STUDENTS at Barnet and Southgate College have been given a head start in their employment search thanks to an innovative new collaboration with

REED NCFE. The College recently opened the Employment Zone at the Wood Street Campus in High Barnet, and it is proud to be the only College in London to host such an initiative. The Employment Zone recently played host to company Chairman James Reed as he gave the initiative his seal of approval, meeting Employ-ment Zone staff and College Principal David Byrne. Entrepreneur James Reed is the son of Sir Alec Reed who originally founded the com-pany in 1960. The REED NCFE initiative offers students exclusive access to local vacancies and jobs that are rarely advertised. They will also receive tailored training in the skills they will need specifically for these jobs, to help ensure maximum employability once they have completed their studies at College.

The REED NCFE Partnership is one of the UK’s leading employment and skills pro-viders, part of the REED Group, which draws

on 50 years of recruitment experience it has worked with many thousands of employers from small, local businesses to large corpora-tions. Research commissioned by the Associa-tion of Colleges (AoC) finds that parents admit they are struggling to give the right advice to prepare young people for the world of work*. The research finds:• One fifth of parents (20%) feel out of their

depth advising their children about careers, whilst 32% say they only feel comfortable talking about jobs with which they are familiar.

• Some parents readily admit their children are ill-prepared for work, with more than one in 10 (11%) confessing they wouldn’t even employ their own child.

• 82% of school teachers don’t feel they have the appropriate knowledge to advise pupils on careers; which is where coming to College can help.

• 72% of parents think education should be more focused on preparing young people for employment and 94% of parents want their

child to have more access to employers and businesses.

The REED NCFE Employment Zone at Bar-net and Southgate College trains students to understand how the world of work operates; they will be taught how to think and behave in a work environment, improve their interview skills and will be given careers advice and work experience. In a recent survey of 1,264 employ-ers conducted by REED, 97% put the workplace ‘mind-set’ element ahead of skills, as some-thing they look for when recruiting. In a further study of 30,000 CVs (comparing successful CVs against unsuccessful ones), REED found that demonstrating a workplace mind-set on a CV “tripled your chances of getting and keeping” the best jobs.

David Byrne, Principal of Barnet and Southgate College said:

“Being able to help our students successfully compete in a ruthless job market is one of our key objectives as a College. The partnership with REED NCFE does just this by giving our students

relevant careers advice and training, alongside their studies, which helps them find the right job at the end of their course. At the same time the exclusive Employment Zone will provide fully trained, potential employees to local business and services, which reduces recruitment costs and gives our students a head start in their work-ing lives. We are proud to be the only College in London offering this service, which guarantees students real access to real jobs.”

Nick Hughes, Senior Operations Manager for REED NCFE, said:

“Since the launch of a similar partnership in January 2012 at Bournemouth and Poole College, the service has had an average of 200 live vacan-cies each month, placing a huge number of stu-dents in employment at the end of their courses. We hope and expect the same success for Barnet and Southgate College.”

*Omnibus research of 777 parents of children aged 11-18 and 500 teachers of Key stages 3&4 in the UK. Research conducted online by ResearchBods from 10 to 22 October.

The Best of Both WorldsEmployer Apprenticeships at Barnet and Southgate College

Spotlight on: Kishan NarayanHR Apprentice Case Study

Spotlight on: Abbie FergusonMarketing Apprentice Case Study

1. What’s your name? Abbie Ferguson

2. How old are you? 19 years old

3. Where do you live? Edgware

4. Which school did you go to? Copthall Girls School

5. How old were you when you started thinking about an Apprenticeship? 17 years old

6. How did you find out about Apprenticeships? My sixth form never really told the students about apprenticeships or any other options apart from university. My older brother started an apprenticeship in a hospital after school and I’d seen him work his way up. My twin brother then decided to start an apprenticeship at a football club rather than going on to sixth form like I did, and I saw how much he loved working, being able to earn a salary whilst learning at the same time.

7. Did you carry on and study for your A Levels at school? And if so what A Levels did you study? I couldn’t decide what to do so I just ended up staying on at my school’s sixth form to do my A Levels. I studied Media Studies, ICT and Geography.

