WHERE IS MOSUL AND WHY ISIS CAPTURED IT?

Located on the River Tigris, Iraqs second largest city had a population of more than two million.

It is the main industrial city in Northern Iraq

Its relative wealth and strategic significance

FALL OF MOSULThe Fall of Mosul occurred between 410 June 2014, when Islamic State of Iraq and the Syria (ISIS) insurgents, initially led by Abu Abdulrahman al-Bilawi, defeated the Iraqi Army, led by Lieutenant General Mahdi Al-Gharrawi.

HOW DID ISIS TOOK CONTROL OF MOSUL?

THE AFTERMATHAfter the fall of Mosul in Iraq the ISIS insurgents captured the oil refinery and setting the police stations on fire.

After seizing control of Mosul, ISIS forces executed an estimated 4,000 Iraqi Security Force prisoners.

The US and coalition partners trained thousands of Iraqi forces ready for the long-anticipated offensive.About eleven special Iraqi force brigades - each of 2,000 men - were brought in.Hundred more US troops were also sent to assist Iraqi forces in the complex operation which is expected to play out in several phases.WHAT WAS THE PLAN TO RETAKE MOSUL?

For 2017, UNHCR needs USD 212 million.The appeal includes a new request for an additional USD 7 million in the next 10 days .UNHCRs new Hasansham U2 camp, east of Mosul, is ready to shelter 3,000 people ,while another, 25kms south of Mosul, will be ready to receive 6,600 people on Monday.

American firepower has been playing an essential role in softening the opposition from the Islamic State.

Iraqi forces while heading for western Mosul took over the prison in which they found a large uncovered mass.

After taking the airport, Iraqi forces have made key gains in the west of the city, recapturing several bridges, as well as government buildings.
