Edinburgh Napier University is one of CityU SCOPE’s largest UK partners of Higher Education in Hong Kong. It is one of the largest universities in Scotland, with over 18,000 students. The University is split into six schools:

Professional RecognitionAssociation of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)Depending on prior learning and academic background, graduates of the programme who have met the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) student registration requirements may be granted exemptions up to 7 out of 14 papers from the ACCA professional examination scheme.

Institute of Certified Management Accountant (ICMA)Gradudates of the honors degree will be entitled to 16 exemptions out of 18-unit ICMA examinations and apply for Graduate Management Accountant (GMA) designation.

HKCAAVQ Accreditation1) This programme is:

• accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) to reach HKQF Level 5;

Programme Aims and ObjectivesThe programme aims to provide students with a coherent and vocationally relevant academic curriculum, designed to equip students for employment as an accounting professional in industry and for a variety of responsible posts within the financial services industry.

Knowledge and UnderstandingOn completion of this programme of study, students will have:

• A sound knowledge and understanding of how accounting, finance and financial services are related and the business/financial institutional relationships

• A critical understanding of the established theories, principles, concepts, and emerging issues in accounting, finance and financial services

• A systematic, extensive and comparative knowledge and understanding of the accountant’s role in providing tactical and strategic support in the areas of reporting, decision-making, planning, control and performance measurement

• A sound knowledge and understanding of the financial services environment and a variety of specialist disciplines including financial services marketing, financial institution management, and corporate risk management

• Skills in identifying information needs and in the systematic gathering, analysis and interpretation of ideas, concepts and qualitative and quantitative data as well as information from a range of evaluated sources including current research, and scholarly/professional literature

Skills and Other AttributesOn completion of this programme of study, students will have developed the ability to:

• Structure and communicate ideas effectively, both in writing and orally, using appropriate media

• Use IT and appropriate software

• Research and collate information, using analytical and problem-solving skills to interpret that information and draw reasonable conclusions

Programme Structure#

The BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance programme consists of a total of 480 credits. In Hong Kong, students will articulate into this programme from relevant sub-degree programmes and be required to complete 260 credits.

As a top-up programme, it offers modules at Level 8 (Year 2 Scottish Undergraduate programme), Level 9 (Year 3) and Level 10 (Year 4). It consists of 11 compulsory modules, including one level 8, six (or seven depending on options selected) level 9 modules, four (or five) level 10 modules, and a dissertation.

• Holders of Diploma who can show that they have relevant qualifications and / or experience may be admitted with dispensation to the programme.

Teaching and LearningProgramme DeliveryThe programme will mainly be delivered through intensive face-to-face lectures conducted by the academic staff from Edinburgh Napier University and supported by tutorials taught by local tutors. Each dissertation will be supervised by the academic staff from Edinburgh Napier University (Part-time programme) or CityU SCOPE (Full-time programme).

ClassesFull-time Mode:Students are required to take two or three modules in a trimester. Each module normally consists of 18 to 28 lecture hours and 18 to 24 tutorial hours, depending on the credits and requirement of the module. The lectures and tutorials will normally be run in an intensive mode on weekdays.

Part-time Mode:Students are required to take one or two modules in a trimester. Each module normally consists of 18 to 28 lecture hours and 18 to 24 tutorial hours, depending on the credits and requirement of the module. The lectures and tutorials will normally be run in an intensive mode during weekends and weekday evenings.

VenueClasses will be held in SCOPE@CityU (Kowloon Tong), SCOPE TST East Learning Centre (Tsim Sha Tsui) or other learning centres/off-campus venues designated by CityU SCOPE.

Student SupportStudents registered in the programme will be issued a CityU SCOPE Student ID Card and an Edinburgh Napier University Matriculation Card. Services provisions include

access to CityU’s Run Run Shaw Library, Computing Services Centre, University’s e-Portal, electronic services and student LAN, as well as electronic resources provided by Edinburgh Napier University.

Assessment and AwardFor each of the main modules, the programme is normally assessed on a weighting of coursework and examinations. A student will be awarded the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance conferred by Edinburgh Napier University when he/she has successfully completed the programme in accordance with the programme requirements. Students may also apply to exit with an ordinary degree.