8. Did you think about going to University after school?I had no idea what I wanted to do after sixth form. I didn’t want to go to university, spend £9,000 a year on course fees and learn about a subject I didn’t even know if I would enjoy working in when I finished. Especially since I knew people coming out of university and either not getting jobs or having to work in completely different fields just to earn money.

9. What appealed to you about the Apprenticeship scheme? That I could gain work experience in a field that I could see myself enjoying and growing in. I knew that as an apprentice I would be taught everything I needed to know so wasn’t worried about jumping straight into the working world. Also, I knew it would be nice to earn money whilst learning too.

10. How did you find out about the Apprenticeships at the College and how did you apply for your current position?I decided to use my own initiative and search for an apprenticeship for when I finished sixth form. I found out about the Marketing apprenticeship at Barnet and Southgate College in my local newspaper.

11. Which department do you work in, and when did you start your Apprenticeship at the College?I have been working in the Marketing department at Barnet and Southgate College since starting my apprenticeship in December 2011 and my job title is Marketing Assistant. My apprenticeship was only supposed to be for one year but I was offered to extend my contract by another year as I was doing really well.

12. Do you have to still study whilst working as an apprentice, what are the levels you have to complete? Whilst working as an apprentice I’ve been studying to achieve my NVQ Level 3 in Business and Administration, starting off at Level 2. When I first started my apprenticeship I left sixth form and

during the last year my sixth form allowed me to continue my A Levels as an external student whilst doing my apprenticeship at the same time. Even though it was hard work, there’s a great sense of achievement as I completed my A Levels whilst studying for my NVQ and working in a full-time job.

13. How have you found your time as an apprentice? I have loved working as a Marketing apprentice at Barnet and Southgate College. I am able to work and learn at the same time in a team that is supportive and treat me as an equal. I’ve gained experience in different fields such as PR, design and events, I love that I’m not constantly sat at my desk inputting forms. I get to work at events, assist on photo and video shoots and work with different departments around the College as well as helping other members of the team. The longer I’ve been here the more responsibility I have been given, such as managing road shows and the College’s open events, which has helped me gain incredible skills and valuable experience.

14. Would you recommend the Apprenticeship scheme to others? I would certainly recommend the apprenticeship scheme to others. I definitely underestimated how hard it would be to work and learn at the same time but it is all worth it when you earn the qualifications and grow as a professional. Earning a wage helps you to gain independence, allowing you to have opportunities you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.

15. What do you hope to do in the future; do you think you will carry on working in Marketing? Doing the apprenticeship has confirmed that Marketing is the field that I would like to continue working in. I would love to see myself in a company marketing films and television programmes sometime in the future.

16. Will you consider going to University now, what would you study? University is definitely an option that I would look into, but I don’t feel the pressure to make any rushed decisions. If I do decide to go I am 100 per cent sure of the course I would study and have experience that would be beneficial. At the moment I am focusing solely on gaining work experience and would much prefer to work my way up in the Marketing industry. I am considering doing a part-time or evening degree so that I can still work and earn without taking time out. There are even part-time higher education courses based at the College that I would consider. My apprenticeship has prepared me to work and learn at the same time so I know if I did decide to go into higher education, I would be able to deal with the demands of a degree, whether it’s full or part-time.

17. Overall do you think you are in a better position than some of your friends that went onto Higher Education?I definitely think I am in a better position than some of my friends that went onto university. One of my best friends goes to a Russell Group university and she has realised that university is not for her and neither is the course she is studying. Whereas, my apprenticeship has confirmed that Marketing is the career I would like to continue in. I’ve been gaining invaluable experience whilst gaining qualifications and earning money, all at the same time. It really has suited me much more than going straight into more full-time education.

1. What’s your name?Kishan Narayan

2. How old are you?19 years old

3. Where do you live?Barnet

4. Which school did you go to?East Barnet School

5. How old were you when you started thinking about an Apprenticeship? 18 years old

6. How did you find out about Apprenticeships? My sister was doing an apprenticeship so I saw that she really enjoyed her time whilst working and studying at the same time and it was something that I thought would be good for me too. I also had seen the College advertising and it looked like a good place to work.

7. Did you carry on and study for A Levels at school? And if so what A Levels did you study?Yes I did, I studied A Levels in ICT and Business Studies and I also did and AS Level in French.

