1 Peter 1;3-9Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, l He has given us a new birth m into a living hope n

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that

is imperishable, uncorrupted, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 5 You are being

protected by God’s power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in

the last time. 6 You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to

struggle in various trials 7 so that the genuineness of your faith —more valuable than

gold, which perishes though refined by fire —may result in praise, glory, and honor

at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 You love Him, though you have not seen Him.

And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible

and glorious joy, 9 because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of

your souls.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Have you ever driven in a subdivision where at the end of each major road there is an off shoot which is a Cul-de-sac? These communities usually have one or two main with Cul-de-sacs running off of the main streets.

Page 6: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Have you seen any church Cul-de-sacs?

• These are the detractors from the appointed goal which delay us or even worse detract us from the real goal of restarting the church and bringing back vitality and renewal.

Page 7: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

The word Cul-de-sac comes from the French language which means “dead ends.” Dead ends stop you at the moment in time when you are moving forward only to lock you in your tracks and cause you to become immoveable.

The Definition from the dictionary is:n. Noun• A dead-end street.• An impasse.• A saclike cavity or tube open only at one end.

Page 8: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• If you are not careful when you enter a Cul-de-sac you will find yourself going round and around until you realize you are in a Cul-de-sac. There are small Cul-de-sacs and there are big ones. But regardless of the size all of these church Cul-de-sacs are a huge waste of time and a tremendous waste of resources. Resources in people, prospects, and priorities for the restarting church.

Page 9: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Restarts often face these Cul-de-sacs because there are individuals within the existing church who do not want to see the changes necessary to renewal take place so they will attempt to lead you or push you into one Cul-de-sacs after another until it wears you out.

Page 10: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• Cul-de-sacs wear the leader out and the church seeking renewal out as well.

• Energy which is needed for thing like outreach, evangelism, and restructuring of the vision and goals of a church are tapped out.

• Leaders which are not pure Church Revitalizers often get trapped in these circles of nowhere and become stale lacking the drive to lead the church to a new horizon.

Page 11: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• Many churches needing to employ a restart strategy find themselves in some sort of Cul-de-sacs realizing they are going nowhere and are in a perpetual dead-end.

• Thoughts of wanting to quit become more the norm than the exception.

Page 12: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

There is good news for you as the leader of a declining church and there is good news for the local church. You do not need to allow the Cul-de-sacs to detract you form the goal of revitalization and renewal.

Page 13: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Seth Godin in his book: The Dip: A little Book That Teaches You when to Quit (And When to Stick) says that what most of us are experiencing is the “Dip” which is the “long slog between starting and mastery” (pg.17).

Page 14: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

What is the Dip:• The portion of our work where things get hard• Those times in ministry where it is just no fun• The moments which there seems to be no win

for the church nor for the Church Revitalizer.• Those times when you want to quit

Page 15: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

What is the Dip:• There are some dips which you as the Church

revitalizer need to avoid at all cost.– Showdowns where only one wins out– My ways or the Highways moments– Patriarchal powerbrokers which refuse change– Matriarchal members which see nothing wrong with

killing the church. –

Page 16: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Recently I had a man who professes to be a strong Christian say to me: “I would rather see my church die than to see it become more contemporary in order to reach a younger generation!” That broke my heart.

Should a professed committed Christian actually believe that? I do not think so. Christ died for all not just our generation.

Page 17: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Dips can become Cul-de-sacs if you let them. Dips lead to beneficial ends while Cul-de-sacs lead to the exact same spot over and over and over again. Time after time you will find yourself back at the original starting point if you allow Dips to become Cul-de-sacs.

Page 18: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• There are many churches locked in a Cul-de-sac. Are you pastoring one right now?

• Dips take time to climb out of while Cul-de-sacs are a never ending series of wasted energy only to find ones self and the church back at the initial place it begun.

Page 19: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

What is the situation you find yourself in?

