Obituaries Services for Dr. Leo Green will be held Friday in Binkley'Chapel
Or. J. Loa Groeq, distinguished professor emeritus of Old Testament Interpretation at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, died Tuesday at the age of 81. Dr. Green. one of the three original faculty members at Southeastern, retired from the classroom in 1974.

He came to the seminary after having held pastorates at First Baptist Church, Pensacola, Fla., and First Baptist Church in Gainesville, Fla. Dr. Green held both a master of theology and Ph.D. degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He taught at Sou~ern from 1937 to 1948. Dr. J. Leo Green

DUNN - Dr. James Leo Green Sr., an Old Testament scholar and founding member of the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, died Tuesday after a long illness. He was 81.

became a full professor at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. by the age of 24, said his son Richard Green. "Many of his students were his own age."
Mter 11 years on the faculty of Southern, Dr. Green served as pastor of First Baptist Church in Pensacola, Fla., and First Baptist Church in Gainesville, Fla., before moving to Wake Forest.
Dr. Green's tenure at the seminary included several trips to Europe, where he studied and conducted research in the London Museum, at Oxford and Cambridge universities and the University of Zurich.
Among Dr. Green's publications are a volume of the Broadman Commentary on the Book of Jeremiah, pu~lished in 19'71, and a
book on the prophet Isaiah titled "God Reigns."
"He didn't just leave the Old Testament books in the long ago," Dr. Bland said. "He had a way of relating their message to contemporary 2Oth-century life."
The death of Dr. Green's wife, Ruth, in 1987 and the onset of Parkinson's disease took a toll on Dr. Green, his son said.
Dr. Green , is survived. by two sons, Dr. James L. Green Jr. of Alexandria, Va., and J. Richard I Green of Dunn; asister, Blanche Baker; two brothers, Raymond Green and Roy Green ; 11 grandchildren and one grea~-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today in the Binkley Chapel at Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest. Burial in Southeastern Seminary Cemetery.

He is professor of Old Testament Interpretation a t Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at Wake Forest.
Dr. Green is a native of Mississippi. He graduated from Mississippi College and received his theological training at Southeastern Seminary at Louisville. Ky. where he received his master of theology and his doctor of philosophy drgree.
For 11 years he taught Hebrew and Old Testament at Southern Seminary. He also served as pastor of the First Baptist Churches of Pensacola and Gainesville, F1orida. He has served in his present position since 1951 when he became one of the founders of Southeastern Seminary. He has done post doctoral at UNC, Princeton, Oxford, London, and cambridge Universities and has contributed numerous artices for Southern Baptist publications. He has traveled extensively throughout the world and has preached in a number of different countries.
Dr. Green is widely known as not only a great teacher but as an evangelist and interim pastor. He Will follow the Rev. George Simmons who retired Dec. 31 and will serve until a new pastor is secured.
