President’s Report

Hello BAARS Members and Supporters,

Can’t believe that another month has flown by. I’d like to thank Dr. Bob Norris for

giving a great presentation last month (in May). For those of you who missed it,

Dr. Norris spoke on venomous snake and arthropod bites (from spiders,

scorpions, ticks, and mosquitoes). Dr. Norris is the head of Stanford’s

Department of Emergency Medicine, a staunch BAARS supporter, and an expert

in the area treating venomous snake and spider bites.

Our June general meeting will feature Dave Colling, who is a successful breeder

of Rainbow Boas and runs Rainbows-R-Us

(http://http://rainbows-r-us-reptiles.com/homepage.htm). Dave is a long-time

BAARS member and has had some pretty remarkable success with pioneering new

genetic morphs (see below, for a picture of “Zena”, a Super Candy Stripe Brazilian

Rainbow Boa).

July is still open, but I’m trying to get Al Wolf locked down for July 26th. If he can’t

make July, BAARS will try to book him for September. Al Wolf runs Sonoma

County Reptile Rescue and always brings rattlesnakes (which seems to make for a

very entertaining meeting).

August we’ll have “Turtle and Tortoise” night (with support from the Silicon

Valley Turtle and Tortoise club). We plan on featuring James Liu at the August

meeting; he is the former collections manager to the Behler Chelonian

Conservation Center and has extensive experience in keeping rare species of

turtles and tortoises. James was planning on speaking at our June meeting, but is

currently in Nicaragua working with turtles of Central America.

On July 27th, BAARS will be having the “Reptile Rally” at the Sulphur Creek Nature

Center in Hayward. This is a great little nature center, close to downtown

Hayward, and a great venue to bring our reptiles and help educate the public.

Please, remember to check the events calendar for the latest information on the

educational shows that BAARS participates in.

Try to make the next BAARS general meeting (June 28th), and try to introduce a

friend to BAARS!! There’s a lot that BAARS has to offer, but we need help to get

the word out!!

Sincerely,

Scott Alexander, BAARS Interim President, 2013

Member Feedbackfrom Tony Velez

We had a good turnout last night at the BAARS meeting. 40 people came to hear and see Dr. Bob Norris;

good to see some old and new faces. We have some fun events coming up like Sulphur Creek, and Santa

Clara County Fair. Check out the BAARS web site often for updates. We need plenty of volunteers for these

events -- please support BAARS at these events. You may want to talk to any of us that have done events to

find out how much fun they are.

See you soon,

Tony, proud member of BAARS

May General Meeting Guest Speaker:

Dr. Bob Norris

by Scott Petersen

At the BAARS May general meeting, those attending once again had the great fortune to be educated,

informed, and amused by Dr. Robert Norris. As many of you know, Dr. Norris, besides being a Professor of

Surgery and Chief of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University Medical Center, also has an emphasis in

Wilderness medicine and Venomous Bites and Stings, amongst other areas of specialty. BAARS is fortunate

that he is also a big supporter of herpers and herping, which helps him tailor his presentation to our unique

audience.

During his presentation, the BAARS audience was fortunate to not only learn about venomous snakes, but

biting and stinging insects as well. Recognizing that many in his audience at the BAARS meeting pursue

their herping interest out into the field, he provided both insight and education into some of the insectoid

creatures that one may encounter in fields, deserts, and forests. He covered a broad range of insects from

ticks, bees, wasps, spiders, centipedes, to scorpions (I am sure I have missed a few here). Besides learning

about the fascinating chemistry of their venom and how it affects tissue, the nervous system, and

circulatory system, we also learned about their habitats, defense mechanisms, and mating rituals. For

example, many people were not aware that many Brown Recluse bites are not felt initially, and they have

not established themselves in California. We also learned that size sometimes does matter in the case of

scorpions, where it is the smaller species that we need to be more concerned with.

When it come to venomous snakes, we are fortunate in California to only have to worry about the

rattlesnakes, while other parts of the USA also have to worry about copperheads, water moccasins, and

coral snakes. But when it comes to California rattlesnakes, the different subspecies appear to have

different temperaments. Some are aggressive, while others seem to be less affected by human proximity.

It was interesting to learn that North American venomous snakes are not nearly as deadly as many of the

venomous snakes found in other parts of the world. And while it is still possible to die from a North

American venomous snake bite, the number of deaths has been greatly reduced with proper medical care.

Most of the deaths here are the result of delaying or not seeking medical help, secondary complications, or

a complete lack of common sense. We learned that coral snakes can be found in pine and scrub oak sandhill

habitats, as well as sometimes inhabiting hardwood areas and pine flatwoods that undergo seasonal

flooding. Despite their very toxic venom, the fact that very few bites are reported is due mainly to their

reclusive nature, and their preference of flight over fight. One last bit of information that was shared was

that the poem used to remember the difference between a coral snake and a king snake: “Red touches

yellow, kills a fellow. Red touches black, friend of Jack” only works north of Mexico City. Below that latitude

the poem may not hold true.

