Having taken the decision not to use the university guidance and fly from Luton, the route was to fly from Liverpool to Basel and the Basel to Istanbul. It was in Basel we found the unexpected…

Thinking the change over in Basel was only for a few hours, it was only when booking hotels, that it became apparent that the stop over was in fact 36hrs long. With the hotel sorted, and having arrived in the hotel lobby in Basel, the Vitra design museum was to be the unexpected and one of the lasting legacies of our trip.

Once back in England, discussions amongst the group began to highlight the significance of our stay in Basel. Basel was the unexpected, having focused our attention on Istanbul, and reading the relevant guide books, we had begun to form our preconceptions of the place, unlike Basel to which we had no pre informed opinion and explored through our own personal interests.

It was decided that the unexpected experiences that take place between the destinations, can have a greater impact on the visitor, as they aren’t influenced by preconceived ideas, or informed by the guide book.

The weekend getaway, has become reliant on the travel guide to influence our visits, illustrating the ‘top 10’ attractions to see, and telling us what to expect, and influencing our experience of destinations, making our excursions a process of ticking boxes to allow us to recount our visit and experiences of the place, creating such phrases as…

“When I went to Istanbul” or “I’ve been to Istanbul, you must go and see…”

The presentation, illustrates, the ways in which, our perceptions become informed and influenced by external sources like the guide book, however the significance of the places between the destinations that are stumbled upon unexpectedly, also have a lasting impression as they are often arrived at by personal motivations e.g. architecture. The ‘postcard’ is the record of the journey and is often selected consciously or unconsciously to present the visitors ‘ideal’ of the destination or used to ‘boast’ to the recipient.

Wednesday 26th September

Having sorted my packing, reducing 10 totally unnecessary t-shirts to 5, taken the mad dash to get toiletries, frantically checked for my passport 15 times, I finally begin to relax, handing my bag to the taxi driver, I get into the taxi, fasten my seat belt. Looked at my watch it was 11:15am- great, 15 mins to go till we all meet.

11:30am

“Great” I thought “everyone’s turned up on time” (well 6 of us, group member 7 decided last minute not to come with no real explanation) We head to the check in desks. Winding round and round the barriers, eventually we reach the front.>> Passport Sir/Madam? >> Where are you travelling? >> Have you packed your bags your self?>> Have you left your bags unattended?Ok, Thankyou please head to you boarding gate at 12:40pm.

We headed straight to passport control, again winding round and round the barriers. All belts, money, watches in the tray.>> Step forward please? “Please don’t stop me, please don’t beep”Beeeeeeeeep>> Step aside pleaseSearch over, I collect my bag, re-dress and head through to the departure lounge. We all bought random, unnecessary food items, sat down for all of 15mins and it was time to head to our gate. We all dashed to the gate, queued up to board and dashed for 6 good seats all next to each other. Sat down and belted in we were ready for the next part of the journey to begin.

We all chat aimlessly amongst ourselves: what food should we buy? What book should I read? Ssshhhhh- Lady Jus precedes with the safety procedures as the plane taxis’ to the runway preparing for take off.

16:20pm

“Cabin crew prepare for landing” We all start to put our stuff away and wake up all leaning over each other to peer through the tiny window to get a slight glimpse of our new destination.

We’ve landed Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg airport, France.

Everyone filters out down the plane steps in single file to a very English sky and colder temperatures than we’d set off from. The panic began to set in amongst the group. Had we come prepared for this weather? The simple answer was no. We had a large selection of t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops but as for winter coats and proper walking shoes, well that was something we had to pool together on. We all stand around the conveyer belt waiting in angst for our suitcase praying they are all there. All luggage collected we head to passport control, through the double doors and our trip of Switzerland begins.

As per usual amongst a group on students on tour, the lack of correct currency was evident amongst the group. Some members had no money, nor a bank card to take money out, so how they expected to survive god only knows.