8. Did you think about going to University after school?I did think about it but I’d already found out about apprenticeships from my sister so I knew that was what I wanted to pursue.

9. What appealed to you about the Apprenticeship scheme? The main thing that appealed to me about the apprenticeship scheme was that I could gain work experience in HR whilst gaining a qualification at the same time – the fact I was going to get paid as well was a bonus.

10. How did you find out about the Apprenticeships at the College and how did you apply for your current position?I found out about the position online on the Barnet and Southgate College website, I knew that HR was a field I was interested in working in so I applied. I found the application form quite straightforward and there was only one interview involved.

11. Which department do you work in, and when did you start your Apprenticeship at the College?I’ve been working in the Human Resources (HR) department at Barnet and Southgate College since starting my apprenticeship in December 2011. At the end of February 2013 I applied for a permanent position in the department and I got the job so I am now employed as a full-time HR Administrator, I’m so pleased in my new role. I can’t believe that within a year of my apprenticeship I was ready to move into a fully paid permanent role.

12. Do you have to still study whilst working as an apprentice, what are the

levels you have to complete? Whilst working as an apprentice I’ve been studying to achieve my NVQ Level 3 in Business and Administration, starting off at Level 2. But I’m now going to focus on completing my HR qualifications and eventually I want to achieve my CIPD accreditation.

13. How have you found your time as an apprentice? I’ve really enjoyed my time as an apprentice as the work has been so varied. At the time the College was going through a re-structure so the HR department was extremely busy and it was a challenging time but I learnt how to work independently and I worked out how I could help the team at an important time. I know this experience helped me get my permanent job as it helped me with learning how to prioritise my work and improve my interpersonal skills.

14. Would you recommend the Apprenticeship scheme to others? I would certainly recommend the apprenticeship scheme to others it’s really a stepping stone into the world of work and would suit you if a solely academic route is not for you. Plus you get paid. There are so many advantages it is great working as a team and seeing how the world of work operates but at the same time you are still learning. I really enjoyed meeting up with the other apprentices at the College during our lessons as we could share experiences and socialise and we really supported each other. We’ve all become good friends.

15. What do you hope to do in the future; do you think you will carry on working in HR? Yes without a doubt I hope to stay on at the College and complete my HR qualifications as they do a number of part-time higher education courses at Barnet and Southgate College.

16. Will you consider going to University now, what would you study? I’m not sure as I don’t think it’s for me now as I would rather work my way up in the HR industry.

17. Overall do you think you are in a better position than some of your friends that went onto Higher Education?Yes I definitely think I am better off as I am in a job with a salary now that many graduates would accept, but I have been able to achieve all of this by the age of 19. I think the work experience really stands me in good stead going forward and if I stay in HR I think by the time I’m 21 I’ll be doing really well. I have friends who have graduated and they’re doing part-time jobs and they still don’t have any idea of which career they want to follow but I do.

courses on offer see page 13.

Here’s what Dominica Tober (pictured here), a Business

Industries student at Barnet and Southgate College said of

her experiences:

“I finished school in Poland when I was 19 and I came

back to studying at 24, after I moved to the UK. In the past two

years. I’ve completed an ESOL course and then went onto an

IT Multimedia and Accounting AAT part-time course. I didn’t

speak any English and now I’m almost fluent! I’m so happy to

be at college as there are so many opportunities open to me

now and I can fit my studies in with being a busy mum and

wife. One day I hope to be an accountant or bookkeeper.”

Catering & Hospitality

Ready Steady Cook! Catering Courses at Barnet and Southgate College!

The Catering and Hospitality depart-ment provides students with the opportunity to learn, develop and practise skills that they will need

when they work within the industry. As a cater-ing student you will develop new skills in the College’s specialist larder, pastry and produc-tion kitchens based at the Southgate Campus. Trainee chefs also work alongside food service students within formal and bistro restaurants, which offer a realistic work environment and are open to students, staff and the public. The hospitality teaching areas are newly equipped to professional kitchen standards with all the utensils required to prepare both classic and contemporary cuisines.

