PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Dear Fellow Manila Rotarians,

Our Guest of Honor and Speaker last Thursday, Dr. Mahar Mangahas, Social

Weather Stations (SWS) President, gave us a thorough understanding of how each and

every one of us should treat and interpret an election survey. It was, indeed, a very

enlightening talk and kept Manila Rotarians and our guests engaged in a very informative

open forum which followed the talk.

On news within our Club, I am sad to report on the untimely passing of Rtn. Ceferino “Pering” L. Benedicto, Honorary

Consul General of Albania and Chairman and CEO of Benedicto Steel Corporation, who joined our Club in 1995. “Pering”, as he

is fondly called by fellow Manila Rotarians, joined his Creator last 24 January 2016 at the age of 80. We will be paying our last

respects to one of our most respected members on Thursday, 28 January 2016, at 3:30 pm at the Capilla del Señor and Capilla

dela Virgen of the Santuario de San Antonio, Forbes Park, Makati City, where we will present his Rotary name badge to his

widow, Mrs. Julie Tan-Benedicto, and his son, fellow Manila Rotarian Noy Benedicto. I invite all Manila Rotarians to join us in

paying our last respects to a fellow Manila Rotarian. As for the DISCON 2016 Committee, we continue to meet on a weekly

basis for updates on the arrangements, accommodations, venue, booths, and souvenir program. As indicated earlier, our Club,

being the club of the current District Governor, is, by tradition, given the responsibility to host the DISCON this year. I

encourage each and every Manila Rotarian to help in any way to enable us to meet the target attendance and revenue for the

event. Your support for our DG Obet Pagdanganan will be most appreciated.

On news from around the District, together with my fellow World Class Presidents, I just returned from a very successful District

3810 Mid-Year Review Meeting, which was held from 22-24 January 2016 in Baguio City. During this event, I reported on the

accomplishments of our Club during the first semester of Rotary Year 2015-2016 before our District Officers (which included our

very own DG/PP Obet Pagdanganan, DGND/CoS Rudy Bediones, and DCC/AS Alvin Lacambacal). I also took the opportunity

to invite the different clubs in our District to send their representatives to attend the DISCON in 2016 and to place their ads in our

2016 DISCON Souvenir Program.

Today, we shall have as our Guest of Honor and Speaker, Public-Private Partnership Center of the Philippines

Executive Director Cosette V. Canilao, who will share with us her experience and insights on public-private partnership (“PPP”)

projects that were planned for, rolled out, and/or implemented during the current administration of President Benigno S. Aquino

III. Such PPP projects are expected to eventually lead to a better Philippine economy.

Please continue to actively participate in all of our Club’s activities, projects, and programs.

Mabuhay ang Rotary Club of Manila! The First in Asia!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

All About Blonds... A blond has become dreadfully overweight. She goes to the doctor and he decides to put her on a diet. “I want you to eat normally for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for 2 weeks. Next time I see you, you’ll probably be 5 pounds lighter.” The blonde returns after 2 weeks, but upon weighing her it turns out she lost 20 pounds. “That’s amazing!” Said the doctor, “and you followed my instructions?” The blond nodds, tiredly. “I’ll tell you, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day.” “From hunger, you mean?” asked her doctor. “No, silly, from the skipping!” * * * * * A new blonde stewardess began her first day. The route they were flying required that they make a stop in another city for the night. Soon after their arrival the captain showed all the flight attendants to their rooms. The next morning the pilot was preparing everyone to leave, and he noticed his new flight attendant was missing. He knew which room she was in at the hotel and called her up, as he was wondering what happened to her. She answered the phone, sobbing. “I can’t get out of my room!” “You can’t get out of your room?” the captain asked, “Why not?” The stewardess replied, “There are only three doors in here,” she cried, “one is the bathroom, one is the closet, and one has a sign on it that says, ‘Do Not Disturb’!” * * * * * In a cafe, a blonde request to a server for its coffee sugar: But madam, I have already given you five.

