BASICS OF UX.
WHAT THE HECK IS UX.
U: UserX: Experience
Even my pet dog GINGER would have answered the same.
So, Is there anything else to know about UX?
User = People we deal with.
People like you and me and That guy sitting outside./ Your Friend./ The manager at your bank./ The undergraduate student./ The Retired Grandpa./ The Housewife./ An 11 year old./ The Dentist./ The C.E.O./The Taxi Driver./ The Chef./ Your Girlfriend’s Mom./ The Basketball player./ The Football Coach./
Experience = What these People Feel!Experience = How they Feel!Experience = Why they Feel!
We Design the WhatExperience the HowExperience the Why
And how do we Designthat?
We sit and we study.
Project Briefing
We are told about the project idea, the need for the product/portal and the stake holders interests and strategies.
This is also the phase where our scope of operation is defined. We might meet the stakeholders in person or over a call.
This is where we get our basic Queries answered
Domain Understanding
This is crucial from every angle for us as we get to know or research on the dynamics of a particular domain and how the product/portal we are designing will operate in this particular domain or will solve a particular unique problem
Comparative Research
We look at the competitors or portals similar to what we are designing and understand their proposition, their user-need addressal and analyse the potential pitfalls or advantages that they have overlooked upon and where we couldLeverage our strengths.
Personas
Your Friend./ The manager at your bank./ The undergraduate student./ The Retired Grandpa./ The Housewife./ An 11 year old./ The Dentist./ The C.E.O./ The Taxi Driver./ The Chef./ Your Girlfriend’s Mom./ The Basketball player./ The Football Coach./
The Personas are users specific to the portal and are important part of the UX design processEg. Admin,Super Admin, Normal User, Buyer, Provider
FeaturesWe look at the features that would set the product or the portal apart from the competitorsand keep the user engaged as much a possible. We look at which are the most important featuresthat are to be highlighted and which ones are peripherals that can be placed secondary.
• Which kind of user would want to use these features?• What unique features of your website or product are most appealing to the end-user?• Why would they want to use these features?• What sort of problems are they facing in fulfilling these desires in the present portal?• Are there any other desires that these users have?• What kind of questions do they have about your website or product?• What kind of information will they want if they plan to take any action?• What are their hesitations in performing certain actions or interactions?• How can you touch the user emotionally so as to make them perform the desired action?
User FlowsUser flow is where we decide how a particular user would travel through the portal to reach his goal or complete the task that he is visiting the site for.
WireframesThese are the basic barebones of the system that you are designing which give you idea about the placement of the different features that we are offering on the portal. It also guides the UI design team in understanding what needs to go where and what reacts to which user gesture. Iterations are also an important part of the wireframing.
Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.- SJ
