PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Last week, Sen. Leila de Lima gave us an overview of the issues hurled against

her and her thoughts on the drug menace as well as the extra-judicial killings as she gamely celebrated her birthday in a belated manner with the World Famous Music Committee serenading her.

As for updates within our club, I wish to congratulate the next leaders of our club for Ry 2017-2018 after our just concluded elections last week, namely, Jimmie Policarpio, President, Babe Romualdez and Chito Zaldarriaga as Vice Presidents, and as Directors, Caloy Reyes, Bobby Joseph, Lance Masters, Issam Eldebs and Susing Pineda. Per our By-Laws, for that year I automatically become a member of the Board as Immediate Past President. On a different note, I likewise with to congratulate DCoS/SDG/Dir. Albert Alday and Rtn. Dong Benedicto, Chair and Co-Chair, respectively, for our club’s successful participation in the ALAY LAKAD 2016 with the theme, ALAY LAKAD –MAY PAGASA

ANG KABATAAN last September 4, 2016. This committee is chaired by DCoS/SDG/Dir. Albert Alday and co-chaired by Rtn. Dong Benedicto where nine (9) of us, namely, DCoS/SDG/Dir. Albert Alday, Rtn. Dong Benedicto who was there with his wife, CoS/PP Cesar Ubaldo, SAA Lance Masters, PD Oca del Rosario, IPP Ebot Tan, PP Francis Juico, Alay Lakad Foundation President SDG/IPAG/PP Frank Evaristo and I braved an early morning rise to gather at the Planetarium and walk for a cause. After which, the Manila Rotarians ascended the stage for photo opportunities and to recognize our vital role in the Alay Lakad where our group regained our rightful place in the parade just behind the District Officers. Our deepest gratitude likewise to the ALAY LAKAD Committee for providing free shirts for the walkers, the Rotaract Club of Manila and the Rotaract Club of De La Salle University Manila who joined us in the walk and also to our every generous Rtn. Rickie Yap for graciously hosting a sumptuous breakfast which benefitted both Manila Rotarians and Rotaractors alike. Last September 6, 2016, DGN Rudy Bediones, PE Jimmie Policarpio, Rtn. Hermie Esguerra and I met in Rockwell to discuss plans for the Centennial Celebration. Before I forget, I wish a ton of thanks to DCoS/SDG/Dir. Albert Alday, the Editor-In-Chief of the GML for featuring our Solar Panel Project at the Hospicio de San Jose on one entire center spread of the August issue of the GML. This definitely is the way to make some noise towards our centennial celebration.

Updates from around the district include the attendance of IPDG/PP Obet Pagdanganan, DGN/IPCoS/PP Rudy

Bediones and CoS/IPSDG/PP Cesar Ubaldo at the 30th Induction and 31st Handover Ceremonies of the Rotary Club of Rosario last September 1, 2016 at the Island Cove Hotel and Leisure Park in Cavite where my classmate, ASP Julita de Jesus was inducted as President for RY 2016-2017. The following day, September 2, 2016, CoS/IPSDG/PP Cesar Ubaldo was part of the

Governor’s Visit to the Rotary Club of Dasmariñas which was followed by its 26th Induction Ceremonies at the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Dasmariñas, Cavite where IPDG/PP Obet Pagdanganan and DGN/IPCoS/PP Rudy Bediones were likewise present and where my classmate, ASP Ed Toribio was inducted as President for RY 2016-2017. The following day, September 3, 2016, SDG/IPAG/PP Frank Evaristo, turned over the mantle of responsibility as Chairman of the Best Class Presidents at ceremonies held at the Admiral Baysuites in Manila where DGN/IPCoS/PP Rudy Bediones was likewise present. The next day, September 4, 2016, our club joined the Alay Lakad 2016. The following day, September 5, 2016, CoS/IPSDG/PP Cesar Ubaldo, DCoS/SDG/Dir. Albert Alday and I attended the Area Meeting of the district for the month of September at the Aristocrat Restaurant in Manila while DGN/IPCoS/PP Rudy Bediones and PDG Vince Carlos attended the Dinner in honor of Rotary International President-Elect Ian and Lady PDG Juliet Risely tendered by the Philippine College of Rotary Governors at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in Pasay City. The next day, September 6, 2016, CoS/IPSDG/PP Cesar Ubaldo and DCoS/SDG/Dir. Albert Alday attended the Governor’s Visit of the Rotary Club of Hiyas ng Maynila at the Bayview Park Hotel in Manila.

Today is insurance day as we welcome Hon. Emmanuel Dooc, Insurance Commissioner, to our club, Asia’s First Rotary Club as he speaks on the Future of Insurance in this administration. I look forward to your cooperation as we endeavor to make our stars shine this Rotary Year 2016-2017 through meaningful projects and fellowships that will strengthen the bonds of Asia’s First Rotary Club.

