1.0 Avid MediaDock RAID offers data protectionThe Avid MediaDock RAID is an ideal solution for the cost sensitive demands of today’s networked storage environments, offering great performance, OS independence, simplified management, and instant RAID protection for all your critical data.

Adding RAID ensures your data is protected without compromising performance. The Avid MediaDock RAID is a high performance RAID appliance which can be seamlessly integrated into an existing storage environment without regard to any particular manufacturer, type of drive, capacity or speed.The Avid MediaDock RAID is ideally suited for data intensive applications such as digital video and audio editing. Virtually any high performance computing system with a growing need for storage capacity can use the power of the Avid MediaDock RAID.The Avid MediaDock RAID is available in an industry standard rack-mount enclosure.

1.1 Avid MediaDock RAID featuresThe Avid MediaDock RAID is a high performance RAID controller which can be seamlessly integrated into an existing storage environment.

The Avid MediaDock RAID is available in an industry-standard 1U form factor for easy integration into racks. It supports next-generation media and, as a result, is equipped to handle the throughputs needed by high end video and audio applications.

Cooling and airflowOperating Temperature: 0-40° C externalHumidity: 10-90% non-condensingAir enters from the front and is exhausted out the connector side by a blower inside the enclosure which provides 11 cubic feet per minute of airflow. Ambient air near the inlets should not exceed 40°C. The unit automatically stops operation if the temperature goes beyond this threshold.

CAUTIONCAUTIONDo not block the enclosure’s vents. The Avid MediaDock RAID shuts down if overheating occurs.

Power The power supply circuit is permanently mounted within the enclosure and is not hot swappable. It has one standard IEC320 power receptacle and switch.The universal power supply provides power for the Avid MediaDock RAID board and cooling fan. The power requirements of the Avid MediaDock RAID plus the power draw of the other equipment in the rack must not overload the supply circuit and/or wiring of the rack.

Input voltage: 10/230V AC, with operating input range of 90-132V AC or 175-264V AC, 47-63Hz, single phase. The AC input range selection is automatic with no manual or jumper switchover required.Power draw: 2 amps at 110V, 1.6 amps @ 90V

Fibre Channel portsThe dual independent 4-Gigabit Fibre Channel ports connect the Avid MediaDock RAID to either a Fabric or Arbitrated Loop.• Full support for full duplex FC data transfers, FC-

AL, PLDA and public loop login.• Small Formfactor Pluggable (SFP) interface• Auto negotiates with 1-, 2- and 4-Gb/sec.

SCSI portsThe two SCSI ports connect storage devices into a Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN). Each port is totally independent from the other.The ports are Ultra 320 SCSI busses with VHDCI connector, downward compatible with all forms of single-ended SCSI and all previous SCSI protocols.

Ethernet portThe 10/100 Base T Ethernet port is accessible from the RJ45 connector. Local diagnostics are supported through a browser-based GUI, CLI, Telnet and FTP. Includes support for DHCP, Telnet, FTP and ICMP.

Serial portThe RS-232 serial port provides support for remote monitoring and management using a DB9 connector. The baud rate is programmable and preset at the factory to 115200 bps. Other choices are 19200, 38400, and 57600 bps.

LED indicatorsThe LED indicators can be viewed from the connector side and the front side of the Avid MediaDock RAID. (See Exhibit 1.1-1)

LEDs on the connector side are:A bicolor Ready/Fault LED lights green to indicate ready, lights yellow to show a faulted condition, and is off to indicate not ready.Embedded in the Ethernet port connector: a lighted green LED shows a valid link; off indicates that no link is present. A separate blinking yellow LED indicates activity.Fibre Channel port: A lighted green LED indicates link; off means no link. A separate green LED indicates activity if it is lit, no activity if it is off. SCSI ports: A green LED on each port indicates activity if is lit.

LEDs on the faceplate are:A bicolor Ready/Fault LED is lighted green to indicate ready, lighted yellow to show a faulted condition, and off indicates not ready.SCSI ports: A green LED on each port indicates activity if is lit.Fibre Channel port: bicolor LED indicates FC speed. If it is off, speed is 1-Gb; if it is green, 2-Gb, and yellow indicates 4-Gb FC. A separate green LED indicates activity if it is lit, no activity if it is off.

2.0 Install the Avid MediaDock RAIDIf you have not already completed the instructions on the Installation Guide packed with your Avid MediaDock RAID, use the following instructions to install the MediaDock RAID.

Verify the contents of your packing box• Avid MediaDock RAID. Note the serial number

of your MediaDock RAID for later use: ____________________________

• Power cord• Ethernet cable• RS-232 serial cable• “L” brackets • Setup CD including Express Power Center,

ExpressStripe, QuickNAV, Benchmark tool, Celerity driver, installation guides and Installation and Operation Manual

Install the Celerity storage adapter1 Power off your computer and install the ATTO

Celerity storage adapter in the bottom PCI-X slot of your HP XW8000 or XW8200 system.

