The Baptism of the Lord January 13, 2019

This Sunday we celebrate the baptism of Jesus by John in the Jordan River. The imagery is familiar; John says he is not worthy to loosen the thongs of Jesus’ sandals, but Jesus wills that John should baptize him. Soon

thereafter the skies open and we hear the father’s voice proclaim, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:22). And the Holy Spirit descends on Jesus in the form of a dove.

As we celebrate Christ’s baptism we should also celebrate our own. At baptism, we were all reborn as children

of God, we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church, and made sharers in the mission of the Church, (CCC 1213). We celebrate the reality that we have become part of Christ himself, and share in the

mission of the Church, which is Christ’s own mission. Furthermore, being reborn as God’s own children we also share in the message Jesus himself heard at his own baptism, that we are each beloved children of God in

whom the Father is well pleased. But what does it mean to share in the mission of the Church. Our reading from the Isaiah this Sunday can point

us in the right direction when it comes to this mission: “Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its produce, Who gives breath to its people and spirit to those who walk on it: I, the LORD, have called you for justice, I have grasped you by the hand; I formed you, and set you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness.”

Part of our mission as Jesus’ disciples is to stand for justice, to be God’s light to all nations, to give sight to those who do not see, and to free those living in darkness. Part of Jesus’ mission was to do these things mentioned above. Today as we remember his baptism and our own, we are invited to also remember what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.

Baptism Baptisms are a communal Sacrament held on the 4th Sunday of each month after the 11:00am Mass. Deacon John Fanelle performs all of the baptisms. Parents are required to be formally registered as parishioners, and be participating members of our community for three months. Attending Mass does not make you registered. You must have completed the registration form. If this is the first child, both parents are required to attend the Baptismal Class. Baptismal classes are held on the first Sunday of each month. Godparents are encouraged to attend the baptismal class, either at our parish or their own parish. For more information, or to schedule a Baptism and/or register for the Baptismal Class, please visit https://sttheresecarmel.org/baptism/. Marriage

All couples wishing to be married at St. Thérèse of Carmel must be formally registered, active and participating members of our parish community for one year before setting a date. Couples are asked to allow six to nine months to complete the marriage preparation program. Please contact the parish office at (858) 481-3232 or email [email protected] to make arrangements.

RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults RCIA is the process by which the unbaptized are received into the Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. RCIA is also appropriate for Christians from other denominations who seek initiation into the Catholic tradition and for Baptized Catholics who need to finish their sacraments of initiation.