Yes, Mabuhay Congratulations to SDG/PP Frank Evaristo, as President of Alay Lakad Foundation,

Inc. (ALFI) on another ± 1,000,000 “Walk for Out of School Youth” on the 44th year anniversary of this noble NFP. The President of the Philippines serves as the honorary chairman of the foundation, reminding us all of its importance. Approximately 500,000 participants assembled at 5:00 a.m. and started walking by Quirino Grandstand at 5:30! An unknown number, but estimated additional 300,000, were participating in parallel walks in their communities nation-wide. These traditional walks are organized by Alay Lakad Foundation, Inc., in cooperation with different government agencies, civic and non-governmental organizations, to support and finance ALFI’s socioeconomic projects for the country’s out-of-school youth (aged 17 to 24 drop-outs). The lead sponsors are the Armed Forces of the Philippines, who made the largest contribution of ± 280,000, Federation of Chinese Chamber of Commerce led by Mr. Gerry Ng, Rotary District 3810, Philippines Lions Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs, JCI’s, Philippine Red Cross, YMCA & YWCA, and

founding sponsors, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of the Philippines. Rotary has the honor of leading the walk after the Color Guards and Honor Band of the Philippines Navy. RCM was represented by SDG/PP “Frank” Evaristo, President, Alay Lakad Foundation, Inc., Pres. “Teddy” Ocampo, IPP “Ebot” Tan, Dir. “Albert” Alday, Chairman, Alay Lakad Committee, STAR Rtn. “Dong-Dong” Benedicto, Co-Chairman, Alay Lakad Committee, Spouse “Marilou” Benedicto, Ms. Annalie Garcia, SAA “Lance” Masters, PP Francis Juico, COS/PP Cesar Ubaldo, IPD Oscar del Rosario, RCM-sponsored Rotaract Club of Manila led by Pres. Katherine Kristine Reyes, and Rotaract Club of De La Salle University Manila led by Pres. Abigail Sarmiento. A special thank you to SDG/PP “Frank” Evaristo, Dir. “Albert” Alday and STAR Rotarian Dong Benedicto for contributing the theme polo shirts this year.

Alay Lakad President Frank received a check for P75,000 from District 3810 Governor Ernesto “Ernest” Yuyek, contributed by the more than seventy Rotary Clubs from our District that participated in the walk. Following the walk, participating RCMer’s were treated to a full breakfast at the historic and ever-elegant Manila Hotel, courtesy

of our very own Rotarian Ricky Yap, Executive Vice-President of the hotel. Thank you, Ricky! There is a special comradery attained through gathering so early in the morning for such a purpose. The fellowship is a rewarding part of coming together to help these “at-risk” youth, who otherwise might fall into even deeper poverty, or lives of crime. The money raised goes to direct educational support with scholarships, and micro-loans for livelihood projects. At-risk youth who gain dignity and hope through Alay Lakad’s programs become responsible citizens. Rotary is proud to support these efforts, all of which are harmonious with the aims of Rotary. * * * * * * * * *

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Positive Thinking Doctor: Your liver is enlarged. Patient: Does that mean it has space for more whisky? (This is called “Positive thinking”) * * * * * Lady to her dietician: What I am worried about is my height and not my weight. Doc: How come???

Lady: According to my weight, my height should be 7.8 feet… (Now this is called “Positive attitude”) * * * * * A man wrote to SBI. “My cheque was returned with remark “Insufficient funds”. I want to know whether it refers to mine or the Bank.” (This is self confidence in its peak) * * * * * This one is classic!! The Bishop came, laid his hands on my hand and said, “By the will of Jesus Christ, you will walk today!” I smiled and told him I was not paralysed. The Rabbi came, laid his hands on my hand and said, “By the will of God Almighty, you will walk today! He was not amused when I told him there was nothing wrong with me. The Mullah came, took my hands and said, “Insha Allah, you will walk today!” I politely told him, “There’s nothing wrong with me.” The Hindu Sadhu came and said, “Son, you will walk on your legs today.” I said “Babaji-nothing wrong with my legs.” The Buddhist Monk came, held my hands and said, “By the will of The Great Buddha, you will walk today!” I had to tell him there was nothing wrong with me. After the seminar, I stepped outside and found my car had been stolen. I believe in all religions now… * * * * * We Want It Back A U.S. Navy destroyer stops four Mexicans in a row boat rowing towards California. The captain gets on the loud-hailer and shouts, “Ahoy, small craft. Where are you headed?” One of the Mexicans puts down his oar, stands up, and replies, “We are invading the United States of America to reclaim the territory taken by the USA during the 1800s.” The entire crew of the destroyer doubled-over in laughter. When the captain was finally able to catch his breath, he gets back on the loud-hailer and asks, “Just the four of you?” The same Mexican stands up again and shouts, “No, we’re the last four. The rest are already there!” * * * * *

PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION AND CHILD CARE

WASH WITH SOAP AND WATER (Warning against some antibacterial soap)

Elias D. Adamos, M.D.

The US Food and Drug Administration recently impose ban on several key chemicals in antibacterial hand soaps. Studies have shown that some antibacterial hand soap in the market contains chemicals that may damage the body’s immune system. An FDA statement said: “Washing with plain soap and running water remains one of the most important steps consumers can take to avoid getting sick and to prevent spreading germs to others.” Firstly, are there really proofs that products labeled as “antibacterial” can keep you and your family away from germs and disease? According to FDA, there isn’t enough science to show that antibacterial soaps are better at preventing at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water. Secondly, since health benefits from antibacterial hand soap have not been proven, while they many are still widely used, are there potential negative effects on health, when they are used in long term? Yes. Antibacterial hand soaps may contain ingredients that are harmful to the body when used daily over a long period of time. Antibacterial soaps (and wash) include foam and liquid products, gel hand soaps, bar soaps, and body washes. What chemical ingredients in hand soap are harmful to the body? Many antibacterial soaps contain triclosan and triclocarban. These two active chemical ingredients in antibacterial hand soap are harmful to the body. Animal studies have shown that triclosan and triclocarban alter the way some hormones work in the body. The FDA, in its 2013 ruling, proclaimed: “Using these products might give people a false sense of security.” Manufacturers of hand soaps with these harmful ingredients have not proven that the chemicals are safe for daily use. They are therefore unsafe. What can you do if soap and water are not available? If soap and water are not available, a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol could be used instead.
