WHY BACKING UP IS IMPORTANT
❖ Large amount of data on our electronic devices ▪ Work documents ▪ Personal finances ▪ Photos ▪ Videos
❖ Imagine losing all that data
❖ It is possible to recover data from broken hard drives but there are no guarantees
❖ Best form of defence is a good offence – be proactive

❖ Simplest form of backup is manually copying your files from one location to another
❖ If you have multiple hard drives in your computer you can run a back up from one to another
❖ Better if transferred to an external hard drive
❖ Downsides are remembering to do the backup and on a regular basis

❖ For Windows there is an integrated backup system
❖ Start button, select Settings > Update & security > Backup > Add a drive, and then choose an external drive or network location for your backups.
❖ Going into advanced options allows you decide what files how often your computer backs up

❖ As part of Windows backup a System Image
can be created
❖ System images create a copy of a system
drive
❖ If your system drive fails, system images can
be used to restore the data from your old
drive
❖ It is a complete copy of the drive – requires

❖ If you want more flexibility third party
programmes exist
❖ These will allow you to decide when a back
up occurs to avoid slowing down your
computer when you are using it
❖ Some paid for programmes consolidate
backing up of data on all devices

❖ Photos can be set to backup automatically to Google Photos,
alternatively you can backup manually by connecting to a
computer
❖ If you use google contacts then contact information associated
with google account is backed up automatically
❖ App data, call history and device settings can be set to backup to
Google Drive automatically
❖ When changing phones many phone manufacturers have their
own data transfer apps to help 8

❖ iOS automatically backs up your iPhone data up to a limit of 5GB
for free, for more space you will need to pay
❖ Backup all your phones data manually to your computer using
iTunes - Like all manual backups, needs to be conducted regularly
to be most effective
❖ Alternatively use third party cloud services

❖ One Drive allows for multiple users to edit documents
simultaneously
