    BEHIND THE SCENES TOURS 35

Hot! Hot! Hot! Thats what you expect outdoors at the end of the summer and thats also a good description of the offerings at the Phoenix.

Throughout August and September were bringing you great variety in our onscreen entertainment starting with A Promise (p3) - a romantic story set in Germany before WW1. Mood Indigo (p4) has Audrey Tatou going floral in this fable by Michel Gondry, while Lilting (p5) is a small gem with language as its theme. Based on the true story of Joseph Mengeles time living with a family in Argentina, Wakolda (p6) pulls us in. Ari Folman (Waltz With Bashir) directs Robin Wright in The Congress (p7) , a provocative drama about an aging actress. Two Days, One Night (p8) posits Marion Cotillard as a woman who is about to lose her job, unless And in 1984 British miners were losing their jobs in droves. Pride (p11), a raucous feel-good movie follows a group of Gay and Lesbian activists who go to Wales to offer support.

Our Phoenix Nights monthly late-night series offers two dazzlers. August 1st Mark Gatiss takes the stage to introduce Fellinis magical Nights of Cabiria (p25) in beautiful 35mm and on 5th September we join Scalarama, a nation-wide celebration of rare and wacky cinema, to show The Visitor (p27), a psychedelic relic that has to be seen to be believed. Our guest host will be Kim Newman.

Running the gamut from low culture to high, depending on your taste, we present live performances of La Traviata (p29) from Glyndebourne on August 10th and an extraordinary Medea (p29) from the National Theatre on September 4th.

So stay cool and be cool at your favourite cinema.

    See you at the movies!

    Elizabeth Taylor-Mead, Executive Director

  • FROM FRIDAY 1 AUGUST

A Promise 12A1hr 39. France/Belgium 2013. Directed by Patrice Leconte. With Rebecca Hall, Alan Rickman, Richard Madden.

Based on Stefan Zweigs novel Journey Into the Past, A Promise tells the story of Friedrich Zeitz (Richard Madden; Game of Thrones) who goes to serve ageing industrialist Karl Hoffmeister (Alan Rickman; Sense and Sensibility) at his grand estate as a tutor to his son. During his time at the estate Zeitz slowly falls in love with Hoffmeisters wife Lotte (Rebecca Hall; The Awakening) as the pair must negotiate their loyalties and consider the morality of their love. Director Patrice Leconte, known for Monsieur Hire (1989) and The Hairdressers Husband (1990), uses the settings of pre and post WWI Germany to build tension and create a thrilling romantic drama.

    Mood Indigo 12A

    FROM FRIDAY 1 AUGUST

1hr 34. France/Belgium 2013. Directed by Michel Gondry. With Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou, Gad Elmaleh. In French with English subtitles.

Mood Indigo is an ambitious attempt by director Michel Gondry to translate Boris Vians surreal post war novel, Froth on a Daydream, onto the big screen. The film shows the developing relationship between the wealthy and refined Colin (Romain Duris) and his new love Chloe (Audrey Tautou), who is described as being a girl like the Duke Ellington tune - a reference to the films title and Ellingtons similarly unusual jazz song of the same name. Gondrys stays true to the novels unusual tone by expressing the love story within a bizarre and beautiful cinematic landscape which expands the story beyond the Parisian setting and into the minds of its characters.

  • FROM FRIDAY 8 AUGUST

Lilting 151hr 26. UK 2014. Directed by Hong Khaou. With Ben Whishaw, Pei-pei Cheng, Morven Christie, Peter Bowles .

Lilting is a moving drama about Richard (Ben Whishaw, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, Skyfall) trying to connect with the mother (Pei Pei Cheng; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) of his recently deceased boyfriend. The film looks at how age, culture and language can act as significant barriers to meaningful communication, and how powerful human emotions, like grief, can overcome and transcend these blocks. Liltings power ultimately hinges on two utterly engaging performances by Whishaw and Cheng who fully portray the depth of emotion between the two main characters. The film also benefits from a sensitive feature length directorial debut by Hong Khaou who guides us through a complex and delicate drama.

