s Early College Scholars Program

The Governor’s Early College Scholars Program is intended to encourage eligible high school students to

complete requirements for a high school diploma and concurrently earn at least 15 hours of transferable credits

toward a college degree. This program can potentially result in a more productive senior year and reduce the

amount of college tuition for families. Students earning a college degree in seven semesters instead of eight can

save an average of $5,000 in college expenses.

The Governor’s Early College Scholars Program agreement may be signed at any time, from ninth to twelfth

grade. Participants agree to: (1) earn an Advanced Studies diploma with a Governor’s Seal and (2) earn at least

15 transferable college credits while enrolled in high school. Interested students can download the Early

College Scholars Agreement at the “Documents & Downloads” menu of the Counseling Center webpage or

pick one up in the Counseling Center. Completed forms should be returned to the Counseling Center.

Reminder

The Counseling Center staff provides academic, personal/social, and career counseling to all students and offer

support and assistance to parents/guardians and staff. Please check our website and future newsletters for

information regarding classroom core curriculum activities and counseling services. Please contact your

student’s counselor if you have any questions or concerns.

Battlefield Summer Academic Camps

Battlefield HS is pleased to announce that it will be hosting academic camps for students of all ages this

Teacher Recognition

Congratulations to Ms. Gail Drake for her selection as the Virginia State Air Force Association Teacher of the

Year. She was recognized for her exceptional work with over 80 students in the Cyber Patriot competition.

The Battlefield AJFROTC team placed first in the state in the All Services Division, while the ILITE Cyber 3

team placed 2nd among all schools in Virginia.

May Testing

The May calendar is filled with many AP and SOL tests. Please see your teacher, or visit the following links

Testing: Electronic Device Policy

Any use of an electronic device, at any point during a SOL test session, will be considered cheating. This

includes anytime during the class period, whether or not all students have finished their SOL exam.

During testing, students should only have access to those authorized materials for the test they are taking.

Students may not have access to unauthorized materials during testing. Such materials include, but are not

limited to: formula cards, class notes, course content review materials, test taking strategy reminders, notes,

text books, and other curriculum materials, “cheat sheets,” unauthorized calculators, unauthorized formula

sheets, extra highlighters, non-school issued scratch paper, etc. The use of any unauthorized materials is

considered cheating.

In accordance with the PWCS Code of Behavior, any student deemed to have cheated will receive a score of

“0” on the test. In addition to receiving a zero on the SOL, students will not be allowed to retake their SOL

during the current school year, and the student’s administrator will assign additional disciplinary actions.

Eat Your Colors!

Eat school lunch and taste the rainbow! No, we’re not talking about Skittles here… we mean fruits and

vegetables! A colorful plate tastes even better than it looks, and your school cafeteria offers a variety of colorful

fruits and vegetables every day. But do you know why everyone tells you to “eat your colors”?

Phytonutrients are found in plants. They offer many different health benefits, while also providing fruits and

vegetables with distinct flavors and COLORS! So which colors offer which phytonutrients, and what do they

do for your body?

RED fruits and vegetables have lycopene and anthocyanins which help your organs and circulatory system stay

healthy. ORANGE fruits and vegetables are rich in beta carotene, a precursor to Vitamin A, and antioxidants.

They help support your immune system and protect your body against cell damage. GREEN fruits and

vegetables get their color from chlorophyll, which helps your body eliminate toxins. PURPLE fruits and

vegetables contain tons of antioxidants that raise your good cholesterol and support brain health.

The list doesn’t stop there, which means you need to eat many different colors of fruits and vegetables to get all

On March 11, 2016, six students from Mr. Bishop’s Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Introduction to

Engineering course participated in the Northern Virginia’s Regional SeaPerch Challenge held at the Manassas

Park Community Center. Ninety-four teams competed for the opportunity to travel to Louisiana State

University for the National Competition in May. The following students from the Ghost Divers team (pictured

below) earned 1st place with their “Engineering Notebook” and 2nd place in the “Innovative Design” categories.

Also competing were Brandon Bolino, Zachary Saulsbury, and Carter Theros. Although the teams from

Battlefield did not place high enough to qualify for the trip to LSU this year, both teams have high hopes and

expectations for next year’s competitions!

National Latin Exam

The National Latin Exam is an annual academic competition for students enrolled in Latin language courses.

This year, over 154,000 students from all 50 states and 19 foreign countries participated. The exam covers

topics ranging from translation, grammar identification, vocabulary recognition, history, culture, mythology,

recognizing Latin root words in English derivatives, and translating common phrases and mottos. Only the top

achievers are given awards for exceptional performance. The award categories from highest to lowest are:

Swim

Congratulations to Emily Hetzer and Katie Tillotson who both received Washington Post "All Met" Honorable Mentions honors.

