inBartlesville, IndianTerritory,when theCudahy No. 1 “Nellie Johnstone”oilwellcameinagusher.InvestorsGeorge KeelerandWilliam Johnstonecametothis

areaoftheCherokee,DelawareandOsageintheearly1870’stoengage inthe lucrativefur trade.Othertraders includedNelson Carr,whobuiltagristmillonthenorthbankoftheCaneyRiverin1870,andJake Bartles,whobought themill,addedaflourmillandgeneralstore.In the early 1880’s Johnstone and Keeler went to work for

Bartlesandin1884theyopenedacompetingstoreontheriver’ssouthbank.Keeler andJohnstonewanted tobring theAT&SFRailroad to

theirsideoftheriverandwhenKeelersawoilscumonthesurfaceoftheSandCreekin1875theseedswereplanted.In1896,afterlobbying the Cherokees and the Department of Interior, theysecuredanoillease.Theywerealsocampaigningtowinapprovaltocharteratown

siteneartheirstore.Bartlesville was incorporated on January 15, 1897,astheCudahyOilCompanybeganrigginguptheirwellsiteontheedgeofthenewtown.OnMarch25,1897,atadepthof1,303feet,thewellwasshotwithnitroglycerine,gushedtolifeandBartlesville–theenergycity–wasborn.

The Boom…In1899theAT&SFRailroadcompleteditsdepotonthesouth

bank,thefirstoiltrainsdepartedforKansasrefineriesandJakeBartlesmovedhisstorenorthtofoundthetownofDewey,namedafter Admiral George Dewey, whose victory atManila Baywascurrentnews.The prospect of oil was amagnet for oilmen, lease hounds,

drillersandroustabouts.By1904over100wellshadbeendrilledintheBartlesvilleareaandpipelineslaidtotheCoffeyvillerefinery.In1907,thecitycelebratedstatehoodasthehomeofover120oilcompanies.

Those Petroleum Pioneers…Young engineer H.V. Foster arrived in 1902 to manage his

family’s blanket oil lease on all 1.5 million acres of the OsageLands.Soonhedividedtheleaseintosmalleracreagesandsubletthesetootherdrillers,creatingtheIndianTerritoryIlluminatingOilCompany.In 1930, Edward Buehler Delk designed Foster’s La Quinta

Mansion,nowthehomeofOklahomaWesleyanUniversity.FostersoldITIOtoCitiesServicesOilCompanyin1941for$70million,makingCitiesServicethe10thlargestoilcompanyintheUnitedStates.Other legendarypioneersgottheirstartsubleasingfromITIO.

Attorney George Getty visited Bartlesville in 1903 and sublet1,100 acres for five hundred dollars. Young son,J. Paul Getty

bought100sharesinhisfather’sMinnehomaOilCompanyforfivedollars and their firstwell hit pay dirt. The Getty family stayedin Bartlesville for extended periods of time, and J. Paul spentsummersasaroustaboutthroughouthisteenageyears.BankerandbarberFrank PhillipsarrivedinBartlesvillein1904

andstartedCitizenBankandTrust.BrotherL.E.Phillipsjoinedhimandtheydrilledonasubleasenorthoftown.Their4thwell,theAnnaAnderson,cameinagusherandwasfollowedby80straightproducingwells.Frank built his Bartlesville mansion, now the Frank Phillips

Home, in 1909. When oil skyrocketed duringWorld War I, thebrothersacquiredanothersub-lease,broughtinagusher,whichproduced 100 barrels per day, and formedPhillips Petroleum Companyin1917with27employees.

Innovation…Utilitymagnate H. L. Dougherty came to Bartlesville in 1912

to organize the Empire Gas and Fuel Company, which openeda research facility in 1916. Dougherty and the Chamber ofCommercesecuredaU.S.BureauofMinesPetroleumResearchCenter for Bartlesville in 1918. EmpireGaswould later becomeCities Service Oil Company.Phillips Petroleum added its own research center in 1925,

the same year Frank established hisWoolaroc Ranch retreat.Phillipssuccessfullypromoteditsnewaviationfuelin1927whentheWoolarocplane,pilotedbyArtGoebels,wonthehistoricDolePineappleRace.Phillips attracted Russian immigrant Armais Arutunoff to

Bartlesville in 1928. Arutunoff invented an electric submersiblemotorthatcouldpumpoilfromdeepinsidewells.HefoundedtheREDAPumpCompanyin1930,whichlatermergedwithTRW.TheBartlesvilleplantisnowownedandoperatedbySchlumberger.In1956PhillipsPetroleumopenedtheworld’sfirstcommercial

plasticstechnicalcenter,whichpioneeredamultitudeofusesforPhillips’innovativeplasticsuchasMarlexandK-Resin.ThecenterisnowadivisionofChevron Phillips Chemical Company.1956 Bartlesville also saw the completion of Frank Lloyd

Wright’sonlyskyscraper,thePrice Tower.Thebuildingwasthecorporateheadquarters of theH.C. Price Company, oneof theworld’sleadingpipelineconstructionfirms.

Phillips Petroleum andConocomerged in 2002 to becomeConocoPhillips.ConocoPhillips repositionedasConocoPhillips andPhillips 66 in 2012. Bartlesville now serves as the globalservicescenterforbothcorporations,aswellastheresearcharmofPhillips66.Energy industry products and services brought international

giantsSiemens andABB to Bartlesville in 1999.Service and Technology Corporation opened in 1986 and entrepreneurial

startupslikeFieldTechnologyServices,nowownedbySGS,findsuccesshere. Theyoperateinacitythatstillboastsasmall,butthrivingindependentoilandgasindustry.

Today…At the turn of the 20th century Bartlesville boomed with

wildcatters and oil pioneers. 21st century pioneers work ininformation technology, engineering, finance, training andprocurement.ManyofthesemoderndaypioneerscanbeseenindowntownrestaurantsandbarstoenjoyvariedcuisineandhearlivemusicthatisuniquelyOklahoma.WhileBartlesvillehonorsthepast,wealsoembracethefutureandlovetocelebrate.

La Quinta MansionTheLaQuintaMansionwasdesigned in1930bynotedKansasCity architect Edward Buehler Delk. H. V.