A particular highlight of coming to Barnet and Southgate College is that the Catering and Hospitality teaching team possesses a wealth of industry experience and has impressive links with some of London’s top hospitality establishments and organisations such as Har-rods, BBC Masterchef, Gordon Ramsay Hold-ings, The Ivy, The Hilton Hotel, The Ritz, The Savoy and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, to name but a few. Professional chefs and experts from these organisations regularly visit the College to

deliver workshops and lectures, and also host students in their own top London hotels and restaurants. These student placements often lead to full-time employment once their course is complete. Tanine Nicholas, pictured here (on the left) is 24 and is studying for a Professional Cookery course. She said: “I’ve always been interested in catering and I’ve really enjoyed my course so far. College even helped me apply for a temporary job in Harrods as a mobile chef over Christmas, they were so impressed that they’ve now taken me on permanently as a Com-mis Chef on a part-time basis, so I work there for three days and also come into College four days a week. The tutors invited the chefs from Harrods into College, which is how I decided to apply – they came in to carry out skills demonstrations for the students. Once I’ve finished my course I see myself working full-time in Harrods. College really has turned my life around and given me a lifelong career.”

Construction Industries

IF AN ACADEMIC route isn’t for you and you’re looking

for a hands-on approach to study that will enhance your

job prospects, why not build yourself a brighter future

with a construction course at Barnet and Southgate

College? Part-time Construction Industry courses are taught

in purpose-built Construction facilities at the Grahame Park

and Southgate Campuses. Sub-

jects include: Bricklaying, Car-

pentry, Electrical Installation,

Site Supervisory Studies and

Technology & Energy Efficiency.

The Construction Depart-

ment has strong links with

local and national employers

that complement the excellent

construction training offered at

the College and teaching staff

are experienced and qualified

in their field.

Here's what Peter McNamara, a ex-student who now

teaches Construction, said of his experiences at the College:

“After my GCSE’s I started helping my Dad with paint-

ing and decorating jobs, as he works in the building trade, but

I didn’t feel like I was challenging myself enough. After a few

months I decided to enrol at Barnet and Southgate College on

a Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery Diploma, and over the next

four years I progressed onto Levels 2 and 3. I loved college as

I was actually studying something I was interested in and I felt

like I belonged. I was never very good at maths and literacy at

school, so I excelled at the practical element of the course and

made a lot of new friends. It was like I had been given a sec-

ond chance. Once I’d finished my course I was offered a job

working within the Construc-

tion Department at Barnet and

Southgate College and I jumped

at the chance of working with

my tutors. I’m now studying

part-time for my PTTLS teach-

ing qualification at the College,

as well as teaching construction

students at the Grahame Park

Campus. I can really relate to

the students as I know that some

of them struggled at school

and coming to college and studying for a vocational

qualification is a fresh start for them. I hope to be teach-

ing full-time once I’ve finished my PTTLS course, I

really enjoy my work and can’t wait to be a fully-fledged Con-

struction tutor.”

Creative Arts

Mehrak and a number of internationally

acclaimed Iranian artists have all

donated works to the collection,

`Art for Alireza'. These works will be

featured in a catalogue especially created for the

Art Monaco 2013 exhibition and Christie's Fine Art

Auction. The exhibition was organised by Queen

Farah Pahlavi, Empress of Iran, in memory of her late

son Prince Alireza Pahlavi.

Some of Mehrak's artwork is also in the private

collection of the Empress. Before enrolling at College,

Mehrak had an eventful life. Originally from Iran, she

now lives in Southgate but she has also lived in Hol-

land and France. Iran has strongly influenced much

of her work, which ranges from sculpture to digital

paintings. She was inspired by an empowering speech

from the Empress; wife of the former Shah of Iran,

in the creation of one of her paintings. The unusual

piece, entitled `Hope' incorporates symbolism from

Persian culture and is now to be auctioned at Art

Monaco 2013. Mehrak is destined for a successful

career as an international fine artist.

David Byrne, Principal of Barnet and Southgate

College said: “It's rare for one of our Creative Industries

students to receive such critical international acclaim

whilst still studying at College, but this has been the

case for Mehrak Davoudi, and we wish her well for

the future.”