In addition, three Battlefield senior swimmers were selected for the NISCA/ Speedo Academic All- American team for their exemplary work in the pool and in the classroom. This year’s selections were:

Track

The Battlefield High School track and field team is off to a very strong start in the 2015-2016 spring season.

After braving through the first meet of the season in snow, the team next held the annual

Battlefield Relays on April 2nd. The team competed excellently, winning the meet on both

the boys and girls side of competition. At the next meet, the Northern Virginia Invitational,

the team was again confronted by snow and adverse weather, and ended up competing only

on day one of the meet. Most recently, this weekend on April 16th at the Bullis Invitational

in Potomac, Maryland, competing against more than 40 teams from at least five states along

the eastern coast, the girls track and field team emerged victorious, and the boys team finished fifth. Several

school records, regional and state qualifiers have already been accomplished, with hopefully many more to

come. Of particular significance, Junior Emily Harrison has tied her school record of 11 feet 6 inches in the

girls pole vault while also achieving the state standard, and fellow Junior Lauren Hoffman broke her own week-

old record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.80, and several year old record in the 300 hurdles with a time of

44.41, attaining state standards in both events as well. The team is looking forward to continued strong efforts,

and further development of the new and young members of the team.

For those parents who drive your children to school, we need your help! Each morning over 1,000 cars enter

the parking lot at Battlefield in a 30 minute window (6:50 a.m. to 7:20 a.m.). With this number of cars and the

number of buses that enter and leave each morning, the traffic often backs up. Lately, a number of parents have

been allowing their children to get out of cars on Graduation Drive or at the entrance to the parking lot. This is

highly dangerous as students are darting between moving cars during a time of day where the light is limited.

Please help us to ensure the safety of all students, including those who are in their first months/years of driving.

If you are going to drive your child to school, it is imperative you drop your student off at the front of the

school. If students are ready to exit the cars quickly, the traffic in front of the building will move faster. If your

child needs time to remove items like large projects, please pull into the front parking lot to allow traffic to

continue to move efficiently.

Battlefield HS to Host Annual Spring Carnival

Battlefield High School will host its annual Spring Carnival in the Battlefield Football Stadium on Saturday

May 14th, from 1 until 5 PM. This year’s Spring Carnival will feature attractions for everyone, from elementary

school students to high school students…nobody leaves hungry or unhappy! And best of all, admission to the

carnival is FREE for everyone!

Attractions include: Moon Bounce, Acro-Bungee (a trampoline on steroids!), Wipeout Challenge, Dunk Tank,

Face Painting, Freestyle Dance Contest, Live Music Performances, Carnival Games (Cornhole, Dart Toss), and

of course, the main event….the annual Battlefield Powderpuff Football Class vs. Class Tournament. Come see

the Seniors take on the Freshmen at 1 PM, the Juniors take on the Sophomores at 2:45, with the championship

game at 4:15! Which class will take home the trophy this year?

Make sure to come to the carnival hungry, and enjoy a smorgasbord of delicious food with your family. Dining

options include Chick-Fil-A, Popcorn, Sno-Cones, Cotton Candy, and Baked Goods, Hamburgers, Hotdogs, and

Nachos.

Don’t miss this annual community event! Bring your family to the Battlefield High School Spring Carnival and

everyone will have a great time – it’s the place to be!

Organizations participating in this year’s Spring Carnival include the SCA, Journalism, Key Club, Humane

Society, FBLA, International Club, Peer Diversity, and Athletic Boosters.

Music

On March 14 & 15, the Battlefield Choirs participated in District IX choral Assessment held at Freedom High

School (Woodbridge). All choirs received superior ratings in both performance and sight-reading. The students

are currently preparing for the big Spring Show held on Friday June 3. The theme this year is Broadway! Make

sure to look for updates concerning upcoming rehearsal times! The Battlefield Choral Boosters invite you to

stay up-to-date with choir events and activities by visiting their new website: www.BattlefieldChoirs.org. In

addition to information about the school’s music program, the website will showcase recent and archived

performances, provide parents with access to supporting the choirs, and serve as a repository for updates on the

choirs’ upcoming trips. Interested in getting involved? Booster club meetings take place on the 3rd Tuesday of

each month in the choir room, starting at 7:00pm. The Choral Boosters invite all Battlefield families to join the

fun!

As our year comes to a close, students are celebrating their success at district assessment and the National Heritage

Competition in Orlando, Florida.

On March 9th, 10th, and 11th our students hosted the district 9 assessment event. Over 60

orchestras from schools across Prince William County, Manassas, and Manassas Park came

to perform for a panel of judges here at Battlefield High School. Our students performed

phenomenally, with each of our three groups earning perfect superior rankings from every

single judge. As the only high school earning straight superior rankings, our students’ hard

work paid off. Thank you to the parents who volunteered food, the students who volunteered

countless hours of their time, and all of the members of the Battlefield community who

helped make this event a success.

