Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Congratulations to all of the 2004 NEAFCS awardsand fellowship winners! We gather together to cele-brate excellence! Our NEAFCS winners bring a pas-sion for excellence and for educating others in theircommunities. “The quality of a person’s life is indirect proportion to their commitment to excellence,regardless of their chosen field of endeavor,” accord-ing to the famous football coach Vincent Lombardi.

We should all strive for excellence in our Extension programs to make a difference.

Our national winners represent our brightest and best in Extension Family andConsumer Sciences around the country. We celebrate our 2004 NEAFCS nationalawards and fellowship winners for their hard work, enthusiasm and creativity.Extension Family and Consumer Sciences professionals are “In Tune with theTimes” on the critical issues facing our families, communities and nation.NEAFCS is honored to sing your praises here in Nashville, Music City.

Helen Keller once said, “When we do the best that we can, we never know whatmiracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another.” Our 2004 NEAFCS hon-orees have created miracles with their Extension education programming.

FELLOWSHIPSGrace Frysinger FellowshipJan F. Scholl (Pennsylvania)During this fellowship, Jan Scholl willconduct research to create a video doc-umentary of Extension FCS historyand a book about Martha Van Rennse-lear, Extension FCS pioneer. Fourweeks travel is planned to Archives II,near College Park, Maryland and to theCornell University Archives in Ithaca,New York.

AWARDSDistinguished Service AwardCENTRAL REGION

Sandra Rae Aamlid (South Dakota)Located in the largest city in SouthDakota, Sandra serves as a nutritioninterventionist for the All WomenCount program; supervisor for EFNEPNutrition Assistants, and nutrition/food safety teacher for recertificationhours for child care providers. Her edu-cational outreach in Sun Safety

launched statewide participation. Grantdollars expand her programs.

Lana Anderson (Wisconsin)Lana Anderson believes in collabora-tion with multiple civic organizationsand agencies to address needs of par-ents and children in the area of parent-ing, financial management and nutri-tion. She uses targeted newsletters andPositive Parenting classes to reach 675parents. She also supervises paraprofes-sionals in the Wisconsin NutritionEducation Program.

Gail Louise Brand (Nebraska)The development of Seward CountyBridges, a coalition that utilizes taskforces for the benefit of youth andfamilies. Bridges has coordinated over30 community projects that earned$550,000 in grants. One example is thedevelopment of the diversion programto keep first-time offenders from enter-ing the court system.

Carol Ann Burtness (Minnesota)Carol Ann’s programming reflects herstrength at recognizing program needsand identifying issues. As an educatorwho meets participants at their learninglevels, she provides programming thatis practical for the learner. She createsan environment that is conducive to

Peggy Ann Ehlers (Indiana)This Extension Educator from Indianahas been active with the State Associa-tion and serving on national commit-tees, such as Professional Developmentand Public Affairs.

Mary Lou Elbert (Indiana)Mary Lou Elbert is a Purdue ExtensionEducator in Warrick County, Indiana inConsumer & Family Sciences. MaryLou has served Purdue Extension fortwenty two years. Her accomplishmentsinclude an IEEA 2003 County StaffAward; an IEEA 1999 Senior Award;and an IEEA Team Award.

Rosemary A. Gibbons (Illinois)Rosie Gibbons, Unit Leader of Effing-ham County, University of IllinoisExtension, provides leadership to helppeople of all ages and cultures todevelop life skills, to solve problems, toimprove quality of family life, toimprove nutrition and wellness, toenrich youth development, and toimprove agricultural and naturalresources.

Linnette Mizer Goard (Ohio)Linnette has served the clientele ofOhio State University Extension for 18years. She has a specialization in nutri-tion education and serves as co-leaderof their state nutrition issues team. Her

current programming includes workingwith day care providers and school-ageprograms in tackling the issue of child-hood obesity.

Lynda Sue Johnson (Missouri)Lynda is committed to helping peopledevelop healthy lifestyles. She led theway in MO promoting strength trainingto improve health for women. Throughhigh quality programs like A New You:Health for Every Body and Focusingon Women’s Health Forums, Lynda hasempowered 725 citizens to improvetheir health.

