Anand Patwardhan speaks

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has reminded that IDSFFK is relevant at a time when documentaries and short films are becoming expressions of dissent and resistance against imperialist forces.

“Documentaries and short films that discusses topics ranging from environ-mental issues to racism, and regional subjects to international concerns

IDSFFK… The Way to Oscar....The best Non Fiction film in IDSFFK 2018 will receive direct entry to the Oscar nomina-tions. have the power to influence the thought process of our society,” said Pinarayi while inaugurating the 11th edition of IDSFFK. “This influential capacity of documentaries and short fictions makes it an effective tool against imperialist in-vasions on our cultural spheres,” added Pinarayi.

Referring to acclaimed investigative

documentary maker Anand Patwardhan, who was honoured with first ever Life-time Achievement Award of IDSFFK, Pinarayi said that Anand’s works are truthful discourses on contemporary times. “One should be secular enough to fearlessly present facts as facts, and filmmakers like Anand Patwardhan is a model in such regard,” said Pinarayi.

Not just a child’s play Animation is a mode of political expression and innovation that ad-dresses and interrogates (animates) a range of cultural, environmental,

ideological, governmental and personal conflicts. Initially it was formed as a combined effort in studios. In an era of advancing

technology, even a single person can design animation mov-ies. It is one of the most powerful medium to express a real-

ity packed with humor and satire. Being a combination of painting, music, dance and many other art forms it has quickly become an omnipotent and pervasive art form.

Unfettered capital has deteriorated animation as it become the mouthpiece of cultural industry domi-nated by corporate powers. It inculcates hegemonic ideologies in the mindset of common people. Kids and teenagers are often addicted to animation movies which makes the situation worse. On the other hand,

animations are also been used as a tool to resist this cultural incursion. Animation performs a socio-politi-

cal function of resistance beyond its inherent entertain-ment purpose. In Kerala, production and circulation of

animation movies are comparatively low. Film festivals and signature films are the only platforms that accommodate the

creative space of animations. Due to the domination of MNC’s, free and democratic endeavors in the area of animation faces a crisis.

Therefore in the 11th edition of IDSFFK, animation films are given prime importance considering it as an act of political resistance.

With the screening of Lata Mani’s work at IDSFFK 2018, movie lovers are handed an opportunity to know a filmmaker whose works explores the scope of audio visual aes-thetics to convey abstract human feelings.

A Mumbai based filmmaker, Lata, is also a highly regarded contemplative writer, fem-inist historian and cultural critic. Lata com-pleted her studies from Delhi University and University of California, before encounter-ing with a serious head injury while she was working as the faculty at University of Cali-fornia. The injury restricted Lata to read, do mathematics or engage in continues narra-tive, but led her attention to experiment with sound and image and intensified her com-mitment to social justice. Her technological manipulations to envisage into the deeper

and abstract layers of human psyche result-ed in a distinctive visual language, which could accommodate the emotional experi-ence of a sensuous environment.

The 11th edition of IDSFFK will screen five of Lata Mani’s works, all which she di-rected in collaboration with Buenos Aires based filmmaker Nicolas Grandi. De Sidere, which explores a universe of alternatives through the sense of vision, sound, skin, texture and rhythm, Here Now, a visual journey between memory and loss, Noctu-rine, part I&II, an audio visual poem on ur-ban nightlife, and Poetics of Fragility, a ka-leidoscopic vision of helplessness and body aesthetics, are the selected works of Lata Mani which will be screened at IDSFFK 2018.
