Agriculture and Forestry subjects are featured in this year’s world top 100 world
university rankings. This achievement has placed IPB as the only Indonesian
university to be in equal position with the world's other prestigious universities.
The annual QS World University Ranking by Subject lists the world's top
universities in a range of popular subject areas according to four different criteria:
research quality, graduate employability, international outlook, and teaching
quality. The rankings aimed not only to provide information regarding the world's
top universities and their global competitiveness, primarily for students, but also to
highlight the university’s strengths and to further focus on certain areas that need
to be developed within the university.
Offering 22 professional, 38 undergraduate, 79 master and 48 doctoral study
programs under nine faculties, namely: Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Fisheries
and Marine Science, Animal Science, Forestry, Agricultural Engineering and
Technology, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Economics and Management, and
Human Ecology, and three schools, namely: Business School, Graduate School,
and Vocational School, IPB has emerged one of the most innovative university in
Indonesia and the most comprehensive Agricultural Study Program in Southeast
Asia. This achievement, however, is expected to be a motivation for IPB to improve
its outstanding performance for excellent teaching and research, academic
services, the number of publications, the number of citations, and the number of
international faculty staffs and students.

Prof. Anas Miftah Fauzi, Vice Rector for Research and Cooperation of IPB explained that the utilization of herbal
medicine, termed Jamu, has passed down through generations in Indonesia. Various herbal medicines are commonly
consumed for their benefits in healing and improving the health of Indonesian people. Unfortunately, this herbal
medicine is little-known outside of the country. Therefore, “The purpose of this summer course is to introduce and
promote the herbal medicine and medicinal plant of Indonesia to the world.” added the course leader of this event, Prof.
Ervizal AM Zuhud of IPB.
Participants from both universities seemed to enjoy all activities offered in the summer course which consisted of
lecturing and field visiting. Several interesting places in West Java that had been planned for this event were visited,
including the Cikabayan Experimental Garden and the Collection Garden of Biopharmaca Research Center in Bogor, the
Organic Herbs Village of Martha Tilaar (Kampung Djamoe Organik) in Bekasi, PT Holistic BioMedicine in Purwakarta and
Kampung Naga in Garut.

A Field Work to Strengthen the Relationship
between Indonesia-Japan in SUIJI-SLP 2016
About 23 Japanese and 26 Indonesian Students took
part in the SUIJI-SLP (Service Learning Program) project
organized by the Institute of Research and Community
Empowerment of Bogor Agricultural University (LPPM-
IPB), Directorate of Collaboration and International
Program of IPB, and the Directorate of Student Affairs of th th
IPB from 26 February to 9 March 2016 in Indonesia.
Explained by Dr. I Wayan Astika, the Chairman of the
Organizing Committee for SUIJI- SLP 2016, this activity
aimed to facilitate Japanese students in learning many
aspects of Indonesia, particularly the Indonesian culture
which was formed and grows within differing geographic
and demographic conditions. Field work was chosen to
be the main activity performed by the participants as
they were able to learn the local culture faster from the
local communities.Llater the students will be able to
implement the local wisdom in the future society. Field
work locations took place in the villages (Bojong, Tuwel,
Siarsih and Karang Mulya Village) in Tegal Regency,
Central Java and also the villages in the campus ring area
of IPB Darmaga (Cikarawang, Situ Gede and Bubulak
Villages).
Prof. Shigeyuki Tajima, the representative of
Japanese lecturers, responded that the achievement
made by the students during the field work showed
that SUIJI-SLP program was successful as it was well-
implemented and benefited both students and local
communities. Furthermore, Dr. I Wayan Astika said
that IPB is looking forward to the development of
SUIJI partnership through a knowledge exchange
forum between Japanese and Indonesian students
that will hopefully be further formed.
SUIJI which stands for “Six University Initiative
Japan-Indonesia” is a consortium of three Indonesian
Universities (Bogor Agricultural University,
Universitas Gadjah Mada and University of
Hasanuddin) and three Japanese Universities (Ehime
University, Kochi University, and Kagawa University).
Academic and research cooperation were established
in many sectors including (1) Forestry, (2)
Environment Control, (3) Functional Foods, (4)
Fisheries and Marine Sciences, (5) Hydrology &
Micrometeorology and (6) Soil Sciences & Nano-
technology.
