President’s Report

Hello BAARS Members and Supporters,

The BAARS Holiday Party & Elections will be on December 6th, starting at 6 p.m., at the LosAltos Library. We’ll vote in new officers and have a potluck dinner with a raffle and giftexchange! We are actively recruiting new members for the BAARS board, so if you’vebeen thinking that hanging out with fellow herpers is fun, then think about joining theboard!

We have several open officer positions, including secretary and publicity chairperson(social media). If you’re interested in getting more connected to BAARS and the boardmembers, please, come to the Holiday Party and “throw your name in the hat”!

As most members should be aware, BAARS doesn’t hold the regular general meetings inNovember or December, but we will have our Holiday Party on December 6th. BAARSdoesn’t meet in these months because of the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

For those of you who missed it, for our October meeting, we had Gerold Merker, whogave a very interesting presentation on Hognose snakes, including the Mexican Hognosesnake. For those interested in finding out more about these very endearing (“cute”)snakes, along with other snakes that Gerold and Cindy are breeding, check out theirwebsite: http://geroldandcindymerkerreptiles.com/.

Next year, we will be starting the general meetings 30 minutes earlier, since the results ofthe poll that we sent out indicated that this was preferred by most respondents. Thus, instead of starting the meetings at 8 p.m., we’ll start the meetings at 7:30 p.m., and doorsopen at 7:00 p.m. (instead of 7:30 p.m.). For some meetings, depending on traffic, I mightbe challenged to get up to Palo Alto by 7:30 p.m. (since I'll be working in San Ramon or inSeaside). However, I’ll coordinate with the other board members to ensure that someoneis able to start the general meetings at 7:30 p.m.. This should work much better forfamilies and folks who work or live fairly close by. Please help us get the word out! Tell afriend, and let’s get a bunch of fellow herpers together to discuss our animals, husbandry, and breeding!

Treasurer’s Reportby Scott Petersen

This report covers the club’s fiscal activities for October 2013.

Overall, things are looking good for the club. We took in $284.86 in income, with $68.81 in expenses, for the month of

October. This resulted in a $216.05 positive cash flow for the month. Year-to-date cash flow is a positive $383.73.

There were two expenses for the month: the Hardcopy Newsletter printing and postage $18.81, and the $50 October

speaker stipend. There was no room rent because we will not be having a meeting in November (we pay for the

upcoming month prior to the 1st of that month).

Income for October came from two $50 show stipends (PAMP and Friends of the Library), a $25 donation from a

new/renewing member, $59.86 from the donation jar for 2 shows & the general meeting food. We also had $100 of

income from 3 memberships (one was for 2 years).

Looking towards the end of the year, we are looking at ~$305 in planned expenses. Specifically:

● at least $ 225.74 in general room rent (for January) & 2014 yearly insurance

● ~$40 for hardcopy newsletter printing & postage (assumes a November & December publication)

● up to $40 is allocated for holiday party expenses

As long as we don’t have any unplanned expenses, even if we don’t take in any more income, we should end the

year on the slightly positive side of zero. In other words, we will end the year at the same financial point that we

started at.

The one income item that has not been taken into account in the above numbers, because I have no idea what to

expect, are any funds raised by the BAARS 2013 fundraiser. The deadline was November 1st, so I will be reporting

back in the next newsletter on how the club did.

As of 10/31/2013, the club had the following assets:

● Checking: $3072.76

● Salamander fund: $213.00

● Legal & tax fund: $755.00

● Petty Cash: $40.00

Posting Date: ___YTD__ 8/31/2013 9/30/2013 10/31/2013

Expenses $1910.37 $85.04 $77.88 $68.81

Income: $2294.10 $413.25 $256.71 $284.86
