Bangor University internationalstudents launch their first app...

Two international students from Bangor University are busy getting ready forthe launch of their long-term reminder app for mobile devices.Kalaivani, 32, and her husband Karthikesan, both from Singapore, are undergraduate international students at the Bangor Business School and theCollege of Applied Science at Bangor University. They have been developingtheir own app, Key It In, over the last four months and have been gearing upfor the launch which took place on March 15th.

About the App, Kala said: “It is meant to address everybody in general. It isthe concept of allowing people to store information about the location ofvaluable items which has been safely kept away. It eliminates the issue ofhaving misplaced/forgotten the item after a prolonged period of time. Itcould be a TV manual guide you kept away for future reference or that valuable will and legal documents.

“Having recently moved to Bangor, we had a lot of paper work that needed tobe kept safe and we sometimes had difficulty remembering where we hadkept them so we decided to develop an App that lets you note where youkeep your important items.

“It is a simple and easy to use concept with vibrant graphics. We found outabout support that was available during an Entrepreneurship modules, therewas a guest speaker who spoke about Venture Wales. That led us to lookingup their website and discovering that Bangor University had a B enterprisingdepartment. I met with Lowri and was referred to Chris Walker who gave mean idea of what kind the help that was available for starting your own business.”

Kala’s husband, Karthik, already had prior knowledge and interest in the ITindustry and studying in Bangor Universities School of Applied Science gavehim an insight on how to go about programming and developing Apps. They now have their own company, Kastle, and hope to develop more apps inthe future.

Kala came to Bangor after completing two years of her degree programmeat MDIS, in affiliation with Bangor University, in Singapore.

Research News...

Researchers at Bangor and Aberystwyth have developed atechnique where the sugar issqueezed out of ryegrass and theleftovers are moulded into shape.

Packaging trays for soft fruits suchas pears and plums, as as well ascosmetic products, can be createdusing the moulding technology.

The project is funded with £600,000of Welsh government money. It is hoped that one of the UK’s mainsupermarket chains Waitrose, apartner to the project, will be able touse the techniques to create moresustainable packaging for its products.

Similar packaging products to theones being developed have beenmade previously using wood, butexperts at Bangor University claimthis exact method using grass hasnever been done before.

Robert Elias, commercial managerof Bangor's BioComposites Centre, said the grass containers developedwere "higher quality, more resistantto damage and easily compostedafter use".

The researchers said the projecthighlighted the need to support therural economy and said that as wellas finding a new use for excessgrass cuttings the plans could min-imise land wastage. Quentin Clark, head of sustainability at Waitrosesaid: "Moving to easily recycledfibre-based packaging for foods, where this can show positive envi-ronmental benefit, is somethingwe're keen to develop".
