I would like to congratulate Awaaz for the excellent front page coverage of the burial issues last month. Clearly this was a well researched and balanced piece of journalism which some other so called newspapers could learn from. Having seen the pathetic and biased ramblings of other coverage I was very impressed with the Awaaz article. This is why we need our own press like Awaaz. I am sure most people are smart enough to know when things totally blown out of proportion and will make up their mind based on proper facts. Awaaz has been serving the community for decades and long may it continue. Well done and keep up the excellent work. Name and address supplied

The Muslim Burial Committee have served the community in North Kirklees for many years without any remuneration. The attack on them by a former councillor and a particular editor (who attempted to be the Conservative Candidate for Dewsbury) is more than politically motivated. There has been an unexplained connection between the two for many years and their inability to accept the view of the electorate in Dewsbury south has lead to

laws for all but the super rich, the Editor enjoys the role of a local bully, issuing threats, and publishing unfounded allegations.

Cllr David Sheard

I was appalled to learn from the Press Weekly paper that the organisers of Muslim burials, Mr Maniyar and Mr Patel are charging more to Pakistani

‘intelligent weekly’! Unfortunately what has happened is it has started to divide the Indian and Pakistani communities up and there have already been growing fears and concerns. It’s a credit to both our communities not

families or individuals concerned to contact Mr Maniyar and Mr Patel directly or even go through your own organisation to get the facts. This is an old colonial tactic of ‘divide and rule’. How shameful. It makes one wonder whether to believe what you read in the Press anymore.

I hope Awaaz will also clarify this for your readers.

I have been following the Burial story both in Awaaz and the Press newspa-per with some bemusement.

reporter! He probably expected you to jump at the call – he must have been awfully disappointed not to have been given the red carpet treatment. Perhaps he should make an appointment next time he wants to disrupt someone busy at work. May be he thought we are all unemployed

The reason why the Press hasn’t got the answers is plainly because it has been ignored - and that’s what it deserves. It’s editor, Lockwood is not an authority on any of this. All his rants and raves seem to be half-baked truths and hearsay reminiscent of ‘pub gossip’!

An example of this can be seen by the blurb on the Press’s website about Lockwood’s book stating: “Saturday June 24th 1989, when the Muslim community rioted”. In one statement of a sentence the whole of the Muslim community seem to have been condemned. Nothing can be far from the truth. The Muslim community did NOT riot on that day – the vast majority 99.9% stayed away from the town centre in their homes, at work or at afternoon prayer. If my memory serves me right, the leaders in the community had worked hard at encouraging young kids to keep away from the town – just as they did and succeeded by making sure the youth did not come out to confront and protest at the time of the so called ‘Bradford riots’ when there was a planned fascist march through Bradford Road. So who was it that rioted on that day Danny boy? Police estimates said they were probably around 200-300 ‘anti-racist’ counter protestors. The majority of these probably came from outside the town with SWP banners. I don’t remember seeing any Muslim organisation banners! I could go on to detail what exactly happened on that day – but may be AWAAZ should do a ‘read the truth’ on this someday. This sort of trash feeds the racist and fascist appetite to the full. In fact the last time the EDL were in Dewsbury they used the title of this book to welcome their members to the town.

It’s bad news for Dewsbury!! It’s bad news for good community relations. Best thing is to ignore it for there are better worthy papers (like the Reporter series) in the town that you can trust.

COMPLAINTS have been lodged with Ofcom against a documentary aired on Channel 4 that contained factual inaccura-cies about the beginnings of Islam. Viewers were shocked at the bias and distorted programme that lacked any real research.‘Islam: The Untold Story’ by Professor Tom Holland, a historian, was broadcast on 28 August to the dismay of many Muslim viewers.

Ramadhan Foundation, condemned the programme saying it:“Makes a mockery of impartial and objec-tive broadcasting.”

Whilst iERA (Islamic Education and Research Academy) in a statement said they found the programme:

dubious and rogue scholarship rejected by established academics, both Muslim and non-Muslim alike.”

Holland claims that no historical evidence exists to support Islamic history in the seventh century casting doubt on the origins of Islam, iERA strongly disagree:

“This is categorically refuted by the existence of a number of chronicles such as the Doctrina Jacobi (635 CE), a record of the Arab conquest of Syria written in 637 CE and writings from Sebeos, Bishop of the Bagratunis (c.660CE).”

completely absurd views are to be put forward, they should be presented us such, so that the public can make real informed judgements.”

Researchers at iERA, Hamza Tzortzis and Adnan Rashid, have written a comprehen-sive paper and listed reference material including western historians in response to the outrageous claims made by Holland. With reference to documents

dating as far back as 635 CE, only two years after the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) death, something presumably Holland missed.

The broadcast and production of such a misleading programme can not be excused. The Ramadhan Foundation have asked Channel 4:“To apologise for this programme, withdraw it from online viewing and also order an immediate inquiry into why this was allowed to be broadcast.”

“We invite Mr. Holland to a dialogue with iERA in order to clear up any misconcep-tions he has about the foundations, origins and sciences of Islam.”