From the BAARS Archives: How Old Is BAARS?

Is BAARS actually 30 years old?

How would we know? Well, we are actually not totally sure anymore as several long-standing members

have reported in with more information. So, if you know something, let us know!

The Board has documents indicating BAARS was founded officially in 1983.

However, Karen and Gary Schroeder wrote the following:We still have newsletters from as far back as Feb. of 1981, labeled Vol. V , No. 2, and I was newsletter editorthen. I am pretty sure we joined the club around 1978, and we were among a small group who paid $100 toraise money for the club treasury to keep the infant organization going. That giant membership fee gave usmembership “for life,” and never having to pay dues again. In 1981 we were meeting at the West Berkeleypublic library. The founder of the club was Karen Shushan. We moved to Amarillo, TX. in Dec. of 1984 andhave lived here for 28 1/2 yrs. Soooo, I’d say BAARS is at least 35 yrs. old.

Pete Marshall found an article about BAARS from1996 in Reptiles Magazine -------------------------->

The Editor speculates that Karen may have changedher name over time and did some sleuthing, butdid not come up with anything conclusive to post.

Treasurer’s Reportby Scott Petersen

This report covers the club’s fiscal activities for May 2013.

Monthly income for the month of May was greater than the monthly expenses for the first time in the last

three months. As you can see from the table below, this month’s positive cash cancels out the loss from the

previous two months.

This reversal can be directly attributed to the generous stipend received from the Sherman Oaks School for

Tanya, Austin, & Aria’s participation in their Earth Day event; to the generosity of BAARS members and

guests in their donations at the food table during the May general meeting; new & renewed memberships;

and a donation from Tony as a result of rodent sales.

Expenses for the month were limited to general meeting room rental and hardcopy newsletter printing and

postage.

Total assets for the club also increased to $3,458.14 as of the end of May.

● Original artwork that appropriately represents the club and our activities

● Digital or non-digital, as long as it can be scanned, photographed, or otherwise represented

electronically in sufficiently high resolution. For digital submissions, a non-lossy format, such as

PNG is preferred.

The fine print:

All submissions become the exclusive property of BAARS and can be altered as needed. (We need to own

CORRECTION: by The Editor

Hi BAARS Members, the May 2013 BAARS newsletter printed an article that implied that you needed a California Fishing

License to keep native pet reptiles and amphibians. As this has been an open and speculated onquestion before among BAARS Members, I contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife toget a definite answer. Our correspondence is included below.

Question: Is there any l icense or permit required to possess native reptiles not for any purposes l isted below? Inparticular, is a valid fishing l icense required to possess a legally obtained native reptile as a "pet"?

Native Reptile CaptivePropagation Permit

$59.23 Required for every person, who, for commercial purposes, sells, possesses, transports, imports, exports or propagates native reptiles or whopropagates native reptiles for noncommercial purposes.

Scientific Collecting Permit $307.50 Issued to any resident or nonresident to take or possess, in any part ofthe state, for scientific, educational, or propagation purposes, mammals, birds and the nests and eggs thereof, fish, amphibians, reptiles, or any other form of plant or animal l ife.

Good afternoon Aleks,Your email has been forwarded to me for response.Regarding the possession of native reptiles, there are some native reptiles that are l isted as Restricted Species andcannot be taken or kept as pets. Please see the hyperlink for the Restricted Species Laws and Regulations. You willfind Section 671(c)(11), Title 14 of the CCR, on page 10, that begins the l ist of restricted reptiles.http://www.nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=28427&inline=trueIn order to legally take a non-restricted native reptile from the wild, you will need a valid 2013 Sport Fishing License. Please see Section 5.60, Title 14, of the CCR in the provided linkhttp://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/FreshFish-Mar2013/ccr-t14-sec5_60.htmlOr the 2013-2014 California Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations, starting on page 20, for the l ist of reptiles and baglimits. As long as the reptile was legally taken with a Sports Fishing License, a valid l icense is not required forkeeping a native reptile in your possession. (e.g. If you legally caught a Salmon with your Sport Fishing License, youcould gift it to a friend or family member and they would not need a valid Sport Fishing License to keep it in theirfreezer.)If you do plan on the propagation of Native Reptiles, you will need to apply for a Native Reptile Captive PropagationPermit. Please see the hyperlink for the current laws and regulations regarding Native Reptile Captive Propagation.https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=35207&inline=trueIf you have any further questions, I can be reached at either at this email address or the phone number l isted below.
