Home News Agency Agents under the spotlight enlightened venues at MIA Agents Day

Category: Agency & Association Created on Tuesday, 26 May 2015 13:30

As part of the association’s 25th Anniversary celebrations, the mia held its first Agents Day at Center Parcs Woburn Forest on Thursday 21st May.

The day brought together some of the UK’s top booking agents including, ArrangeMy Group, Hospitality Guaranteed, Ellis Salsby, Capita Travel and Events,

Eventful Limited, Banks Sadler, Inntel, tobook Ltd. and Bien Venue Ltd.

The day commenced with an ‘Agents in the Spotlight’ session, where Petra Clayton, managing director of Custard Communications – the PR agency for the mia, put agents

on the spot with questions collected from venues prior to the event. Despite the pressure of a mastermind style set up, the agent’s messages were loud and clear, reiterating

the importance of transparency of costs, building relationships, investing in people and encouraging venues to promote the substance behind accreditation.

After a three-course lunch, each agent led a team to take part in ‘Mission International’ across the stunning village at Center Parcs, providing delegates with an opportunity to

see the range of activities available and take part in problem solving activities.

During the day delegates were asked to embrace the concept of ‘stop and think’ which is the theme for this year’s mia conference by staging a pose for the camera to sum

up ‘stop and think’. Jane Longhurst, chief executive, mia judged the winning team which was led by Sian Sayward and Jenna Lee from Inntel.

“The mia is keen to champion ‘stop and think’ beyond the conference. We are encouraging venues, agents, suppliers and the industry as a whole to really stop and think

about their business. The Agents Day was just one initiative to bring people together who normally don’t get the opportunity to ask candid questions and to give people the

time and space to think in a different environment. We came away with lots of answers which will impact the way venues think about their approach to agents and we have

already received an overwhelming response encouraging us to host more events throughout the year.”

Many of the teams took to social media to share their experiences and Glen Mainwaring from the Barbican was crowned king of the tweeters with his regular updates and

sharing throughout the event.

The day concluded with a celebratory drinks reception where the mia will presented the award to the winning team, led by Chris Nagle from tobook Ltd. who received two

tickets to the mia conference taking place on 12th June at BMA House.

Home News Venues & Events London climbs higher in world’s business tourism rankings

Category: Venues & Events Created on Monday, 11 May 2015 16:20

Figures released today by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) confirm that London is once again climbing the world rankings as

one of the most popular destinations for international conventions and conferences.

The capital has welcomed a huge number of global business events which have elevated the city’s status up to 6th place in 2014, one up from 7th place in

2013. The annual ICCA results show that the capital is once again ahead of other major cities such as Singapore, Amsterdam, Beijing, Hong Kong, Chicago

and Sydney.

Congress highlights from 2014 include the International Liver Congress™ run by the European Association for the Study of the Liver, which saw over 10,000 join their event

in London, representing their highest ever attendance, the European Society of Pathology’s congress which enjoyed a 23 per cent increase in attendance compared to 2013

and the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology’s annual congress which hosted 7,000 delegates in the city. London also welcomed

the largest ever gathering of eye specialists with events including ESCRS, EURETINA and EuCornea, while Wikipedia’s annual conference, Wikimania, held at the Barbican

saw over 2,000 delegates take part.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Gordon Innes, CEO London & Partners said: “London is a world-class destination for meetings and events and these results are a

great boost for the capital’s associations industry, which is a crucial driver of investment into the city, as well as supporting and creating jobs across the capital.

“London's connectivity and ease of access combined with its rich culture and heritage makes the city an exciting proposition for meeting organisers. London also continues

to reap the rewards of hosting the 2012 Olympics, which enhanced the city’s infrastructure and also attracted a new selection of landmark hotels and inspirational event

spaces.”

2015 will be ExCeL London’s best ever year for congresses, with more ICCA rated events than ever before. This includes the European Society of Cardiology, which will be

coming to London this summer. The ESC Congress is the largest association meeting held in Europe, with around 35,000 medical professionals expected in the capital for

the 5 day event from 29 August – 2 September 2015.

Looking forward to 2016 and beyond, the European Respiratory Society and Euroanaesthesia have both chosen to host their association events in London next year while

EULAR (The European League Against Rheumatism) will return to ExCeL London following a successful event in 2011. The Alzheimer’s Association will also host its annual

conference in the capital for the first time in 2017.

London & Partners’ Associations team will be at IMEX Frankfurt on stand F400 from Tuesday 19 – Thursday 21 May 2015.