Mary F. Longo (Ohio)Mary F. Longo has been a Family andConsumer Sciences Agent for 12 years.Her focus areas are work and familyissues, child care and nutrition. She hasdeveloped numerous curricula, factsheets and projects to support her pro-gramming as well as to share with hercolleagues nationwide.

Linda L. Smith (Illinois)Linda Smith, Extension Unit Leader,served Christian County residents as a4-H Advisor for 12 years, then as theHome Economist for six years, and asthe unit leader since 1992. Linda alwaysstrives to meet the programming needsof residents whether in family life,youth development or agriculture.

H. Rita Straub (Wisconsin)Increasing financial literacy has beenidentified as a community need forFamily Living Education Programs inMarathon County, Wisconsin. Through

Dianne Marie Swanson (Nebraska)As coordinator and member of theteaching team of the county JuvenileDiversion program, Dianne Swansonhas taught more than 300 students andtheir parents over the last five yearshow to make better choices. She wasalso instrumental in securing the fundsto establish a Community ServiceCoordinator position.

Sharon R. Wasteney (Iowa)Sharon Wasteney uses her leadershipabilities to promote family issuesthrough multiple county and state net-works. She has authored or co-authored grants totaling over $5 millionfor Union County Extension in the last10 years. Sharon is recognized for hercreative approaches to provide mean-ingful programs for families and youth.

EASTERN REGION

Constance Mauro Barnett(Maryland)During 26 years with Extension I havechanged from focusing on Homemak-ers and sewing and home decoratingclasses. I now serve limited-resourcefamilies and child care providers.Grants support my nutrition, financeand parenting programs. During 25

years with NEAFCS I have served asstate secretary and public relationschair.

Cathy Faulcon Bowen(Pennsylvania)Cathy Faulcon Bowen provides Penn-sylvania Extension educators withinformation and programs related toconsumer and financial issues. Creditcard education, basic money manage-ment, and consumer skills needed byadults are three areas of her work.Bowen is an associate professor andspecialist in the Department of Agri-cultural and Extension Education.

Elaine Patricia Bowen (WestVirginia)Elaine Bowen has twenty five years ofexperience as an extension educator atcounty and state levels. Elaine is dedi-cated to promoting healthy lifestyles aswell as effective organizational systemsto achieve this. She is currently Exten-sion Specialist - Health Promotion withthe West Virginia University ExtensionService (WVUES).

Frederick W. Davis (Pennsylvania)For seven years, Fred has provided awide range of resource managementprograms in seven counties of South-east Pennsylvania. In 1994, he was thefirst Extension Educator nationally toreceive the Accredited Financial Coun-selor designation. Since 1998, he has

Kathleen Shimomura (New Jersey)Ten years of Extension has taken meto more places, introduced me to greatpeople and given me more experiencesand opportunities than I could imagine.My role in extension is as a public ser-vant in providing science-based educa-tion to improve the lives of others. Apleasure indeed!

SOUTHERN REGION

Faith Belmar Ballard (Texas)Provided leadership, support and train-ing for 20 counties in District 8. Servedas interim this past year for 18 countiesin District 9, supervising the Familyand Consumer Sciences program.

Nita Faye Cooper (Arkansas)Nita has worked to establish a BooneCounty Youth Leadership Program inconjunction with the local Chamber ofCommerce. Over 175 high school jun-iors have participated in the program.The Food Stamp Nutrition EducationProgram was utilized to reach families.Nutrition programs were also conduct-ed at local Senior Centers.

Alma Mancillas Fonseca (Texas)Alma Fonseca reaches out to familieswith education for building successfullife skills, promoting healthy and safelifestyles, increasing self-sufficiency, and

strengthening volunteers. Her countyprograms in child passenger safety,home buyer education, and diabeteseducation for persons with type 2 dia-betes have brought statewide recogni-tion to Extension.

Shenile Ford (North Carolina)Shenile R. Ford focused her program-ming efforts primarily on the elderlyand child care providers. Her ability tocollaborate and cooperate with diverseaudiences and agencies is reflected inher efforts to educate senior citizensand child care providers to improvetheir lives and others through research-based information training.

