Modern snowmobile tracks are highly engineered products taking in account manyproperties like weight, strength, oatation, traction, cost, longevity, and even aerodynamics.

THE RIGHT TRACK FOR THE BEST RIDEThe key to selecting the best track or the way you ride is to careully consider where andhow you ride. What perormance aspects do you preer or want to improve: top speed,better acceleration or shorter distance? What kind o handling are you looking or: nailed tothe trail or loose so you can slide the tail o the sled?

There are three basic types o non-competitive riding:

Trail Riding

Trail riding is characterized by a majority o miles on groomed snow trails or on ungroomed trails that experienceenough use to present a generally compacted trail surace most or all o the time, and on bare or lightly coveredice that presents special traction challenges.

Cross-Country Riding

Cross-Country Riding is characterized by a majority o miles in ditchlines, on lesser used and completelyungroomed trails, in o-trail ree riding situations, and boondocking in areas with no trails. All o these situationsrequire dealing with deeper, looser snow than on compacted trail suraces.

Mountain Riding

Mountain Riding is characterized by high altitudes, steep slopes, and deep snow pack with highly variabletop conditions but sot, loose accumulation underneath. These conditions require tracks with light weight andmaximum traction.

SIZE IT UPThere are our critical dimensions to a snowmobile track: length, width, drive pitch, andlug height. You need to know all o them or your sled to select the correct replacementtrack to revive your ride.

LUGHEIGHT,THEKEYTOPERFORMANCEUnderstanding the trade-os o lug design, particularly lug height, is key to selectingthe correct track to revive your ride. A lug is an oar that pushes on the snow to movethe machine orward, and is also oten used to control sideways movement and overallstability. More aggressive tall lugs provide a better bite in sot or loose snow or betteracceleration and braking, but the added weight and aerodynamic losses can degradetop speed.Length

The length is the inside circumerence o the track, and is calculated as the drive pitch (see below)times the number o track segments. It must be correct to the nearest inch or proper ft withoutadditional modifcations to the skid rame. (Atermarket parts are available or these modifcations

i needed.) In general, shorter tracks provide better handling while longer tracks provide better ridequality and better oatation.

Width

Maximum track width is governed by the width o the tunnel. You can choose a replacement track thatis slightly narrower, like a 15-inch track in place o a 16-inch track, but not necessarily the other wayaround. A narrower track will reduce weight or better acceleration and top speed, while a wider trackwill provide better oatation in sot, deep snow.

Drive Pitch

The pitch is the drive cog center distance around the circumerence o the cogs on the drive axle.It must match the existing track or the drive cogs must be changed. The most common pitch is2.52-inches because it provides good all-around perormance, but many new sleds use a 2.86-inchpitch because the weight reduction improves perormance. A 3.0-inch pitch is also common onmountain sleds or additional weight reduction. Some other drive pitches are also ound on oldermodels.

Lug Height

In basic terms, more lug height equals better traction. Even one quarter o an inch in extra height canmake a substantial dierence in acceleration and braking. And newer lug designs can improve side biteand reduce fshtailing or better stability. Check or adequate clearance beore going to a taller lug track.
