Why choose this course?You'll develop the knowledge and skillsyou'll need to become a multi-skilledmultimedia professional, ready for acareer in journalism, online or broadcastmedia production, PR, advertising,corporate communications, law andpublic administration or politics.

What you’ll coverAbout the courseOn this course there's an emphasis ondeveloping creative, versatile journalistswith expertise in a variety of productiontechniques.

You'll also get a chance to concentrate ona particular journalistic genre, for examplesports reporting, fashion or musicjournalism.

You will study research techniques, lawand journalism theory. You’ll also do workplacements throughout the course.

How you’ll learnThe Journalism programme is convergentso practice modules will give you accessto the student journalism website, DerbySphere which serves as a publishing siteas well as a learning tool.

You'll have opportunities to work on realprojects and will do location stories as amatter of course. We have great contactswith local radio, newspapers and TV. Youmay also choose to develop your skills byworking for our student radio station,Dusted magazine, or the Sports websiterun by the Student Union.

Your careerThe Journalism programme is linked withcurrent industry practice. We runEmployability Days every year whereindustry editors across all platformscome to talk to students about workplacements, and what they need fromyoung journalists.

Additional informationAll Journalism staff are industryprofessionals as well as lecturers. They allhave many years experience as staff inmedia organisations and as freelancejournalists, in print, stills, documentary,radio, TV and online media. Most of themalso have national and internationalawards.

You'll be based at Markeaton Street,where you'll study in our excellentfacilities which include two radio studiosand a fully equipped television studio,video editing suites, Mac suites and anintegrated newsroom equipped with thelatest industry standard software.