Debbie GrimmondStudent from Barnet and Southgate College

“I enrolled at Barnet and Southgate College in 2009 on the Adult Foundation Skills Course. I was 43 years old and was unsure how to get back into education. The course really helped me with foundation skills such as English, Maths and IT. This then gave me the confidence to apply for a number of other courses at the College and I’ve gone onto complete a number of catering skill levels including the NVQ Level 2. I’ve also won a catering award whilst at College and helped at a number of their events. Being a part-time student has been ideal as it has had to work around me bringing up six children and it has also helped me encourage two of my children to enrol at the College also. I urge anyone who thinks they may be too old or are unsure of what to do next to go along to one of the Open Events at the College and discuss their opportunities. With my new qualifications under my belt, I obtained a new job at the London Olympic Village. I really couldn’t have done it without the support of Barnet and Southgate College. I got to help plan and design menus for all the athletes and attending dignitaries, working in the British cuisine ‘pod’. The highlight had to have been when I served Usain Bolt and Team GB’s Tom Daley! They asked me lots of questions about the food and what was in each dish, I felt really proud that I helped prepare what they chose to eat. It was hard work, especially on the day of the Opening Ceremony when we were rushed off our feet, but I loved every minute, it really was a once in a lifetime experience. If someone had told me four years ago that I would have this experience I would have said that they were joking but it’s true and it really has helped change my life.”

“I did it… and I loved it”

Hair & Beauty

A STUDENT from Barnet and Southgate College won a national charitable award to help continue her education and go onto University. Fargol Ranjbar-Larijani, from Barnet won £1,500 from the Helena Kennedy Foundation.

Fargol experienced a series of personal obstacles during her studies, but despite these challenges she continued and excelled on her Beauty Therapy course at Barnet and Southgate College. Fargol has chosen a career in Spa Management and Beauty Ther-apy, as it’s an area of expertise she has been fascinated in ever since she was a young girl.

She one day hopes to own her own Spa and Beauty Salon and to be able to pass on the skills that she has accumulated at college and university to trainees that she employs. Fargol is well aware of the financial burden of going onto university and she aims to work part-time to support herself through her higher education studies.

Fargol Ranjbar-Larijani said: “The bursary from the Helena Kennedy Foundation will allow me to buy textbooks and profes-sional kits required for my Spa Management course at Derby Uni-versity, as well as paying for my University booking fee. I’m so grateful and glad I applied for the award whilst at college and urge other students to do the same. The main thing is that the bursary will allow me to concentrate on my studies rather than constantly worrying about money.”

The Helena Kennedy Foundation exists to support disad-

vantaged students in further and adult education, to help trans-form their lives through higher education and fair access to the graduate professions. The charity provides financial support, one to one advice, skills training and work placement opportunities.

It was founded in 1998 to take forward the recommenda-tions from a report by Baroness Helena Kennedy QC. The Foun-dation has gone onto support almost 1,000 further education college leavers to succeed in higher education, 96% of which have gone onto to complete their course, which is well above the national average.

Barnet and Southgate Principal, David Byrne said: “Barnet and Southgate College is very proud of Fargol’s achievements, she has demonstrated that if you’re committed to your future goals you will find a way to succeed. She has shown initiative, self-determi-nation and enterprise, and we wish her every success at University and for her future career in Spa Management.”

Health, Education and Social Care Students & Staff Raise Vital Funds for Local Hospice

STUDENTS from the Health, Education and Social Care department of Barnet and Southgate College successfully completed a five mile sponsored char-

ity walk, from the College’s Wood Street Cam-pus in Barnet to Hadley Woods. The sponsored walk was arranged to help raise vital funds for The Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, which is based in Barnet. The charity is an innovative children's hospice service, providing practical and emotional support to life-limited and life-threatened children and their families. The hos-pice seeks to serve around 350 children and their families living within the communities of Enfield, Barnet, Camden, Haringey and Isling-ton; they are currently raising funds to try and build their own premises and continue with their community outreach work. Over sixty college students and staff took part in the walk and raised an amazing £1,000 for the charity.

David Byrne, Principal of the College, offi-cially presented the amount as a giant cheque to Sarah Austin from Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, alongside Level 2 and 3 Childcare and Health and Social Care students from the College. The College’s Health and Social Care Department are proud of their continued rela-tionship with the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hos-

Motor Vehicle & Motorsport Industries

MOTORSPORTS students at Barnet and Southgate College took part in the final North London heat of the British Schools Karting Championship (BSKC). They took part with the knowledge that the first seven teams that qualified would take part in the national finals of the BSKC in the South East.

