Dr. Michelle Howard-Vital, Ph.D. President, Cheyney University

of Pennsylvania.

Greetings Alumni,

Our celebration of the 175 years of access, opportunity, and excellence of Cheyney University is a reflection of the legacy of the accomplishments of the faculty and alumni who have represented the institution well through the 19th and 20th centuries and into the 21st century.

As we continue with the celebration of the legacy of Cheyney University, it is important to note that we must redouble our efforts to provide access to current and fu-ture generations of talented and deserving Americans who we need to ensure a prosperous and stable nation for generations to come.

We are extremely grateful to the Cheyney University National Alumni Association (CUNAA), who have raised close to one million dollars in scholarship funds to help stu-dents continue their progression towards degree completion.

In addition, it is with pleasure that I introduce alumni to our new Vice President for Insti-tutional Advancement, Ms. Nancy L. Jones, who served as Director of Development for four years at Virginia State University.

Again, I thank the alumni for investing in the future of Cheyney University. We invite you to visit campus, tour our new residence hall, and contribute scholarship dollars to the next generation of leaders.

Sincerely, Michelle Howard-Vital, Ph.D. President, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania

Wade Wilson Golf Tournament A Success The Cheyney University “C” Club held their fourth annual Wade Wilson Golf Tournament and Silent Auction at the Penn Oaks Country Club in West Chester on Monday August 27, 2012. The tourna-ment was delayed due to heavy rain, but after the rain stopped, the activities went on without a hitch. The golfers and supporters enjoyed the day which featured non-golfing events such as: cupcake and wine tasting, a tour of Longwood Gardens, a special day spa, raffles, and a helicopter golf ball drop sponsored by the Cheyney Foundation.

The Planning Committee made a symbolic check presentation to President, Dr. Michelle Howard–Vital in the amount of fifty thousand dollars for scholarships for student athletes, the band and cheerleaders. In its four year of existence, the Wade Wilson Golf Tournament has given the university over $132,000.

Tournament Chair Larry Skinner, Tournament Direc-tor Joseph DeVane and the “C” Club membership thank each and every sponsor, supporter and partic-ipant for making the 2012 Wade Wilson Golf Tour-nament and Silent Auction a huge success.

The Cheyney Foundation “Golf Ball Drop”, awarded $1,750 to three lucky winners.

CU CAMPUS ALUMNI CHAPTER’S “U R CHEYNEY”

Pam West The CU Campus Alumni Chapter welcomed the Class of 2016 on Thursday, August 23rd during the Annual Discovery Week Program. Our aim was to instill pride in the incoming class, and welcome them to the Cheyney family. The freshman followed the band, marching around the historic quadrangle. We shared Cheyney History, told students about our class and careers. After every Alumni spoke, we said,

"I AM CHEYNEY, U R CHEYNEY; WE R CHEYNEY." in unison, followed with the historic singing of our Alma Mater, arm in arm.

Men of BACA Jeffrey W. Montague, President

The Men of BBACA was founded in 1960 as an organization with an endless passion and commitment to our Alma Mater. The Bronze Association for Cultural Advancement (BACA), also known as the Men of BACA, ”The Loyal Sons of Cheyney”, is a 52 year old organization whose primary focus is to provide scholarships to African-American youth. Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, America’s oldest institution of higher learning for African-Americans, is a major beneficiary of BACA support. Over the years, BACA has provided over $900,000.00 of financial sup-port to students, the university and affiliated organizations. In addition, several other community-based organizations have benefitted from BACA philanthropic initiatives. The Men of BACA celebrates Cheyney University’s 175 years of developing educators, professionals and entrepreneurs, and its contribu-tions to society.

On August 29th, Cheyney students from all classes, gathered in Logan Hall for a Work-shop, sponsored by the Montgomery County Cheyney Alumni (PA) Chapter. Alumni Direc-tor, Gregory Benjamin ‘81 had done a yeo-man’s job posting the SASS (Scholarship Application Success Strate-gies) flyer online and on campus. He was able to register over 50 students for the Workshop!

MCCA (PA) members, Ann Adderley ‘65 and Max-ine Coleman ‘65, prepared a workshop to guide and support students in their quest for financial assistance to continue their studies. Student attendees were motivated to pursue funding from the many sources available. Scholarship Applications for the MCCA (PA) Book Award were given to Juniors and Seniors. The coup de grâce for all of us came when Gregory Benjamin an-nounced that every student who attended the Workshop would receive a $50.00 book award.