Page 25: balita - The Rotary Club of Manilarcmanila.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/JANUARY-28-2016-BALITA1.pdfbalita of Rotary Club of Manila No. 3633, January 28, 2016 GUEST OF HONOR AND SPEAKER

25

Yes I know, but they all melted! * * * * * A doctor asks one of his patients blondes: Why do you put insecticide in your shoes? Because I have ants in my feet! * * * * * Why do blondes use toothpaste to wash sweaters? Because they were told that toothpaste wool refreshes and strengthens Meshes. * * * * * This is the blonde who goes to see his doctor and told him, “I think I have a mental diarrhea”. The doctor said: But how do you explain that and the blonde replied?: “Whenever I have an idea, this is crap.” * * * * * A manager walks by his blonde secretary’s desk when he notices she is crying her eyes out. Concerned for her well being, he asked her gently: “What’s the matter?” To which the blonde replies, “Early this morning I got a phone call saying that my aunt had passed away.” The boss, feeling very sorry for her, suggests to the young girl. “Why don’t you take a day, go home and rest. We’re not very busy, so just take this time for yourself. The blonde very calmly replies “No, I’d be better off here. It’s good to keep my mind off it and I have the best chance of do ing that here.” The boss agrees and allows the blonde to work as usual. “If you need anything just let me know.” Well, a few hours pass and the boss decides to check on the blonde. He looks out over his office and sees the blonde crying hysterically. He rushes out to her asking, “What’s so bad now? Are you gonna be okay?” “No”, exclaims the blonde, “*I just received a horrible call from my sister and she said that her aunt died too!” * * * * * Blonde Mortician A man who just died is delivered to a local mortuary wearing an expensive, expertly tailored black suit. The female blonde mortician asks the deceased’s wife how she would like the body dressed. She points out that the man does look good in the black suit he is already wearing. The widow, however, says that she always thought her husband looked best in blue, and that she wants him in a blue suit. She gives the blonde mortician a blank check and says, ‘I don’t care what it costs, but please have my husband in a blue suit for viewing.’ ‘There’s no charge,’ she says.

‘No, really, I must compensate you for the cost of that exquisite blue suit!’ she says. ‘Honestly, ma’am,’ the blonde says, ‘it cost nothing. You see, a deceased gentleman of about your husband’s size was brought in shortly after you left yesterday, and he was wearing an attractive blue suit. I asked his wife is she minded him going to his grave wearing a black suit instead, and she said it made no difference as long as he looked nice. So I just switched the heads.’ * * * * *

PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION AND CHILD CARE

ADULT IMMUNIZATION SCHEDULE, Part 1

Elias D. Adamos, M.D.

There are two types of adult immunization: Active and Passive. The first type refers to immunization with the use of inactivated virus or bacteria that causes the disease in which the vaccine in used for, in order for the body to stimulate its natural defenses or immune system to produce a shield or protection against the virus or bacteria. The other type of immunization utilizes the use of immune globulins or laboratory prepared protective agents in order for the body to have transient or temporary protection against infection. The following are active immunizations for adults. Influenza “anti-flu” vaccine Persons who are at least 6 months old, pregnant women, non-pregnant adults without high-risk medical conditions, can receive anti-flu or vaccine against influenza. Influenza vaccine schedule is once a year. You should not get the anti-flu shot if you have known allergy to the same. Precautions in giving the vaccine should be observed in persons with moderate or severe acute illness. Avoid antiviral medicines 24 hours before the vaccine and for 14 days after its administration. Tetanus, diphtheria (Td) booster/Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) booster Adults who were not immunized for DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) during their childhood should receive Tdap. All others should receive Td every 10 years. Don’t get the shot if you have known allergy to the vaccine. Adults who are suffering from epilepsy, seizures, and neurologic problems should be vaccinated with precaution. Varicella “chickenpox” vaccine This vaccine is given at 2 doses, 4 to 8 weeks apart. Chickenpox vaccine is very important for healthcare workers, military personnel, non-pregnant women of childbearing age, employees in childcare institutions, and international travelers. A person with allergy to the vaccine should not get it. Don’t take any antiviral medicine 24 hours before the administration of the vaccine. Once you get the vaccine, avoid antiviral medicines for at least 14 days because they might affect its efficacy. Human papillomavirus “venereal warts” vaccine (HPV) Administer the vaccine to females who are 11 to 12 years old. Women at age 13 up to 26 who were not previously vaccinated should have the shots. Men who are 11 to 12 years old should receive the vaccine. If not previously vaccinated, males who are 13 up to 21 years of age should receive it. The vaccine is give on 3 separate doses. The second and third doses are given at 2 and 6 months apart from the first dose. Precautions to the vaccine should be observed in administration to pregnant women and to those who have acute illness. Known allergy to the vaccine is a contraindication for the shots.