The Motorsports student team were com-peting in their second heat and the weather was against them with rain, sleet and snow, but the students were not fazed by this and morale was high. The competition was very strong and conditions on the track were wet and slippery, so the racing had to be very tactical.

The team was racing in six out of twelve races, up against thirty other North London teams so it was a competitive and tense day of racing. Against all the odds the Barnet and Southgate College team narrowly missed out on a podium place but they successfully made it through to the national finals for the first time ever!

Well done to all the students and staff involved and good luck to the team for the finals. Pictured here are the jubilant Motorsport team in their official driving overalls.

National BCS ChampionshipsT

ALENTED Barnet and Southgate College Sports students qualified to take part in the British Colleges Sport (BCS) National Championships,

The BCS Championship is an annual event and 2013 marked the 35th National Champion-ships making it the longest running student competition and biggest annual multi-sport event in the UK. Each year more than 2,500 students and staff from across the UK meet up for sporting competitions in 15 different sports and this year was no different.

As well as competing in their chosen sports of tennis and football the students from Barnet and Southgate College were also com-

peting for points for the London region, a total of ten regions competed from across the UK, with the West Midlands being chosen as the overall winner on points.

A MOSAIC unveiled at the new Finch-ley Memorial Hospital as part of its Arts Pro-gramme was designed and created by students from Barnet and Southgate College and Arts 89, a not-for-profit social enterprise element of

the College, which is based at the Wood Street Campus in High Barnet. The College and Arts 89 offer work and training in the visual arts to support people living with and recovering from mental health problems.

The College offers courses in the visual arts to help support people living with and recovering from mental health problems, lead-ing towards a BTEC in Work Skills. Subjects on the course include creating mosaics, face paint-ing and producing hand-made pieces of art. Students on the course also put on art exhibi-tions and work closely with local volunteers, the aim being to improve their own mental well-being and to help encourage others to do the same by ‘picturing life differently’.

The mosaic’s original design was inspired by College student, Eileen Ly around the theme of ‘the four seasons’, where each panel of the mosaic depicts one of the seasons. The final mosaic was worked on by all of the students on the course and took several months to com-plete. Arts 89 were formed in 2007 taking its name from the year that the Community Link programme was formed, (1989). It is part of the College’s Supported Learning Department.

They now raise funds for much of their work through commissions and sales of art, working closely with the local community at the Col-lege’s Wood Street Campus in High Barnet.

David Byrne, Principal of Barnet and Southgate College said: “The central aim of the College’s Supported Learning course and Arts 89 is to bring art into everyday life to help sup-port those with mental health problems. The students, tutors and volunteers that work as part of the not-for-profit social enterprise are brought together by their passion for art and improving well-being in the community. We are very proud that the mosaic designed and created by our stu-dents will now be on public display at Finchley Memorial Hospital, I’m sure for many to admire for years to come.”

We can help you with a range of issues covering financial, emotional, housing and relationship difficulties; we can also support you when coursework or assignments seem just a little too hard!

All our trained staff are friendly and approachable and available to listen to your needs. Drop in or make an appointment at any campus or email us at [email protected] or text  ‘SOS’ to 88020.

Additional Learning Support (ALS)ALS is on offer to students on all further education mainstream courses who have an additional learning need(s). Often this has already been identified at school and you are able to explain and evidence what sort of learning support is effective for you.

Alternatively, your learning need may be identified by your course tutors, or you may have thought for many years your learning needs were missed at school and you would like to speak to someone to find out more.

ALS will assess your skills and put together a learning support package to suit your needs. ALS learning support packages offer a range of interventions such as 1:1 out of class, in-class learning support, British Sign Language (BSL), note-taking, workshops for coursework and assistive technology (AT). AT covers all sorts of equipment and software which can increase your access to the curriculum e.g. dictaphones, coloured overlays, large screen monitors, adjustable height workstations, Dragon software and much more.

We also offer support with exam access arrangements ensuring you get your full entitlement e.g. extra time, rest breaks, reader, scribe etc.