• The Dip• The Cul-de-sac• The CliffIt is vital to know where you are in your effort towards revitalization.

Page 20: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

The Dip examined : – The effort towards renewal was initially fun– You were engaged in the early beginnings– You begin to search for a short cut over the

journey.– Busy work begins to consume your efforts– Learning begins to become much harder– You move from early successes to ones much

harder.

Page 21: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

The Dip Examined

Revitalization lesson:Church Revitalizers which are successful do not just ride out the hard times of renewal. They actually lean into it. They work harder, stretch further, change up the structures keeping them form breaking through, and refuse to quit and coast. They know they are in the dip but do not act like there is nothing they can do about it. Instead they work systematically to whittle them done one piece at a time until they have moved all the way through the dip.

Page 22: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

The Cul-de-sac Examined:– You work hard but see little return for it– Things do not get better nor do they get worse– It is a state of drift where participants are happy

with status quo and prospects avoid you like the plaque

– You are spinning your wheels and stuck in a going nowhere effort

Page 23: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

The Cul-de-sac Examined:

– Your only hope is to be true to your people and if they are unwilling to make changes jump off the roller coaster and look for a church willing to change

– Dead end churches say they want to change but do everything in there powers to not change

– If you want your ministry to count for something you might as a Church Revitalizer need to leave this church which really only wants a person in the pulpit weakly.

– As a Church Revitalizer the cost of investing ones life in something that is not going to get better is just too high for a revitalizer. Allow a retired pastor hold their hands a little while longer.

Page 24: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

The Cliff Examined

• The Cliff Examined:– These are very rare and usually have led up to by an

ultimatum by either the pastor or the lay leadership unwillingness to work together

– The path the church is on seems impossible to avoid– The form and function appears impossible to quit

because you have done it that way so long that most of the participants are unwilling to change and the prospects are unwilling to settle.

Page 25: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

The Cliff Examined

• The Cliff Examined:– The eventual outcome will be either the church lay

leadership falls out with the pastor or the pastor falls out with the churches direction of its lay leadership

– The end result is that this church will eventually fall apart terribly trying to hold on until it is too late.

– The under pinning of this is an unwillingness to change on one or more parties.

Page 26: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

It is tremendously vital that you discover which situation you are in!

Your churches outcome and your outcome as a Church Revitalizer is a life and death concern.

Page 27: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

So Where is the Direction?• Cul-de-sacs and the Cliff are the enemy of the dip

because they are seeking to be permanent. • These will eventually lead to ministry failure.• The hardest thing for a Church Revitalizer to do is

to tell the church that it has not changed, does not want to change, and the final option is for you to make a change. Now not later.

• You actually know it is not going to get better and yet you hang on lacking the conviction to do something about it.

Page 28: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

So Where is the Direction?• You have a preference to not rock the boat but

the boat is sinking and you lack the commitment to challenge others to see the eventual outcome.

• Why should a Church Revitalizer stick it out if there is no eventual benefit of a changed church seeking a new direction.

• As a Church Revitalizer do you have the stuff necessary to say, “I would rather lead a smaller church over leading a larger dead one?’

Page 29: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

“As a Church Revitalizer, if it does not cost you a commitment of your complete life,

you are not on the pursuit for church revitalization and renewal but only a ride!”

(Tom Cheyney, Biblical Foundations for Church Renewal)

Revitalization Lesson from a Woodpecker!

A woodpecker can peck on 500 trees 50 times each and find nothing!

But stay busy.

Or,A woodpecker can tap 50,000 times on a single

tree and discover dinner!

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Our world is changing and we must wake up as a church:• Many churches needing a restart strategy have

failed to keep up with the changing environment around its ministry area.

• Many are closing and that sometimes happens, yet it is much better to leave a legacy and give your facility over to an association and allow it to utilize it for a restart or a new church plant.

Page 32: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Our world is changing and we must wake up as a church:• The very moment you sell your church you have

hurt the cause of Christ in that target area due to the increasing costs of property and a new churches lack of sufficient funds to purchase the property.