Enough money to get us by and we set off in search of the No 50 Bus, which to our amazement turned out to be free with our hotel reservation. All aboard, the bus pulls away, the fear of the unknown sets in and the lack of confidence in r chosen transport was finally reassured as we turned the corner to see Bannhoff SBB station

We scramble off the bus and enter the lions den of the train station. Following recognisable signs due to an ever increasing language barrier we board the No1 tram. “I’m sure we should be getting the No2” a voice comes from the group. But a kind lady to our left, who acknowledged our confusion, reassured us we were heading in the correct direction. We congratulate ourselves, as if we’d finished the hardest journey of our lives. Counting down the stops we eventually reach our penultimate stop of our day’s journey and once again we scramble of the tram. The hotel is in site, we see the orange brand mark of the Easy Hotel and in less than 5mins we’ll be in the warm with the opportunity to thore out from this unexpected cold weather.

5:30pm

Finally we’re stood in the hotel lobby pressing the buzzer, anxious to just be in our rooms and dump our bags. 3 rooms, 3 room codes and fight up the stairs. Whos having which room? Selected at random we enter our rooms, as to be expected all identical. We all scream in excitement as our architectural geekyness floods out of us. Look at the doors look at the bathroom pods look at this look at that. The cameras are switched on and room photos are taken from every angle to report to those back at home.

Time is of the essence so photography time over we wrap up warm ad set off out down what we think is the main strip. As usual everyone is snapping at similar buildings and land marks. We reach the bridgeover the River Rhein and we stop to capture views down the River. Now starving following a long day of travelling we head off in search of restaurant. Once again the language barrier was becoming somewhat difficult when attempting to read the street side menus.

9:00pm

All fed and watered we headed back in the direction of our hotel, stopping off for a drink on the way. We all pooled our money, bought one drink each and then headed back to the hotel.

10:00pm

Impressed with our navigational skills we returned to the hotel in one peace. As it was still early we all decided to stay up talking about tomorrows plans and playing cards. A 9:30am start was agreed and we headed off to bed.

Thursday 27th September

9:30am

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK��..KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK !!!! “They’re still in bed”

To our amazement we had slept in. We hadn’t changed the time on our phone alarms, to our disappointment we didn’t have one more hour in bed. We quickly jumped up, showered and changed (in our amazing pod bathroom) and down to meet the others waiting in reception.

10:00am

We quickly checked out, left our bags in storage for the day and set off on our day’s adventure.We knew where our first point of call was- ‘Vitra museum’, however it’s exact location and how to get there were a just a few details we were lacking. The main road in Basel seemed the most sensible place to head for. After a lot of running from one tram stop to the next we eventually found a bus stop that would be leaving in 10 minutes time heading in the direction of Vitra. This gave us just enough time to find a bank, get out some money and get back.

“QUICK QUICK, it’s arrived early” We all sprint across the road, a maze of trams, dodging the puddles

10:45am

We all board the No55 bus only to find out to our amazement that Vitra was in Germany and the Swiss Francs we had just got out at the bank where now useless and could not be used. A few seconds of panic took place but luckily one member of the group had Euros which were required for the hotel payment in our next destination. We paid the driver, sat down with our eyes fixed on the stop names on the bus wall, to make sure we didn’t miss our stop.

We had only been travelling about 15mins when we were stopped at what looked like a border. Again thepanic set in- has everyone got their passports?? Luckily the answer was yes and on we preceded withthe journey.

The excitement had set in. None of us had expected to be going to Germany. We couldn’t believe it, in the space of 24hours we had set off from England, landed in France, slept in Switzerland and now we were sightseeing in Germany.

Our eyes where still fixed on the bus stops names, when really all we needed to do was stir out the window. As we approached our stop there as clear as day we could see the work of Gehry. Yes, we thought, we’ve made it. Stepping off the bus, hoods and brollys up, thinking the weather is as bad as England; we headed towards the Vitra Campus. Unfortunately to our disappointment we couldn’t go intothe Vitra design museum by Frank Gehry, due to the preparations taking place for a later display. Westill however paid for our tour around the campus. Our 9 Euros paid, we sat and waited for the tour to begin.

