Text

Barroso wrote Rabbi Levi Matusof on the Jewish New Year – or Rosh Ashanah – expressing hope that the coming year would spell the end of a period of global crisis that impacted heavily on European society. He wrote that the financial and economic upheaval in Europe brought on a "moral crisis", rearing its ugly head in the form of xenophobia and exclusionary politics.

He expressed hope that as Europe's economy bounced back so too would respect of its own values: “What in the end is at stake is not only economic recovery but rather our fundamental values, the European values, the very basis upon which the European project rests".

The Rabbinical Centre, happy to receive the greetings, said it hoped the unexpected letter would come to indicate the start of a more forceful approach to anti-Semitism in Europe, at all levels of society: “Barroso's welcome comments need to be internalised by all Europeans, from the unemployed… to the highest levels of the European institutions”.

Thanking the Rabbinical Centre of Europe for its “attachment to the European project”, Barroso wished all a Shana Tova.