• You then sell it to a business or developer and the property which God had given you for the work of Christ is lost because of lack of understanding of the potential options.

Page 33: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Our world is changing and we must wake up as a church:• Many churches needing to consider a church

restart have memberships which are growing old and many of the formerly active participants have passed away.

• Young people are not drawn to your church and once they come they do not stay due to differences in what is relevant for present participants over what is relevant for newcomers.

Page 34: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Our world is changing and we must wake up as a church:• Many of the younger ones in the church are

there because of a family member and they feel stuck.

• Many younger prospects for the church are absent from the ministry or are there with a sense of disgust because they are powerless to change the rank and files idea of a culturally relevant church.

Page 35: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Our world is changing and we must wake up as a church:• Many of these churches needing a retart

strategy are not keeping up financially, numerically, nor spiritually.

• These churches are becoming dead in their forms as the lifelessness of their ministry is no longer attractive to the community it is called to serve. They have loss critical mass.

Page 36: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Our world is changing and we must wake up as a church:• Many of these churches no longer have the

ability to make disciples of others.

Statistical Realities Concerning Church Revitalization

Did you know that:•There are 344,000 protestant evangelical churches from the eight mainline denominations in the western hemisphere, which are in plateau and decline.•95% of all churches in North America average 100 or less.

Page 38: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Statistical Realities Concerning Church Revitalization

Did you know that:•Over 82% of American Churches are in decline or on a plateau.•Each year 3,500 to 4,000 churches die in North America (900 last year within our Denomination alone).

Page 39: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Statistical Realities Concerning Church Revitalization

Did you know that:•Studies have shown that churches typically plateau in attendance by their fifteenth year, and by year 35 they begin having trouble replacing the members they lose. •They have the inability to regain the critical mass necessary to regrow the church utilizing the tools and techniques they are presently employing.

Page 40: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Statistical Realities Concerning Church Revitalization

Did you know that:•50 – 60 churches in North America close their door every week.

Page 41: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Developing An Intentional Church Revitalization Paradigm

Lyle Schaller reminds us that 85,000 evangelical churches are running fewer than 50 on Sunday. • Being aware of their “critical” condition, however,

is not enough. • They have got to become convinced they need

“major” surgical treatment.

Page 42: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Developing An Intentional Church Revitalization Paradigm

We must recreate the mindset of the remaining members within the

renewing church!

Page 43: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• Realize that those churches locked in the Cul-da-sac circle of turning left or right never to come out of the perpetual motion of going nowhere, are excellent prospects for a church restart.

• Churches which have bounced from one Cul-de-sac to another for years have the chance to do something significant for Christ even in its waning years.

Page 44: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• If these churches can set aside the traditions of a few for the focus of the many which need to be reached and need to come to Jesus, then they can begin again and have one more chance for life.

• A fresh restart is often the very thing which can give life to a community which has grown weary of the existing church.

What does Restarting entail? There are five initial actions which if your church can work through these you have a greater chance of survival. If you bulk at any of these you lessen your chances for survival.– Charge– Change– Charter – Church– Control

Let’s look at them individually.

Things to Be Relinquished in Church Revitalization!

• The need for revitalization often begins with the first item that needs to be relinquished within the church and that is who is leading the revitalization effort! Most if not all successful revitalization efforts are lead by a single solitary leader directing the cause. It might be the pastor who has heard from god and has been renewed or it might be a new leader whom God raises up to assit the church.

Things to Be Relinquished in Church Revitalization!

• Perhaps the hardest area for the church in need of revitalization to relinquish is that of letting go of who runs the financial arenas of the church. This is because the continual decline of the church has lead to a extreme caution towards the use of money within the church. Those who have been there for a long time will often resent the use of finances on new ideas that have never been tried before!

