One of the world’s largest operating CFB boilers.

Baima is an anthracite fired 300 MWe power plant built in the Sichuan province of China. It was a demonstration plant for large capacity CFB boilers under the Transfer of Technology agreement to three of China’s major boiler manufacturers, and seven members of the Chinese Electric Power Design Institute.

The deployment of large utility class Alstom CFBs was to help meet China’s rapid demand growth with clean, cost-effective power.

CHALLENGES•Fuel flexibility: The fuel as received at Baima is a very difficult fuel with low volatile

matter and high ash content including stones. Alstom CFB boiler technology must accommodate to considerable variations in fuel quality that happen over a few operating hours.

•No back-end flue gas cleaning systems required: 95% sulphur removal rate is

reached without scrubber while the potential SO2 is close to 12,000 mg / Nm3 and a challenging low limestone consumption is required corresponding to a 1.6 Ca / S ratio.

•Minimum load without oil support: Alstom CFB technology has the advantage of minimum load without oil support (technical minimum) firing anthracite while keeping the steam temperatures at the 540°C / 540°C rated values.

proJECt rESuLtS•Alstom CFB technology met all the performance guarantees with a

1% increase in the boiler efficiency because of low unburnt carbon.•Low Nox emission over a wide range of operation has demonstrated

that 100 mg / Nm3 can be controlled with Alstom CFB technology without need of back end treatment such as SNCR.•Availability was continually improved to go up to 99% rate, after two

years of commercial operation.