    FROM FRIDAY 8 AUGUST

Wakolda (The German Doctor) 12A1hr 34. Argentina/Spain/Norway/France 2013. Directed by Luca Puenzo. With lex Brendemhl, Diego Peretti, Guillermo Pfening. In Spanish, German, Hebrew, with English subtitles.

Directed by Luca Puenzo and based on her own novel Wakolda (2011), The German Doctor is the provocative true story of Nazi geneticist Josef Mengele (lex Brendemhl) and his life in Argentina following his escape from Auschwitz in 1945. Mengele looks to continue his experiments on Lilith (Florenicia Bado), the daughter of the unsuspecting lodgers with whom he lives. Gradually his sophistication and polite manner unravel as he is revealed to be the truly evil criminal that he really is. Puenzo holds Mengele to a deservedly stark judgement but, in her sophisticated method of storytelling, raises unexpected moral questions too.

  • FROM FRIDAY 15 AUGUST

The Congress 152hrs 03. Israel/Germany/Poland 2013. Directed by Ari Folman. With Robin Wright, Harvey Keitel, Jon Hamm.

The Congress is Ari Folmans completely original cautionary tale of the dangers of mass corporate ownership and the importance of artistic freedom within the arts industry. It follows Robin Wright (played by Wright herself) who is looking to her agent (Harvey Keitel; Moonrise Kingdom, Reservoir Dogs) for a way out of a dead end in her acting career. The omnipotent Miramount studios offer Wright a solution in the form of her being scanned into a virtual world for the studios own use. What follows is a surreal portrait of life as a typecast actor where the only option of escape is to fall into a hallucinatory world of unreality.

    FROM FRIDAY 22 AUGUST

Two Days, One Night 151hr 35. Belgium/Italy/France 2014. Directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne. With Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione, Pili Groyne. In French with English subtitles.

In Two Days, One Night, Sandra (Marion Cotillard; Rust and Bone, La Vie en Rose) must fight to keep her job by convincing her colleagues to give up their recently acquired bonuses. The Dardenne brothers (Rosetta, LEnfant) use this simple story line to communicate with great emotional sincerity the consequences of unemployment and the desperate personal effects of a cold and detached corporate mentality. Two Days, One Night is a moving and much needed exploration of poverty in the modern world as seen through a snapshot made real by the brilliant Marion Cotillard.

The Hundred-Foot Journey PG2hrs 02. USA 2014. Directed by Lasse Hallstrm. With Helen Mirren, Rohan Chand, Charlotte Le Bon, Om Puri.

Having left their native India for provincial France, the Kadam family are keen to make their mark on their new home - and their passion is food. Fighting against the local food traditions, as epitomised by classic restaurant owner Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren; The Queen), Papa (Om Puri; East is East) and his culinary genius son Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) have their work cut out to convince the locals of the epicurian delights of Indian cuisine. The Hundred-Foot Journey follows in the footsteps of the recent foodies favourite Chef in working as a homage to good food, but also benefits from the production values and authority of Steven Spielberg and the on-screen charisma of Helen Mirren.

1hr 37. Denmark/Germany/Sweden 2013. Directed by Mikkel Nrgaard. With Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Fares Fares, Sonja Richter. In Danish, Swedish, Arabic, with English subtitles.

Based on the successful novel by Jussi Adler-Olsen, with a script by Nikolaj Arcel (writer of the original adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and being directed by Borgen director Mikkel Nrgaard, The Keeper of Lost Causes is set to be a quality addition to the growing collection of dark Scandinavian crime dramas. Five years after Danish stateswoman Merete Lynggaard (Sonja Richter; Open Hearts) vanished without a trace from a ferry crossing, detectives Carl Mrck (Nikolaj Lie Kaas; Brothers, The Killing) and Assad (Fares Fares; Zero Dark Thirty) take it upon themselves to reopen the case.

  • Pride 15

    FROM FRIDAY 12 SEPTEMBER

2hrs 00. UK 2014. Directed by Matthew Warchus. With Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, Dominic West, Paddy Considine.