• Change ($)

• The churches charter (legal constitution & bylaws stuff) is another area that is hard for the existing church to let go of. Though it is not a document that is utilized daily there is still much difficulty for long time embers to see the need to examine the documents and perhaps adjust items should there need to be adjustment.

• Long time members of a church, even one that is in rapid decline fine it hard to relinquish the reins of the church. Only a small percentage of churches in need of revitalization can do so at this point! If a church is going to be revitalized it must allow the new leadership to do things that will allow it to draw a new group of prospects.

Church

Page 57: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Things to Be Relinquished in Church Revitalization!

• If the church refuses it will make the eventual funeral of its members only a prequel to the eventual funeral of that local church. Within the western mindset there appears to be a thought that it is actually alright to allow God’s church to have a funeral just like its members. That is not why God plants and grows churches! HE wants them to thrive and not die. He wants life and to have it in abundance!

• Where the first item dealt with the one who is in charge as in a single leader, this last one focuses on who will come alongside the leader and help him grow the church. New blood needs to be infused into the revitalizing church! New leaders need to lead the new programs and work with the various ministries to give it new energy (For more on this check out The Repotting & Restarting Strategy for Revitalization by Tom Cheyney).

• The question that first needs to be considered is to what degree are you as a church willing and open to see if you can restore and revitalize your church? Can you work towards new ideas and activities that can help you get off the plateau and get growing again? Are you willing to let new leaders lead even if you don’t like some of the changes inorder for the church to get healthy and begin growing once more?

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• Restarting is about deciding to give the present church new life

• Restarting is about having the courage to begin differently so that others might join in the work of renewal.

• Restarting is about honoring the past but refusing to live in it any longer.

• Restarting is about dealing with the challenges of those who can’t let go of the things destroying the churches chance for a new future.

Page 65: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• Restarting is about seeking a day where the church might be resuscitated and resurrected.

• Restarting is about forging forward in unknown paths and trusting the Lord to see you through.

• Restarting is about allowing God to do what needs to be done with so many Churches.

Page 66: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• Restarting is about choosing life or continuing towards death.

• Restarting is about being frank with present members about their problems and challenges.

• Restarting is about forgetting traditions and following Jesus.

• Restarting is about stop lying to oneself about the current realities of the church.

Page 67: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• Restarting is about taking what is and making it alive once more.

• Restarting is about recognizing yours churches nearness of death and taking the necessary steps to avoid the situation.

• Restarting is about realizing you must die somewhat if you are going to survive.

• Restarting is about realizing that god is in the restarting business.

Page 68: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

There are some churches with a better chance of living again through a restart. Five types are most often found:• *The Church has no debt and few bills • *The Church is still in a strategic location for a work• *The Church, if it is not in the first two types, you might want to sell

property and use the money through the local association to fund a new church plant or fund a church revitalization opportunity.

• *The Church, if it sells the building, you might offer it at a reduced rate to a new church plant so both sides win and Jesus is honored.

• *The Church might be used for a new group of people which were previously not ministered.

What Kind of Church is a Good Candidate for Revitalization Using

the Restart Strategy?

Page 69: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Nine Reasons You Might Fail to Restart Your Church

1. You and your church run out of time and quit.2. You and your church run out of money and quit.3. You and your church run out of followers and quit4. You and your church get scared of all of the changes

necessary and quit.5. You and your church loose interest in church renewal and

quit.6. You and your church settle for mediocre and quit.7. You and your church think short term not long term and

quit.8. You and your church think it is an easy thing and quit.9. You and your church think of dabbling in renewal and

eventually quit.

Page 70: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

• Restarting is about understanding that the world is still quite hungry for the Lord God while the church is trapped grieving over the past.

Page 71: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

In the next 15 years there will be a growing shortage of pastors willing to fill our churches, which have low renewal potential. In our denomination we have 6,000 Southern Baptist Pastors who leave their ministries each year. More than 200 pastors are fired each month. In one recent article from LifeWay there are 70,000 vacant pulpits in America.

