hoW muCh Will my CourSe CoSt For 2012/13UK/EEA StudentsThe amount you pay will depend both on your circumstances and the course you are enrolling on. The full cost of your course will be the course’s tuition fees plus its examination fees and a College registration fee where this applies. For some courses you will also be required to pay additional supplementary fees, for (e.g.) materials. Generally, for one academic year, the fees are as follows:
You are between16 and 18 years old on 31 August 2012
Tuition Fees• Courses up to Level 3 do not charge a
tuition fee to 16-18 year-olds• For Access, Foundation Degrees and
HE Courses, fees for 16-18 year-olds are the same as those described below for students 19 years-old and over
• College Registration Fees: Nil• Exam fees: Nil• There may be some additional
supplementary fees for equipment that is vital to your course
You will be 19 years old or over on 31st August 2012If you are on means-tested benefits, Government Policy at the moment is that you will be entitled to concessionary fees in 2012/13 as long as you can declare that the course you have chosen will give you appropriate skills to help you enter employment and that you are looking for work.
Students who sign a Self Declaration Form to that effect, backed up by appropriate proof, do not pay any course fees. This currently applies to adults in receipt of the following benefits:
• Income support• Working Tax Credit (note: dependents only)• Pension Guarantee Credit• ESA (not WRAG)• Council Tax Benefit• Housing Benefit
You will still have to pay any applicable supplementary fees. Note that this entitlement is still subject to change in Government Policy. If you are on Jobseeker’s Allowance or Employment Support Allowance (WRAG) then you are entitled to concessionary fees, and will not be charged Tuition, Examination, or College Registration fees, but you will still have to pay any applicable Supplementary Fees. This is also the case if you are a registered asylum-seeker supported by NASS payments. You will also only have to pay applicable Supplementary Fees for a course where you and that specific course meet one of the following criteria:
• The course you are doing is an Adult Basic Skills Literacy or Numeracy course.
• Your course is an Entry Level or Level 1 vocational course to give you skills you need to progress on to your first Full Level 2 qualification later.
• You are under 24 years old and the course will get you your first Full Level 2 qualification.
• You are under 24 years old and the course will get you your first Full Level 3 qualification – note that this also applies to Full Level 4 qualifications.
If any of the above criteria do not apply to you, then you will be expected to pay full fees. These are as follows:
Tuition Fees• Courses up to Full Level 3 – Where a course is for full-time
students the tuition fee will be £1,500.00.
– Tuition fees on courses for part-time students vary according to course hours. As an example, tuition fees for a 120-hour course will be £400.00.
• Foundation Degrees and Higher Education (HE)
– The year’s tuition for second year students will be £3,500.00.
– For first-year students the year’s tuition fees in 2012/13 will be £5,200.00.
Registration Fees (part-time only)• Courses up to Level 3 - £20.00• Foundation Degrees and HE – None Examination Fees• Examination fees vary according to the
qualification and the price of this as set by the exam’s Awarding Body
For the latest information, full course listings and details of how to apply for a course at Barnet and Southgate College, please visit www.barnetsouthgate.ac.uk, email: [email protected] or call 020 8266 4000 37
Supplementary Fees• There may be some additional charges
for equipment that is vital to your course
N.B. You may have additional tutorial and/or study hours in addition to your in-class course hours. You are not charged for these additional hours however, and for all purposes the core hours of your course are usually 16 hours a week or less.
Fee-Status AssessmentWhen you come in for your interview you will be assessed as to what fee you will have to pay and whether you meet criteria for waived tuition and examination fees. If you would like advice about whether you might be entitled to any waived fees, please speak to one of our Admissions Staff on 020 8266 4000. If you find you are not entitled to any waived fees but think you might be eligible for possible financial assistance to help pay for your course please speak to one of our Student Services Advisors.
ProofIf you think you may be entitled to waived fees, we will need to see up-to-date proof of qualifications and/or that you will when you start the course be on the appropriate benefits. If it is on the grounds of your qualifications and the course you are doing then we will need to see the appropriate certificates, and your Unique Learner Number will also be useful (if you know it). If you are receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance or Employment Support Allowance (WRAG) you will need to bring proof from your DWP office dated within the last two weeks confirming that you will when you start the course be receiving benefit. ES40s will not be accepted as evidence of Jobseeker’s Allowance. Under current Government Policy, if you are on means-tested benefits and doing your course to enhance your employability skills, you will need to bring a letter from the benefits office detailing your benefits,
dated within the last month, or else an earlier letter supported by current bank statement showing the same benefit payment. If you are a NASS-supported asylum-seeker you will need to bring your latest receipts.
Sources of Financial SupportThere may be financial support available for you. For further information please go to: http://www.barnetsouthgate.ac.uk/The-College/course-fees2/sources-of-financial-support
Other helpful linkswww.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance.
Learner Support FundThe Learner Support Fund is for learners in Further Education in financial hardship.Learners aged 19 and over on the 31st August 2012 who are in receipt of means-tested or disability benefits can apply for funds to help pay for course-related expenses such as childcare and travel. It is advisable to apply early, especially for childcare support, because funds are limited and do run out quickly. Application packs are available at every College campus just before the start of the new academic year. If you wish to apply to this fund, you must see a Student Services Information and Advice Officer in the College. They may also be able to give information about educational trusts and charities.
Costs for materialsFor all courses you will need to buy stationery and course materials. The cost of these items varies for each course, but is particularly high for courses in Art & Design, Media and Performing Arts, Beauty, Hairdressing, Hospitality and Catering, and Construction because for these courses you will often need to buy uniforms and items of equipment. This will be clarified at your interview.
International StudentsInternational students are those who are coming to the College from outside the EEA. To attend one of the College’s mainstream courses you will need to have a Student Visa that permits you to be in the UK for full-time study. The tuition fees for one academic year, for international learners who have a student visa to study full-time in the UK are:
• Courses up to Full Level 3 – Where a course is for full-time
students the tuition fee will be £5,368.00.
– Tuition fees on courses for part-time students vary according to course hours. As an example, tuition fees for a 63-hour course will be £751.00.
• Foundation Degrees and Higher Education (HE)
– For both first-year and second-year international students the tuition fees for Foundation Degrees will be £5,368.00.
The exact fee will depend on the course you decide to enrol on.
How do you know if you are eligible for home-student fees?
For Further EducationHome students normally have settled status in the UK or European Economic Area.(EEA) Asylum seekers may also be eligible for Home fees.
For Higher EducationHome students normally have settled status in the UK or European Economic Area and may be subject to three years residency requirements. You will be assessed as to your eligibility for home-student or international-student fees when you come to enrol.

We will actively work to remove conditions which place people at a disadvantage, and vigorously combat prejudice and bigotry, in order for all people to achieve their potential regardless of race, belief, gender, sexual orientation, disability or age. Barnet and Southgate College further recognises that different forms of disadvantage can and do interact. Where multiple disadvantages are found, we will take action to remove them. To make sure that everyone is treated equally, we would like you to work with us to carry out this policy, and to check that there are no hidden obstacles to learner achievement. In order to do this we need to monitor learner enquiries, applications, enrolments and learning progress. The College has declared its commitment to expose and eliminate racial prejudice where it is found to exist. In order for us to achieve our goal it is essential that you complete the Ethnicity section on the application form.