1:00pm

The tour began. Once again the language barrier became some what of an issue, due to the whole tour being spoken in German. However each of us followed the tour in excitement, waiting to enter some of favourite architect’s buildings.

The Fire Station ( Feuerwehrhaus) by Zaha HadidThe first commissioned building in Europe, housing a collection of chairs by Charles Eames. Helen is getting very excited at this point. Her slight obsession in chairs has become apparent and holding her back from entering the building is seemingly quite difficult.

Konferenzpavillion by Tadao Ando The first of Ando’s buildings outside Japan. Jane’s ever increasing screeching of how smooth the concrete is and how she just wants to feel it is becoming rather worrying especially once she asks for her photo hugging the building. (almost as bad as Helen having her photo taken on the toilet in the fire station building)

3:00pm

Now soaked through and all very hungry we headed to the bus stop and waited for our return bus journey back into Basel. At last it arrives, all aboard and we’re off again. This time we were a little more familiar with the surroundings so we could sit back and relax a little more, enjoying the journey.Once back in the centre of Basel we headed straight for food. Being typically English and following our eagerness for food we spotted the first brand name we new and headed straight for the front of the queue- Mc Donalds.

Once fed, we headed to another familiar territory of Starbucks for a coffee. By this time, it was late afternoon and the weather seemed to be getting colder and nothing felt more needed than a latte, ina big mug, sat on a comfy sofa, in the warm.

5:00pm

Once we had thawed out and our clothes had dried out, it was time to continue with of tour of Basel.Luckily the rain had gone off, of course most of us still had something to moan about- sore feet, feeling cold, tired, and hungry again. But we continued on with the journey.

More sites of interest, a lot more photos later, it was time we were heading back to collect our bags from the hotel.

6:30pm

We had got back to the hotel quicker than we had thought so we stopped off at a bar for one final drink before we headed on our return journey to the airport.

Alls bags collected we got back on the No 2 tram in the direction of the station. “this is us”Off the tram and back on the last leg of the journey to the airport- the No 50 bus.

8:25pm

Check in opens, we all cram all our bits and bobs into one bag each, discard of all liquids and head towards the desk for the reiterated tale of check in.>> Passport Sir/Madam?>> Where are you travelling?>> Have you packed your bags your self?>> Have you left your bags unattended?Ok, Thank you please head to you boarding gate at 10:00pm.

Some of us proceeded straight to the gate, some insisted on spending money they didn’t have in duty free.

Time seemed to be taking for ever we just wanted to get on the plain to continue on to our next part of our trip.

10:00pm

“QUICK RUN”23 and 24 years of age we run onto the plain to get the best seat with the most leg room.

Sat down and belted in we were ready for the next part of the journey to begin.

The usual small talk takes place: what food should we buy? What book should I read? Ssshhhhh- The flight attendants precede with the safety procedures as the plane taxis’ to the runway preparing for take off.

We’re up in the air and within seconds I’m asleep.

The second part of the brief asked us to consider the souvenirs that had been collected from our visit, to consider the manufactured and constructed elements, fact vs. fiction.

Exploring the notion of ‘journey’ and ‘travel’, the group recorded micro journeys that had taken place within the whole excursion. The drawings, explored the ideas of tourism as a process, the notion of time, gaining and losing time, by moving through time zones and time spent sat in the transit lounge, waiting in anticipation and establishing preconceptions about the place.

The project moved from looking at the ‘postcard’ as the physical manifestation of the visit, to the artificial constructed reality of our visit. Memories become influenced by connections to familiar everyday situations, places that offer comfort, combining the experiences with emotive responses that grow to be woven together. The observer links these experiences to recognisable settings to enable them to explore and consume tourism and the world by taking them on a continuous journey.

The combination of the physical and the artificial began to mould the project, to explore the ideas of thresholds, allowing the participant to un-expectedly, meet the unfamiliar and encourage them to remain in an ephemeral state and ultimately keep travelling.

03 Non- Site Specific Object

Discussions amongst the group and with the tutors, moved the project to consider the idea of the non-place, thus the airplane, a pressurized pre-packaged environment became the destination itself and the focus for the scheme.