Page 72: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

There are Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization that addresses the current crises of leader quantity and quality:

1. A new goal of sustainable critical mass. 2. A new methodology for rebirthing

something new from the decline.

Page 73: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

In this new paradigm, we must implement a holistic process that gives strong and integrated attention to four dynamics for church renewal:•Spiritual Transformation. Experiential union with Christ is the center of a truly transformational revitalization paradigm. We must move our developing church revitalizers from the sanctuary sitting in our worship centers and exchange their posture to walking our streets sharing Christ!

Page 74: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

In this new paradigm, we must implement a holistic process that gives strong and integrated attention to four dynamics for church renewal: •Relational Transformation. Developing church revitalizers need journey! They need daily relationships with mature fellow revitalizers, role models, and examples. They need spiritual Paul’s – in the context of normal daily life and ministry. In the encouragement, support, challenge, teaching, discipline and accountability of these relationships, the shepherd’s character is built, marriages are strengthened and spiritual life is nurtured.

In this new paradigm, we must implement a holistic process that gives strong and integrated attention to four dynamics for church renewal: •Experiential Transformation. Developing church revitalizers learn by doing and not only by listening. Activity is the new norm not audience attendance. They are transformed through the fires of trail and pressure. The church revitalizer is stretched by challenging tasks that focus on church revitalization and renewal.

In this new paradigm, we must implement a holistic process that gives strong and integrated attention to four dynamics for church renewal: •Proclamational Transformation. Developing church revitalizers must work on new ways in teaching of the Word of God – in an engaging way, and woven into the ongoing daily realities of life, family and ministry.

Churches in decline and pastors of declining churches both need an assessment. Shepherds need to know what the strengths and obstacles of the church may be and the church needs to know if the skill sets necessary for a turnaround are within the leaders ability to learn or possess already.

Within this new paradigm, Church Revitalizers face the personal responsibility for embracing and building new Revitalizers as a core part of what it means to be a leader. This shift alone has the potential to raise up a new army of missional pastors equipped for the task of revitalization and renewal.

Biblically, the primary place for the development of new church revitalizers is the local church or a cluster of churches.

Page 83: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

Some of the benefits of churches building church revitalizers are:Multiplication. The church-based revitalization approach provides a paradigm or model that can be multiplied virtually endlessly with every local church or cluster of churches providing a church revitalization-learning environment for their new leaders. If every local church would build only one or two new leaders for church renewal, the quantity crisis would be over!

Page 84: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

Some of the benefits are:Holistic development. The church renewal learning process becomes considerably more effective since the local church provides the spiritual, relational and practical context for the development of the church revitalizer.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

Some of the benefits are:• The right people receive training. The

emerging revitalizer and existing church pastor who need training the most are those who are already engaged in renewal ministry. With the training focused in the church we move from training the wrong individuals to training and equipping the right people.

Page 86: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

Some of the benefits are:Flexibility. When it comes to church revitalizer development, “one size” does not fit all. Around the world, Church Revitalizers from a vast variety of cultures, backgrounds, experiences, education levels, need to be fostered. Our renewal approaches must be flexible and customizable. In addition, the environment is rapidly changing around the church today so flexibility in our approaches to renewal is required.

Page 87: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

Some of the benefits are: Self-supporting, self sustaining and self propagating. The local church provides the financial support for the learning process, thus maintaining both responsibility for and control of the development of its own emerging church revitalizers. The church must also become self-sustaining so equipping future revitalizers for the work of the ministry is essential. Then the local church must become self-propagating in its effort to regrow the work of the Lord in their setting.

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

Some of the benefits are: Ongoing skill sets and life long revitalizer development. The equipping and training is not limited to a certain period of time, but continues throughout the church revitalizers lives. Leaders are built over lifetimes!

Six Paradigm or Model Shifts for Church Revitalization

Some of the benefits are: Effective evaluation. Members of the local community who know the emerging church revitalizer and who work with him on a regular basis are the best ones to help him both establish clear goals for his development and evaluate his growth toward those goals.