Students traveled to Orlando from March 31st – April 3rd to compete in the

Heritage National Competition and visit Universal Studios. Both of our

groups earned “Gold”, the highest score available to performing ensembles.

Students enjoyed the warm weather and activities at Universal Studios,

including Harry Potter World, the Islands of Adventure, and all the theme

park had to offer. Congratulations to all of our students for all of their hard

work preparing to compete in Florida!

Four students earned positions in the All-Virginia Orchestra this year. This ensemble

comprises the very best from across the state and selection is extremely competitive.

A should out to Eugene Choo, selected as a first violin, and Adrienne Hyde, Daniel

Park, and Andrew Schlagel, all selected as members of the cello section. Adrienne

Hyde earned top honors and was awarded the position of Principal Cello in the All-

Virginia Orchestra.

June 1st is our annual “themed concert”, featuring video game music. Come enjoy the show – free admission and

the concert begins at 7:00PM! Our annual awards banquet is Friday, June 10th. You can find a complete listing of

Science National Honor Society Family Night

On February 19, Science National Honor Society hosted Family Science Night. Approximately thirty families

partook in science experiments led by Battlefield High School Students. Some of the highlights were extracting

strawberry DNA referred to for the night as strawberry snot, exploring the science of fire, making elephant

tooth paste, holding boo bubbles, playing with magic sand, looking at the gas that plants and animals make, and

doing marker chromatography.

USA’s Biology Olympiad Competition

On February 10, fourteen students enrolled in AP Biology participated in the United States of America Biology

Olympiad competition. Biology Olympiad is a premiere biology competition for high school students. Its goal

is to enrich life science education. It provides the motivation and skills training to take them beyond their

classroom experience to the level of international competitiveness. If students are in the top 20% of the more

than 10,000 students who took the test nationwide, they will be invited to participate in the semi-final

examination. If they are a national finalist, they will be invited to participate in the International Biology

Olympiad competition this summer in Hanoi Vietnam. All high school students are eligible to participate in

Biology Olympiad. Enrollment in the biology class is not a pre-requisite.

Marine Biology/Animal Science Students Skype with Professionals in the Field:

Students interested in Marine Biology/Animal Science field have gotten two unique opportunities to Skype with

professionals in the field. The group of about 20 students had the chance to Skype with Chris Fischer of

“Ocearch,” leader of the “Ocearch,” organization.

Mr. Fischer has been featured on shark week and is a leading shark scientist. “Ocearch” scientists were the first

to tag and release four great white sharks in the Atlantic Ocean. The data that they have gathered from these

sharks is the first of its kind.

From the “SeaWorld” scientists, students learned about the trained medical behaviors important to the health

and well-being of the whales. They were then able to have a nice Q&A session with a senior trainer of 23 years,

who was able to answer all of their questions.

The Future Business Leaders of America held its State Leadership Conference on Saturday, April 9th, at the

Reston Towne Center. Battlefield had several student to attend this

event with five of the students competing and three of our students

placed in their category.

The Battlefield High School PTO is finishing up a productive year.

Tech Fund

With membership support from more than 150 members, we were able to donate materials and

document cameras to the school. There are several ways to support the Tech Fund Campaign:

make a small donation, link us to your grocery rewards cards and scan your grocery receipts with

Shoparoo! See our fundraising page for details at our newly designed PTO page-bhs-pto.com.

We are working to reach our Technology Fund Goal of 12 document cameras and hope to

purchase the last four by the end of the school year.

Teacher Appreciation Breakfast

Battlefield thanks the PTO for the delicious Teacher Appreciation Breakfast

AfterGrad

Due to a lack of interest from senior parents and the school community, the board unanimously

voted to cancel this year's AfterGrad Celebration. Despite repeated attempts to find a chair and

gain support over the course of the school year, we did not see the backing from the Battlefield

community for this event. The last two meetings (April 10-12) regarding this event drew little

support.

"I invest in things that are important to me so I take this as the senior parents are not interested.

As nice as it is to get money at this point we need volunteers more," commented one person.

"I do want to thank those few who did offer to help and those who helped over the past eight

years," said PTO President Michelle Baker. "This decision was difficult but necessary at this

time."

We wholeheartedly agree with revisiting it again for next year's class. The 2016-17 board will

look at events and priorities in September when they set their budget. If you are interested in a

particular event, please, plan on sharing your ideas then.

Elections

The board is currently seeking nominations for the 2016-17 board. The president and secretary

positions will be open for the 2016-2017 school year. If you are interested in submitting your

name, please, do so this month to a board member. The by-laws require elections to be held prior

to the end of the school year so materials can be exchanged at the end of June. The PTO begins

its fiscal year on July 1.
