90 Years! It will be my pleasure to serve as the Chairman of the Board during the 90th Anniversary of the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce. Furthermore, our Grand Old Fourth of July Parade will celebrate its 50th Anniversary this year. We live in interesting, seemingly turbulent, times, but you can rest assured that my fellow Board Members, the staff and volunteers at the Chamber are working diligent-ly to bring stability and confidence to our slice of the economy and community here on Bainbridge Island.

I hope you’ll join me at this year’s 2nd Annual Celebrate Bainbridge event during the 4th of July Weekend. By collaborating with the Bainbridge Island Downtown Asso-ciation, the Rotary Club, Bainbridge Youth Services and the City, we have stitched together a fantastic community event that will bring us all together for a summer weekend that is unique to our Island.

In addition to Celebrate Bainbridge, you may have noticed some new efforts on be-half of our membership and the local community. Our office on Winslow Way now sells Fish & Game Licenses, we hosted our first Oktoberfest event, and our Board has voiced its position on issues before City Council, namely the public power effort and the development of the Suzuki property. You can expect us to continue to advocate for smart growth, smart infrastructure, and other issues that require productive, public debate.

By joining the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce, you have invested in the success and support of your own business, as well as the success of your fellow Chamber members and other aspects of our community that draw entrepreneurs and visitors to our island. The Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce serves our members –over 600 strong—and the community-at-large as a business advocacy organization and lead agency for island tourism and economic vitality.

Department of LicensingUnder the Chamber’s umbrella is a sub-agency of the State Department of Licensing, which processes transactions for vehicle, trailer, and boat licenses; vehicle registrations and title transfers, disabled parking permits, and more. Approximately 1,500 in-person and 250 telephone custom-ers are served each month.

Grand Old Fourth CelebrationThe Island’s biggest party is the Grand Old Fourth celebration, which includes a street fair, classic car show, one-mile long parade, music, food, entertainment, and throngs of islanders and visitors. The Bainbridge Island economy is diver-sified, from high tech and online global marketing to traditional retail and light industry; small, medium, and large compa-nies; start-ups and longstanding enterprises. The City of Bainbridge Island reports more than 4,000 businesses licensed to do busi-ness on the island. Bainbridge is quickly de-veloping a reputation for being a “business incubator,” due to a combination of factors: its setting of natural beauty, eco-friendly community, highly-educated population, and proximity to Seattle. In addition, the is-land has a number of critical resources: high speed Internet connections, a co-working center – OfficeXpats - and many business consultants and coaches including the busi-ness mentoring non-profits Kitsap SCORE and Accelerate Kitsap.

HIGH TECH

The island is home to several software developers, as well as numerous businesses involved in e-commerce. In August 2013, Google dubbed Bainbridge Island the “2013 Digital Capital of Washington State.” Google’s first annual eCity Awards recog-nized the top city or town in each state using the Internet to grow sales and the local economy. Several factors were used to determine the winners, including having an optimized web site and using social media

and mobile strategies.

STORE-FRONT BUSINESSES

Traditional retail and service-oriented brick-and-mortar businesses call Bainbridge home as well. Centrally-located Winslow is the largest commercial area with its main street core, marina district and High School Road shopping centers. The second-largest business district on the island is Lynwood Center on the southern shore. Rolling Bay and Island Center are the two other neigh-borhood business centers.

LIGHT INDUSTRY

There are two industrial business parks on Bainbridge Island. Day Road Business Park covers more than 30 acres of land and contains 35-plus businesses, employing more than 500 people. Coppertop Business Center currently has more than 100,000 sq. ft. of rentable area in 9 buildings on 7 acres and is currently expanding.

Sage Manufacturing, which produces high quality fly fishing gear, relocated its operations to Day Road in 1989 from another island location. Also located in the business park is Net Systems, one of the world’s largest producers of deep sea fishing systems for large trawlers. The company also

produces netting for commercial fishing and sports equipment, including the recent net parachute. Other Day Road businesses include a construction firm, a yoga studio, a biotech firm, a martial arts facility, and a cannabis shop.

Coppertop is home to a brewery, organic distillery, two wineries, a coffee roaster, an indoor rock-climbing facility, several health professionals, a ballet school, a café/catering firm, and others.