Set at the peak of Margaret Thatchers powers in 1980s Britain, Pride is the story of the oil and water union between the oppressed gay community in London, lead by 20 year old Joe (George MacKay; Defiance), and the similarly oppressed working class miners in Wales. The two groups initial differences find ideological ground in favour of social justice and equality, amidst a socially conservative political backdrop. Paddy Considine (Submarine, Dead Mans Shoes) and Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake) give superb performances as the leaders of the mining community and make Pride both a very enjoyable comedy and an engaging political drama.

    FROM FRIDAY 26 SEPTEMBER

1hr 38. USA 2014. Directed by Woody Allen. With Emma Stone, Colin Firth, Marcia Gay Harden.

The popular magician and illusionist Stanley Crawford (Colin Firth; The Kings Speech) is sent to the beautiful French Riviera in order to decipher the mysterious techniques of soothsayer and spiritualist Sophie (Emma Stone; The Help) who is living there with her mother (Marcia Gay Harden; Into The Wild). Stanley travels to a grand family estate where Sophie has been enlisted to contact the deceased patriarch. In a style typical of Woody Allens more recent films, Magic in the Moonlight makes the backdrop of 1920s Jazz Age France and the stunning Mediterranean setting become additional characters for us to love.

  • FROM FRIDAY 26 SEPTEMBER

1hr 15. UK 2014. Directed by Andre Singer. With Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Bernstein.

Night Will Fall is a documentary about the making of Memory of the Camps, a documentary film masterminded by Alfred Hitchcock and Sidney Bernstein, which looked at the liberation of prisoners from Nazi concentration camps. The original documentary came from footage taken by the British Army Film Unit but was shelved in 1952 as it was deemed by the British and American governments to be unhelpful in repairing relations with Germany, and so it came to be known as The Lost Hitchcock. As an emotionally evocative documentary, Night Will Fall is in good hands with Andre Singer who, having produced The Act of Killing and Into the Abyss, has shown that he knows how to examine the extremes of human behaviour.

Weve enhanced our art gallery walls for your viewing pleasure. Our welcoming Caf/Bar is under new management, offering menus of lovely homemade food and drinks - themed to our feature film runs whenever possible. And last but by no means least, were upgrading our lavatories throughout the building - thrones fit for the royalty we believe you are - coming soon!

In terms of whats on screen and what distinctive events are on offer at the Phoenix, were curating the best from international film festivals, showcasing emerging directors and rarely screened classics, hosting live broadcasts of stellar cultural performances, creating a roster of imaginative film-related attractions, a lot more of our popular Q&As, and initiating Friends Only dates (see p28) and receptions.

Another change long overdue is a revision to the Friends Scheme itself, which goes into effect from October. Its remained static for seven years now and after long deliberation, research, comparisons, focus groups, we feel weve come up with the necessary changes to keep the Phoenix vibrant and growing, realistically enabling us to offer you an experience and atmosphere you cant find anywhere else. We know you value the work we do as a charity on behalf of our community and you value the fact that we remain independent and responsive. Your loyalty and generosity in continuing to support us by upgrading your status as a Phoenix Friend and encouraging others to join truly means the world to us.

  • BEHIND THE SCENES EDUCATION

The Phoenix Cinema is one of the UKs oldest purpose-built, continuously operating cinemas. Beneath the vaulted ceiling which dates back to 1910, the history of film has been shared with millions of audience members. From silent films with live music through two world wars when newsreels were the only source of moving images that captured events overseas; from the clicking reels of 24 frames a second to the digital projection of today, the Phoenix has witnessed it all.

The other unique aspect of the Phoenix Cinema is that since 1985 it has been run by a charitable trust on behalf of the local community. Saved from the wreckers ball by the formation of The Phoenix Cinema Trust, it is a wholly independent single screen cinema showing the latest independent and foreign films and reinvesting its profits in education work and maintaining the historic building.

VISIT THE PHOENIXDid you know we also offer visits? Your class can have exclusive use of the auditorium (including a special screening) participate in amazing workshops and get an exciting peek behind the scenes of our historic building.
