Legacy Planning

Did you know that the laws of the state where you are living at the time of your death will determine how your estate is settled if you have no will of your own? These laws might not leave your property to the people you want to receive it. And, these laws definitely don’t leave any gift to your church or any other charity. Would you not rather make these decisions yourself?

Consider naming your church as a beneficiary in your will or living trust. The gift could be a set dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, the remainder after other gifts are made, or a gift of that part of the estate left if designated heirs are deceased.

One of the most hopeful and moving moments of each Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church is when those who have completed the requirements for ordination as ministers in our church are asked to take their vows to serve the church in this capacity. These questions date all the way back to John Wesley and the earliest Methodists. When I hear these questions asked, I remember my own calling and response to that call. I experience these new ordinations as an opportunity to renew my covenant with God and the church.

If you are a baptized Christian, you have such a moment, repeated regularly in our midst of Sundays when new

persons profess their faith, or transfer their membership to our church family. I hope witnessing these are moments of recollection and recommitment for you whenever you witness them.

What other moments of your faith journey ought to be recalled from time to time? For most of us, there have been moments of God rescuing us, forgiving us, guiding us, and strengthening us. Shouldn’t these moments be remembered, appreciated, and perhaps even shared? Psalm 103:2 encourages us “Let all that I am praise the Lord, may I never forget the good things he has done for me.”

As Tari Carbaugh and I return for another

year appointed to serve at Bartlesville First Church, we do so renewed, recommitted, and so grateful for the blessings and mercies of God that have brought us thus far, and which will lead us in the future.