Revitalization: "Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first..." (Rev. 2:5). That is the three-fold emphasis of the paradigm: Remember...Repent... Recapture the first things.

Developing An Intentional Church Revitalization Paradigm

A PARADIGM is a way of thinking. When our lives come into alignment with Romans 12:2, our way of thinking gets re-aligned with God’s thoughts and ideals.“Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”

Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church RESTARTs

Is your church stuck in what is commonly called “Pastoral Vistorship?”– These churches change pastors every three years– There is a deep seated reflection on past glory

days over the expansion towards healthy present ones.

– Is your church held together by lay people and only view the pastor as the preacher and nothing more?

– Does your voice have greater or less authority than the key lay leader of your church?

Remember groups leading ministries, which are left on

their own, will usually justify the plans that long-time members have invested in regardless of

their outcome for growth!

Use those who have been there the longest. Consider using some type of candle ceremony asking the oldest (length of membership) members to light a candle then working down to the newest. This is a very significant way to symbolize that their ministry meant something and that they were appreciated. Conclude the worship service with great hymns of faith and the Lord’s Supper. Then move into a period of “Starting Something New” led by the local Association Director of Missions.

Such a service is not easy to develop and it takes much thought before that final day of worship. Even your weakest unattached church member will find that they have memories of the former church. Questions the weeks before that allow those members of the church that is closing to vocalize their feelings will be helpful. Some questions you might want to utilize might be:

Ideas for the Closing Service

Page 97: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

• What are your personal memories of the ministries from this church?

• Is there something harder about letting go than you had expected?

• What individual recollections would you share with fellow members during these final days?

• In your view what were some of the most historical events that were part of our church’s life timeline?

Ideas for the Closing Service

Page 98: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

• What were the significant events that took place in the lives of the children of the church?

• How were the youth impacted within the community through this church?

• During each pastor’s tenure what were the significant events, which took place?

• What were the ministries that impacted the women of the church most?

• How were the men impacted though the church?

When a church revitalization restart launches its first initial service, it is vital that a new direction and tempo is set. If this is the former declining church with a new hip name you will be in trouble from the start. This is a time for the church revitalizer to share a new and compelling vision for the restart that is very different from the former rapidly declining church. During the great day of vision it is wise for the new church to ask for members to join the church as founding members and prepare to go though a new members class as an initial step towards commitment and membership. This is a way for those, which were in the former church whom decide that this new restart is for them to join right away. For those stakeholders who are not so sure once the first month of joining is over they would need to join the church in accordance with the policies set forth by the new church.

As the Church Revitalizer gives the restart participants constant hope, your compassion for the former church members, which join with you and your passion for the vision God has given, will be reassuring during the launch season for the restart. You as the leader must be the provider of hope in a church revitalization restart.

Hope defined by Webster’s II New College Dictionary, is “to wish for something with expectation of its fulfillment.” Hope means the confidence to trust in your actions and reactions. There is a desire connected with hope to see something good come about as a result of ones efforts. One of the most powerful, energizing words in the English language is the word “hope.” It’s a power that energizes us with exhilaration and purpose, as we look onward to the future. Hope takes our everyday obstacles and converts them into opportunities. Hope gives us motivation to live. Hope is a muscle that keeps us moving in the hardest stages of life.

Page 107: Avoiding the Cul-de-Sacs in Church Revitalization By Dr. Tom Cheyney.

The first epistle of Peter gives five wonderful promises of a living hope: 3)Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. According to His great mercy, He has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4) and into an inheritance that is imperishable, uncorrupted, and unfading, kept in heaven for you. 5) You are being protected by God’s power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6) You rejoice in this, though now for a short time you have had to struggle in various trials 7) so that the genuineness of your faith —more valuable than gold, which perishes though refined by fire —may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8) You love Him, though you have not seen Him. And though not seeing Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy, 9) because you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