In response to questions asked by Awaaz a Channel 4 spokesperson said: “Islam: the Untold Story was a carefully considered and scrupulously researched documentary which examines the histori-cal context in which Islam emerged – not a critique of Islamic faith.

Islamic Scholars and Muslims were consulted with during production to

Public outcry to try and save the services at DDH, including petitions signed by over 5000 people, have shown the worries people have about the changes. But in an earlier statement Mike Potts, Chief executive of NHS Calderdale,

Soldiers Plot to kill Obama and take over U.SBARACK Obama was the target of an assassination plot by U.S soldiers, a court in South Georgia was told. Prosecutors said the four soldiers formed an anarchist group within the military and planned to assassinate the U.S President and overthrow the government.

The plot came to light after the murder of a former soldier and his girlfriend.

Private Michael Burnett pleaded guilty to manslaughter and told the court in Georgia that the victim, Michael Roark, knew of the militia group within the military and when he left the army he became a ‘loose end’. Roark’s girlfriend, seventeen year

the militia in a premeditated killing.

The group calls itself FEAR, (Forever Enduring Always Ready) and recruited its members from the military as well as former soldiers, identifying their allegiance with a tattoo resem-bling an anarchy symbol.

Burnett said he knew the group’s leaders from serving with them at Fort Stewart and agreed to testify against Private Isaac Aguigui,

militia's founder and leader, sergeant Anthony Peden and

p r i v a t e Christopher Salmon.

Burnett told the court that on the night of December 4, they lured Roark and his girlfriend to nearby w o o d s saying that they were going target shooting.

A c c o r d i n g to Burnett, Peden shot Roark's girlfriend in the head while she was trying to get out of her car whilst Salmon made Roark get on his knees and shot him twice in the head and that the killings were ordered by Aguigui.

In a further revelation prosecutor Isabel Pauley told the court the group bought $87,000 (£55,000) worth of automatic weapons and bomb making materials and plotted to take over Fort Stewart, bomb targets in Savannah and Washington, as well as assassi-nate the president.

Pauley said, Aguigui called

himself "the nicest cold-blooded murderer you will ever meet".Prosecutors say they have no idea how many members belong to the group.

The Big Pink Appeal

The world’s largest Party Rings were unveiled on a huge 3D billboard to raise money for breast cancer research. Each pink pair measures two meters in diameter and are made up of over 2,000 real Fox’s pink Party Ring biscuits. It is commissioned by Fox’s Biscuits to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Research UK’s research into breast cancer. Each giant ring took a team of expert bakers and engineers more than 150

hours to complete. Every single pink Party Ring biscuit was made both pigeon and weather resistant and was applied by hand to the billboard. The

Book Review - Alif The UnseenWritten by G. Willow Wilson, Alif the Unseen is described as a tale of religious mystery, myth, magic and political change, but it is

that reads like a page of lost history to the eyes of a historian.

This modern day adventure incorporates Islamic beliefs to provide a thrilling story

It revolves around an Arab-Indian superb hacker, known only as Alif, who helps to provide ways around the censorship of the state, letting all types of people use his services for a price.

Along with his fellow hacker ‘gray hats’ he attempts to thwart the elusive Hand that is attempting to control the Internet.

However, when he gets his heart broken, the woman he loves sends him a strange book, called ‘The Thousand and One Days’, which throws him and his friend Dina into a life of being hunted by the Hand, who wants the book at any cost.

With nowhere they can turn to, unwit-tingly they ask for help from a djinn, where they begin meandering through Islamic beliefs, the horrors of a dictator-ship, and the inevitable revolution, which became a reality shortly after Wilson began writing in the form of the Arab Spring. THE BBC has found itself at the centre of a storm over controversial new sitcom Citizen Khan. The show is about a self-appointed Pakistani community leader Mr Khan and his family and their daily life in Sparkhill, Birming-ham.

But the BBC has been accused of stereotyping and received over 200 complaints, with Ofcom now considering launching an investi-gation.

The vacuum of opinion that is Twitter was one of the mediums that helped sparked the storm following the sitcoms debut on BBC One. One tweeter wrote: “Was CitizenKhan written in 1972? The Pakistani stereotypes are just painful.”

The character of Alia portrayed by Bhavna Limbachia, as a Hijab wearing teenager who leads a double life, one as the obedient doting daughter and another of a partying teenage tear-away was at the centre of the furor over the show.

One tweeter wrote: “Caked in makeup, a sleeveless top & tight clothes? A pathetic

modesty. This isn't it. #citizenkhan.”

“Why did they have to make the hijabi like that? #citizenkhan Insult to all hijabis!” Another tweeter added.

In one particular scene Alia is seen to be

WHEN Zainab Jagot Ahmed began weaning her daughter she discovered there were no Asian cookbooks for babies and toddlers, and so she began researching traditional spices and recipes, making them as nutritious and easy to make as possible.

Now Zainab has turned those recipes into a baby and toddler cookbook, full of ideas suitable for the whole family.

Each dish includes ‘superfoods’ so every tiny mouthful packs a nutritious punch. Recipes are suitable for all the family with minor tweaks which Zainab outlines and she has also gone into detail about the health benets of the spices used.In addition to Asian favourites, Zainab has also put an Asian twist on popular dishes from around the world.
