B NAI TORAH CONGREGATION
Dear B’nai Torah Family,
We are writing in reference to the $36 optional contribution to Israel Bonds, which is on your dues statement. Our board voted to leave this as an option, a respectful gesture to our membership. We encourage you to add this $36 voluntarily… and we will explain why.
Israel has been the source of a lot of disagreement amongst Jews over the last few years. Most recently, we were saddened to hear of the government’s decision to abandon the carefully crafted agreement to build an egalitarian plaza at the Western Wall. We hope for progress on that important issue, and others too. There are great challenges to be faced, as there have been great challenges since Israel’s inception. Yet, no matter where you stand on the issues Israel faces, we all agree on the significance of the Jewish State to us as American Jews, to world Jewry, and to the world at large. For all sorts of reasons that we agree upon, Israel must remain a Jewish State, a strong independent democracy, and a haven for all Jews.
Most organizations that support Israel do so from a particular perspective. But Israel Bonds is in existence solely to support Israel in its building of an infrastructure and the foundation of its economic well-being. That is why we place it in our dues structure. Our capacity to step forward in this way models something for every synagogue in the country. We were the first to do so, and there will be many to follow. This commitment is a win/win; for the synagogue and for Israel. The synagogue will invest all monies collected through this initiative in an Israel bond. At maturation it can be reinvested, and the interest earned will contribute to our synagogue’s financial resources. And so we encourage you - we are counting on you - to commit to this extra $36 with your membership dues.
We wish you a great summer and look forward to being together soon.
Sincerely,
Rabbi David SteinhardtRabbi David EnglanderRabbi Rikki Arad, Executive Director Steve Ginsburg, President
