FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

MAY 19-20, 2019

WELCOME TO WORSHIP “The Glory of the Risen Lord”

The season of Easter calls us to revel in the heart of the gospel. Salvation is ours in the

risen Christ. And the glory of the risen Lord shines upon us and brings great blessings.

Each week we hear readings from St. John’s gospel and acknowledge what the glory of

our Savior does for us. This week, the glory of the risen Lord prepares us to love.

WORSHIP HOSPITALITY

We are very pleased that you have joined us for worship. If this is the first time you

have been our guest, we hope you will join us again. If you have any questions or if you

need assistance with anything, please ask one of our ushers or greeters in the back of

church. We also invite you to please sign our friendship register at the time noted in

the service folder.

The rest rooms and drinking fountains are located just a few feet down the hallway to

the right as you leave the church sanctuary. During worship, if you have small children

who need to be quieted for a few moments, feel free to make use of the enclosed “Cry

Room” on the south side of the church. Also, a quiet place to feed or nurse your new-

born may be found in the library, which is off the hallway, just beyond the restrooms.

WORSHIP SERVICE NOTES

The order of service is printed out in the bulletin for you. Please ask one of the ushers

if you need a large print bulletin. Many of the hymns are taken from our red hymnals,

which you can find in the pew hymnal rack.

God bless your worship with us today!

SERVICE OF WORD & SACRAMENT

HYMN Glorious in Majesty

Christian Worship, 496

Please stand.

The grace of our Lord (+) Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of

the Holy Spirit be with you.

And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS

God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and pen-

itent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive

us.

Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I

have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what

is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment

both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in

my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to

be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and

by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the

Son (+) and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

PRAYER AND PRAISE

LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie

For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with gratitude

and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.

For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love and for

the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil, hear our

prayer, O Christ.

For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who offer

here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord.

Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and keep us

in your tender care:

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray.

O God, you form the minds of your faithful people into a single will. Make us

love what you command and desire what you promise, that among the many

changes of this world, our hearts may ever yearn for the lasting joys of heaven;

through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the

Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

THE WORD

FIRST LESSON Acts 13:44-52 | 782

A light for the Gentiles

PSALM Psalm 145 vv.1-9, English Standard Version

The congregation speaks the bolded portions of the psalm.

I will extol you, my God and King,

and bless your name forever and ever.

Every day I will bless you

and praise your name forever and ever.

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,

and his greatness is unsearchable.

One generation shall commend your works to another,

and shall declare your mighty acts.

On the glorious splendor of your majesty,

and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,

and I will declare your greatness.

They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness

and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.

The Lord is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

The Lord is good to all,

and his mercy is over all that he has made.

HYMN At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing

Christian Worship, 141

SERMON John 13:31-35 | (NIV84)

31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. 33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who in unity with the Father and the Son

is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Please be seated.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,

your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENT Our Lord Jesus has given us a holy supper in which we receive his true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of our faith. In this supper we cele-brate the gift of his redemption, we bear witness to the fellowship we share as confes-sors of the truth, and we proclaim his death until he returns.

For the reception of the bread, please feel free to extend your hand, palm up. If you are receiving the wine by common cup, feel free to assist the officiant by lifting the chalice from the bottom of the cup.

We welcome those who are members of sister WELS and ELS congregations to join us

for the Lord’s Supper. We respectfully ask that those guests who are not members of our church speak to one of our pastors before communing, in order to talk more thor-oughly about the reception of the Lord’s Supper and the unity of belief, which is one aspect of it.

The Lord be with you.

Lift up your hearts.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has blessed us

with every spiritual blessing. He raised Christ from the dead and seated him at

his right hand in the heavenly realms and placed all things under his feet for

the benefit of the Church.

Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and

the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be

praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever:

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he

had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat;

this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it,

all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for

the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

true body and blood the pledge of your forgiveness may be restored to live a

new and holy life, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