The nature of bringing the airplane into the heart of the city centre, looked to reduce the time spent waiting in the transit lounge, disconnected from the place/ setting it was anchored too. The time spent building up to embarking on a journey in the plane together with, its new docking point, made the plane the destination, questioning the need to travel, when information could be brought to the place, allowing the individuals percep-tions of the place to be informed by a secondary source just like the guide book.

The plane was to be incubated within the centre of the city, allowing the plane to consume information about the place it is tethered too, and recharge before moving onto the next destination, once docked in a place the plane distributes information from its travels by depositing fragments of previous journeys within the existing urban fabric of the place.

The presentation developed earlier ideas of exploring the threshold, by collecting details of various connections between the plane itself and the docking station to which the plane was docked, before the next stage of its journey could be undertaken.

Our project began to shape its focus around the journey itself and the notion ‘to travel’, by encountering and exploring the unexpected; do you ever really reach your destination? Is it now possible to remain in a constant transient state with experiences controlled by the environment of the transit lounge?

The ultimate transit lounge, the airport, has become a packaged environ-ment, providing many familiar comforts to the momentary occupant- airports themselves have become secondary destinations along with the plane, the promise of duty free, restaurants, bars and cafes, spaces to work, ultimately spaces to temporarily inhabit. With the intention to make time sat waiting in transit appear as if it isn’t being lost, to distract from the banality of the predictable airport scenario.

Changing this scenario, looks at reconstructing the airport/ terminus to benefit the existing city fabric, creating a new layer, with the intention of hovering unobtrusively, but in reality encroaching on established boundar-ies and territories. The terminus offers a connection between the layers, unlocking the city’s amenities to create a 24hr city culture, benefiting both the momentary and permanent occupants.

The form of the terminus uses the tubular nature of the plane, to remove the expansive idolatry process of the airport and compressing the funct-ions into a vertical stack, reassigning the ritual nature of moving through the airport from the process to moving through the undiscovered vertical city layers.

The actual consequences of this proposal are largely disruptive to the established city life, challenging everyday situations, such as working and living patterns. This initial disruption is undoubtedly an inconvenience which will soon become the everyday situation, ultimately leading to acceptance and integration.

stations, airports and interchanges allowing people to remain in const-ant state of transit, removing the foreign and providing the familiar to meet the needs of the traveller. travel times are made to appear reduced by bringing all the comforts of the city to them, removing local-ity for global demand.

by flying a plane into the city centre a juxtaposition of events occurs, the experiences created are a new definition of journey. encroaching on territories and over stepping boun-daries affects both place and traveller in positive and negative ways. time is altered between vehi-cle and place, allowing for an alteration to existing behaviour forcing the visitor to look and look again, challenging established norms of the transit lounge.

experience:

arrival into the city appears as a layer, sat overthe exisiting city fabric, to appear unintrusive, challenging territoires and boundaries by bringing the plane closer to people removing the mythical nature of the flying steel bird.

the supposed intergration of the plane with the city fabric, creates a displaced atmosphere, everyday situatons altered by otherwise unconsidered airport functions. the idea that noise of children playing is drowned out by the droan of the plane no longer becomes unusual.

the ‘airport’ core allows people to move up through the city and out to world, rotated views of parts of the city that previously remained undiscovered, now offer the unexpected, the juxtaposition of the unexplored everyday against travel.

massing diagram:

the general massing of the ‘airport’ core takes inspiration from twisting cylinders and with the form appearing like layers peeling off the main functional tube to allow additional space into the plan.

using the tubular form of the plane, allows the core to penetrate the exisitng city fabric enabling people/ travellers to move through the layers of the vertical city and glimpse unexpected views that would have previously remained unexplored.

the core is designed to remove the pre packaged environment of the established norm of the airport, removing the familiar andencouraging the foreign to be explored by delivering the traveller direct to the locality, thus the plane/airport becomes less of a destination and allows the traveller to get lost in their own emotional experience of the city
