The Bobo Doll ExperimentTested how children learn and imitate aggressive behavior (Bandura, Ross & Ross,1961)Genetic predisposition & abusive homes combined with the media increases violent criminal behavior (Heath, Kruttschnitt,and Ward, 1986)Biggest factors contributing to media violence: desensitization and limited consequences (Dale, L.D., DiLoreto, J.D., Couto, M.C., Klein, J.K., Borto, J.B., McDonald, K.M., Pidano, A.P., McEvoy, K.M. & Olson, H.O., 2013)

36 boys and 36 girls Total 72 -Stanford University Nursery School - 3 to 6 years oldChildren pre-tested for aggressiveness by observation. 5-point rating scale rated: physical, verbal, toward inanimate objects, aggressive inhibition. Matched pairs design - children matched to everyday aggression.24 children watch male or female model behaving aggressively toward Bobo doll. Verbal "Pow, Boom. Another 24 children had non-aggressive model played in a quiet and subdued manner for 10 minutes - ignored Bobo Dollnon-aggressive toys:tea set, crayons, three bears, plastic farm animals. aggressive toys: mallet and peg board, dart guns, 3 foot Bobo doll.

ResultsChildren that viewed the aggressive models were more aggressiveGirls who viewed male models - more physical Girls who viewed a female model - more verbalBoys were more physically aggressive Children are more likely to model their behavior after nurturant models vs. threatening models(Bandura, Ross & Ross, 1961; Bandura & Bussey, 1999)

Problems: measures were taking immediately, there was no measurement of long term effects; done in lab -> less validity in real environments; could be seen as unethical to expose children to violencePositives: There was a measurement of all types of situations;