Elizabeth Voliva Furlough (NorthCarolina)Elizabeth (Dee) Furlough was borninto an Extension family and began herprofessional career with NC Coopera-tive Extension in 1991. Throughout heryears as a Family and Consumer Sci-ences Agent, she has providedresearch-based information to manyaudiences. Special emphasis has beenplaced on educating Spanish immi-grants.

Betty Gottler (Alabama)With more than 29 years in MorganCounty, Alabama, Betty Gottler workswith 2500+ youth in traditional 4-Hwork. Grants totaling $40,000 trainededucators to deliver character educationin the third grade and 6/7 scienceclassrooms to more than 1200 studentsover four years.

Jamie Melinda Harris (Tennessee)Jamie Harris has served fifteen years as4-H Agent in Warren County. She hasprovided leadership to 4-H members inthe areas of service learning, careerdevelopment and decision makingthrough judging team participation.Her fundraising skills and interactionwith volunteer leaders have been anasset to the 4-H program.

Jill B. Harris (Kentucky)By utilizing volunteers and communityresources, Jill Harris began a summerfeeding program for children in ToddCounty when unemployment reached ahigh level. The program has continuedfor three years and has provided over11,000 nutritious meals to youth.Financially, it has contributed morethan $33,000 to the community.

Mary E. Hixson (Kentucky)Mary Hixson has served 20 years as anAgent in rural Kentucky. Get GoingGarrard is a walking program set up toinspire and encourage movement. Dia-betes support programs, newslettersand health fairs give participants anopportunity to learn about healthissues, make wise nutrition choices andlive healthier lives.

Cathy J. Holmes (Louisiana)Served for 26 years, worked to establisha group of over 60 Family serviceagencies which meets quarterly; collab-orates to implement projects including:Health Fairs, Trade Shows, Safe KidsWeek outreaches (bike helmets, child

passenger safety), parent centers in 3schools, literacy programs, Anger Man-agement & co-parenting. Secured 3grants ($9,800) for program enhance-ment.

Mary Lucile Jordan (Alabama)Mary Lucile is a County Coordinatorand has worked with extension for 26years. She writes a weekly newspapercolumn on food and nutrition that issyndicated to 17 newspapers owned bythe New York Times. She supervisesvolunteer leaders and agent assistantsworking with 4-H Clubs and SchoolEnrichment.

Margaret A. Jover (Texas)Moving from welfare to work hasresulted in major challenges for manyfamilies. This program was designed toassist families in balancing family andwork life. Participants indicated theyincreased skills in finding a job, manag-ing finances, feeding the family nutri-tiously, and communicating more effec-tively.

Christine Kastan (Virginia)Last year over 2,400 people participatedin programming, primarily in food sani-tation and nutrition education. Chris-tine Kastan works collaboratively withagencies, colleagues, and a variety ofaudience groups to teach through themedia, newsletters, informational anddevelopmental programs. She trainsparaprofessionals and utilizes volun-

Mary Sue Kennington (Florida)Mary Sue Kennington began her 26year Extension career in Aspen, CO.After 18 years, she transferred to Flori-da. Her responsibilities have includedFCS, 4-H, fairs, horticulture, supervis-ing a canning center, and 22 years asCounty Extension Director. She cur-rently serves as one of the FCS teammembers in Orlando.

Jackie W. King (Tennessee)Working with the Expanded Food &Nutrition Education Program in twocounties, Jackie supervises 10 programassistants who work with low-incomefamilies and high risk-youth. She pro-vides training that focuses on theimportance of choosing healthy foodson a limited budget.

Carmen Joy Long (North Carolina)Carmen is working to reduce the inci-dence of childhood obesity inAlleghany County. Educatingpreschoolers, their parents and teachersof the importance of good nutritionand physical activity through hands onprograms, workshops and newsletters,she is helping families to develop goodhabits and healthy life styles.

Onehundred thirty-four agencies aredetailed in the guide.

Glenna Sue Wooten—3rd Place(Kentucky) After several years of decline in homesewing by both adults and youth, therehas been renewed interest in this activi-ty. Interest in sewing designer acces-sories grew across the state. Partici-pants have saved over $125,000 bysewing designer style purses and lug-gage. More than 10 home-based busi-nesses have started.

MoneyEd is an innovative, web-basedmoney management course for begin-ners. The entire website, including arti-cles and worksheets are purposefullyeasy reading and user friendly.
