Unbelievably summer is with us again, with an unusually high calibre of releases. French film is particularly well suited to warm summer evenings - or in fact those slightlychilly ones we usually have. A raft of dramas ranging from the slapstick romantic comedy of Heartbreaker to the coolsophistication of Gainsbourg. And starting off this invasion we have the fiftieth anniversary re-issue of the archetypal new wave film Godard’s A Bout de souffle.Elsewhere in the programme we mark the passing of thegreatest of cinematographers and the master of technicolour,Jack Cardiff, with three of his most ravishing creations.Enjoy the beach, enjoy the sun but remember the coolest place this summer is down at The Barn.

Athoughtful and stylish addition to the genrejumping ladder that is Winterbotom’s career.

Sebergquotes books and ideas and names whileBelmondo measures his profile against Bogart's.

While the basictale of a man returning the discarded wallet of awoman and proceeding to stalk, and be stalkedby her may sound contrived, Resnais is such askillful artist that it’s almost impossible not to besucked in. Visually sumptuous, Resnais explores the emotional twists and turns of ageing in a filmpart thriller and part psycho-sexual daydream.

Rashômon [12A]

Friday 23 July / 8pmSaturday 24 July / 8pmSunday 25 July / 3pmDirector Akira KurosawaCast Toshirô Mifune, Machiko Kyô, Masayuki MoriJapan 1951 / B&W / Subtitles / 1hr 28mThis new digital print is a precurser to ourKurosawa season coming in the autumn, which marks the 100th anniversay of the great man’s birth. Now looked upon as one of the director'scanonical films, the title Rashômon haseven entered the language of film to denotea story told through multiple perspectives -the stand-out and formally bold narrativeapproach of Kurosawa's crime and mysterydrama. Set in 12th century Kyoto, the filmreveals an ambush, rape and murder in four contradictory accounts, each throughthe eyes of a different protagonist. The subtle shifts in point of view, the striking cinematography and powerfulperformances by Toshiro Mifune andMasayuki Mori make this that all too rare thing - a film that simply demands repeated viewing.

Whatever Works [12A]

Friday 30 July / 5pm & 8pmSaturday 30 July / 5pm & 8pmSunday 1 & Monday 2 August / 8pmDirector Woody AllenCast Larry David, Evan Rachel WoodUSA/France 2009 / Colour / 1hr 32m

12 13

OK so it’s not the most original or subtle work of Allen's career but it is his first movie in five years set in New York City and is also among his most upbeat and hopeful – despite centring on a protagonist who addresses the audience early on to say "Let me tell you right now: I'm not alikeable guy." His name is Boris Yelnikoff. He's a retired genius physicist who was ‘almost’nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. In a roleoriginally written for Zero Mostel 30 years ago,Allen has wisely cast Larry David, who essentiallyturns Boris into a meaner, more contemptuousversion of his Curb Your Enthusiasm persona.Boris makes a living teaching kids how to playchess and spends most of his time hanging out at a coffee shop with old pals. But when he reluctantlytakes in Melody, a naïve teenage runaway fromMississippi, he sets in motion a chain of eventswhere the only rule is Whatever Works...

The Innocents [12]

Tuesday 3 August / 8pmDirector Jack ClaytonCast Deborah Kerr, Michael RedgraveUK 1961 / B&W / 1hr 40m“The best ghost movie I’ve ever seen” Pauline KaelJack Clayton’s celebrated adaptation of HenryJames’ The Turn of the Screw, scripted by WilliamArchibald and Truman Capote, with additionalscenes by John Mortimer. A brilliant exercise inpsychological horror, The Innocents tells of animpressionable and repressed governess, MissGiddens, who agrees to tutor two orphanedchildren. On arrival at Bly House, she becomesconvinced the children are possessed by the spiritsof former governess Miss Jessel and her loverQuint, who both met with mysterious deaths. Thesinister atmosphere of The Innocents is carefullycreated – not through shock tactics – but throughits cinematography, soundtrack and decor. It isDeborah Kerr’s career best performance however –struggling to veil her mounting hysteria under acivilised façade – that makes The Innocents suchan intensely unsettling experience, creating one of the greatest of all cinematic terror tales.

Friday 20 & Saturday 21 August / 8pmSunday 22 August / 3pmMonday 23 & Tuesday 24 August / 5pmWednesday 25 August / 8pmThursday 26 August / 5pmDirector Joann SfarCast Eric Elmosnino, Lucy GordonFrance 2010 / Colour / Subtitles / 2hr 10mJoann Sfar writes and directs a unique film of the life of one of France’s most important artists.Growing up in wartime Paris the young LucienGinsburg escapes from both Nazi and self-persecution by embarking on a fantastical career in the arts, resulting in him becoming acelebrated song-writer. But it is only through his relationships and affairs with the likes ofFrance Gall, Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin that he becomes a veritable force in music and Frenchpopular culture. Despite this ensuing success hislife and career remained turbulent until the end,as he provoked the establishment while blazing a musical trail that has continued to inspiregenerations ever since. Eric Elmosnino is terrific as Gainsbourg and the late Lucy Gordon isuncannily reminiscent of the beautiful youngBirkin. Gainsbourg is studded with his fantasticmusic but what marks it out from otherbiographies is that it is a cinematic experiencethat stands on its own merits. If you knownothing of the man himself or remarkably even if you think you do know him and his music you will find this both surprising andilluminating. Gainsbourg would have approved.

At the Theatre Des Champs-Elysées, IgorStravinsky premieres his The Rite Of Spring. Coco Chanel attends the premiere and ismesmerized. But the revolutionary work is toomodern, too radical: the enraged audience boosand jeers. A near riot ensues. Stravinsky isinconsolable. Seven years later, now rich, respected and successful, Coco Chanel meetsStravinsky again - a penniless refugee living inexile in Paris after the Russian Revolution. Theattraction between them is immediate andelectric. Coco offers Stravinsky the use of her villain Garches so that he will be able to work and hemoves in straight away, with his children andconsumptive wife. And so a passionate, intenselove affair between two creative giants begins.