The Washington State Ferry system operates its maintenance and repair facility for all state ferries at Eagle Harbor, employing approximately 120 people there and an additional 36 employees at the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal.

WORKFORCE

Because of the short commute to downtown Seattle, a large percentage of the population of Bainbridge Island works in Seattle. It is estimated that 39% of islanders commute to Seattle and 43% work in the island’s business districts. Most of the remainder of islanders work elsewhere on Bainbridge or in Kitsap County. The Bainbridge Island School District is the island’s largest employer.

The first step is to decide what business structure you will use: sole proprietor, corporation (several options), partnership, etc. You may wish to consult an attorney or CPA to select the best fit for your company.

Next, register the business with the State of Washington. The State provides one-stop business registration to assist in understand-ing and meeting federal, state and local li-censing requirements. The process includes completing a Master Business Application and registering a Trade Name. The State will issue you a UBI number.

Ask islanders why they live on Bainbridge Island and they’ll most likely say, “the sense of community.” It’s a combination of rural setting and small-town friendliness plus a highly-educated, involved population celebrating arts and culture (see page XX), rich and diverse history, fine cuisine with local foods and wines amidst a panorama of natural beauty.

More non-profit organizations are registered on Bainbridge than anywhere else in Wash-ington State. Clubs, organizations, faith communities, school PTOs – there’s always something going on. Plus, the park district, senior center, and library each offer full calendars of activities.

Then, there’s the Great Outdoors. Our mild climate means that most sports and outdoor

activities can be done year-round. Biking, hiking, bird-watching, gardening, fishing, beachcombing, kayaking, SCUBA diving, and golf are some of the favorites. Rain doesn’t stop us (but the occasional snowfall might) – and most islanders have long since ditched their umbrellas, opting instead for hooded parkas.

Bainbridge is an island, but the bridge at Agate Passage connects us to the Kitsap Peninsula and our proximity to Seattle (35 minutes by ferry) for work or entertain-ment keeps us from being too remote and isolated.

Bainbridge Island School District is con-sistently ranked among the top in the state for test scores, graduation rates and other critical criteria. With an enrollment of al-most 4,000 students, it is the community’s largest employer with a staff of over 500. BISD’s mission is to prepare students for the global workplace, college and personal success.

In 2011, Newsweek designated Bainbridge High School (BHS) as one of “America’s Best High Schools,” and US News & World Report ranked BHS as a Silver Medal high school in its top 500 out of 21,000 public high schools reviewed. The district operates three elementary schools, one intermediate

school, one middle school, and one high school.

The island also offers educational alterna-tives including a small family-based alter-native public elementary program, a small alternative public high school, a program of contract studies featuring computer-based course-work, and strong support services for home schooling. In addition, there are several private pre-schools and elementary schools and one middle school offering classes up to 9th grade. West Sound Academy, just over the bridge, is a private preparatory middle school and high school.

Post-secondary education is available through Olympic College at its Bremer-ton and Poulsbo campuses with extension classes in other locations throughout Kitsap County.

Bainbridge Gardens is one of the fore-most locally-owned nurseries in the Pacific Northwest, inspired by Zenhichi Harui and his son, Junkoh. The Bloedel Reserve public garden, on the island’s northeast end, comprises 150 acres, about one-third of which is dedicated to a series of gardens, ponds, meadows and wild-life habitats, including a Japanese garden named one of the top ten in the U.S. The Reserve, once the home of members of the famous Bloedel timber family, is open to the public year-round, from Tuesday through Sunday, except most federal holidays. The Bainbridge Island Historical Muse-um, located at 215 Ericksen Av NE, is a great place to get acquainted with the is-land’s intriguing past. Much of the island’s

Recently designated a satellite of the Mini-doka Internment National Monument in Idaho, the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial commem-orates the internment of Bainbridge Island’s Japanese American population – 227 men, women, and children – who were the first in the nation to be evacuated and incar-cerated for the duration of the war. Bainbridge Performing Arts is the island’s community theater with a mission to educate, entertain, and encourage youth and adults in the performing arts of theatre, music, and dance. IslandWood, a 255-acre environmental education & event center, is a model of energy conservation, composting, recycling and alternative energy sources. Frog Rock, an iconic island landmark, has been gracing the corner of North Madison Avenue & Phelps Road for more than forty years. Sometimes it acquires a costume for holidays. It’s the site of many a souvenir selfie.

Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Parks & Recreation District manages more than 1600 acres of parkland in more than 30 locations on the island, including one national park – Pritchard Park/Japanese American Exclusion Memorial; two former state parks – Fay Bainbridge and Fort Ward; the Strawberry Hill Recreation Center; a public aquatic center with two pools; two off-leash dog parks and several historic buildings that are used for classes and events.

The best hiking can be found at Gazzam Lake and in the 240-acre Grand Forest of Bainbridge, which contains a 75-year-old evergreen forest, wetlands, wildlife habitat, and walking trails.

Battle Point Park features sports fields, walking/jogging paths, an astronomical observatory, a pond, a pea patch commu-nity garden, and the fantastic Kids Up playground.

Manzanita Park totals 120 acres and in-cludes both walking and equestrian trails.The island is home to three golf courses--two private and one public.

With water all around us, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of it. Kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and electric boats can be rented, as well as SCUBA gear.

Public boat launching sites are at Fort Ward and Eagle Harbor Waterfront Park. The latter also has a transient tie-up dock – and local marinas have temporary moorage available as well.

Both Fay Bainbridge and Fort Ward parks are waterfront parks with picnic facilities and restrooms. Camping and RV sites at

Fay Bainbridge may be reserved online or by phone. A few public road ends around the island also provide access to the shore. For a very special experience, Adventure-terra canopy tree climbing provides the equipment and guides to get you 150-200 feet up a Douglas fir tree. Minimum age is 8 years old.

Bainbridge has a thriving arts community that includes artists, writers, actors, and musicians. It also has an art museum with free admission and excellent galleries, such as Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, Bainbridge Performing Arts, Bainbridge Library and the Island Gallery (check out Art Galleries inside). On the first Friday of every month the galleries host openings from 6-8 p.m., often with refreshments and live music. Consignment art is regularly on display in island churches, restaurants and cafes, public facilities, and many businesses.

Our community calendar is packed with activities and events. Two theater compa-nies, an improv troupe, a musical theater company, a symphony orchestra, chorale, and several concert series offer performanc-es throughout the year. There are monthly planetarium shows at the Ritchie Observa-tory. Eagle Harbor Book Company and the Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network (BARN) writers group offer workshops, readings and other events. The island is home to more than 70 book groups, includ-ing one for commuters that meets on the ferry. Both the park district/senior center and the library add to the mix with sum-mer movies in the park, summer concerts in the park, monthly dances — from contra dance to Nordic to salsa — and a wide range of classes, workshops and excursions.

Coming in the summer of 2017 is the new facility for BARN, a nonprofit cooperative of artists and craftspeople offering classes, workshops and open studios for woodwork-ing and metal arts, fiber and glass arts, elec-tronic and technical arts, jewelry making, print making, kitchen arts, and writing and book arts. bainbridgebarn.org

Bainbridge Island has a variety of com-mercial establishments, including one-of-a-kind, locally-owned retail shops, restau-rants, two movie theaters, art galleries, museums, and a number of banks. Much of the commercial development is concentrat-ed in downtown Winslow on and around Winslow Way, Madison Avenue and High School Road. Three other neighborhood service cen-ters--Lynwood Center, Island Center and Rolling Bay, located in other parts of the island--provide local residents and visitors with additional restaurants, retail and service opportunities. Recently, commer-cial activity at Lynwood Center has been expanded with the addition of the Pleasant

Beach Village complex with its coffee shop, restaurant, boutique inn, DIY dog wash, a 50s retro burger joint, and other dining and retail options. There is plenty of great shopping on the island, from antique stores to boutiques to specialty stores with unique gift ideas. You can outfit yourself with clothing and gear for just about any sport — from bikes to golf to kayaks. Eagle Harbor Book Com-pany is one of the last independent book-stores in the Northwest, while Church-mouse Yarns & Teas has earned a regional (as well as online) reputation as a knitter’s paradise. Pelindaba Lavender features the fragrant herb in more than 200 different products. Mora Iced Creamery dishes out

some of the best home-made ice cream in the Puget Sound, making Bainbridge one of the top 25 “Ice Cream Cities in Amer-ica” according to Food & Wine Magazine.