2 Power up your system.3 Install the Celerity driver by clicking the

setup.exe file located in the Celerity folder on the included setup CD. Follow the instructions and continue to the next step.

NoteWindows® users: click OK for each warning message box presented.

Install the MediaDock RAID1 Place the MediaDock RAID on a stable flat

surface or install it into a standard 19” rack by attaching the supplied “L” brackets

2 Connect the Ethernet port to your network using a Cat 5e Ethernet cable or better.

3 Connect your SCSI cables to the MediaDock RAID II chassis in single bus mode or split bus mode. See Exhibit 2.0-1 and Exhibit 2.0-1.

4 Connect the LC-LC Fibre Channel cables from the MediaDock RAID to the Celerity storage adapter.

5 Connect the AC power cord from the MediaDock RAID to the proper AC source outlet.

6 Turn on power to the MediaDock RAID using the switch on the back of the appliance.

Discover the IP address1 Open the QuickNAV-windows.exe program

found in the Utilities directory on the CD supplied with your MediaDock RAID.

2 The ATTO QuickNAV Wizard screen appears. Click Next.

3 Highlight the Avid MediaDock RAID serial number. Refer to Verify the contents of your packing box on page 5.

4 Click Next.NoteIf a DHCP server is not available on your network, refer to the Installation and Operation Manual for further instructions.

5 Click on Launch Browser. The MediaDock RAID GUI initial welcome screen appears.

Initial configurationCAUTIONCAUTIONSelecting Commit during configuration causes all previous storage data on drives to be erased. Make sure data is backed up.

1 At the initial welcome screen for your Avid MediaDock RAID in your web browser click on Enter Here.

2 Enter the username and password in the login box. Default values are

• Username: root• Password: Password.

Passwords are case sensitive.3 Click OK4 At the Initial Setup screen, choose the Avid

Digital Video button.

5 Click Next

NoteThe MediaDock RAID supports configurations of 6, 12 or 24 JBOD drives. The drives should be attached to the MediaDock RAID and powered on.

6 All of your drives are displayed graphically on the Avid Digital Video Setup Wizard page.

If no drives are present, make sure your drives are powered on and attached to the MediaDock RAID, then click the System Scan button. If you do not see 6, 12 or 24 drives, consult the Installation and Operation Manual.

7 Click on Commit 8 A warning asks to confirm your choice: setting

up RAID groups destroys existing data. Select No to cancel the setup and return to the initial setup page. Select Yes to set up RAID groups.

Configuration may take more than two hours.

NoteOnce the initial setup is complete, close your browser and configure the RAID protected storage in your specified operating system. Refer to the Monitor page periodically to note system health.

Set up Phone Home E-mail notification of system problems. Refer to the Installation and Operation Manual for more information.

1 Open the Power Center folder found on your setup CD.

2 Click on the ExpressPCI x86.msi file3 Follow the installation instructions.4 Reboot the computer.5 After the reboot, double click on the Express

Power Center Utility shortcut on your desktop to start the program.

6 Press the Insert key on your keyboard and enter the name of the RAID group you want to create.

7 Press OK.

NoteIf you are using a single bus configuration, you must create two RAID groups.

8 Click on the Members pane.

9 Press Insert on your keyboard.10 Enter 128 KB in the Stripe Interleave text box.11 If you have a split bus configuration, select both

RAID drives attached to your Avid MediaDock RAID.If you have a single bus configuration with 12 300GB drives or 24 drives, select

• First RAID group:Channel 0 ID 0 LUN 0Channel 1 ID 0 LUN 0

• Second RAID group: Channel 0 ID 0 LUN 1 Channel 1 ID 0 LUN 1

12 Click the disk icon in the upper left hand corner of the program to save the configuration.

13 Close the Express Power Center application.14 On the desktop, right click on My Computer15 Choose Manage.16 The Computer Management screen appears.

2.1 Configure RAIDThe Avid MediaDock RAID allows configuration of storage into DVRAID, JBOD, RAID Level 0, RAID Level 1, RAID Level 10 or RAID Level 5 with partitions. RAID is a storage configuration which uses multiple drives to increase capacity, performance and/or reliability.

CAUTIONCAUTIONSelecting Commit during RAID configuration causes all previous storage data on the drive to be erased. Make sure all of your information is backed up before setting up or changing RAID groups. Initialize and verify drives

Before creating any RAID group you must initialize and verify your drives. When selected, the Avid MediaDock RAID writes a pattern to the entire drive. You may choose to have the entire initialized area read back and verified for integrity.

CAUTIONCAUTIONSelecting Drive Initialization causes all previous storage data on the drive to be erased. Make sure all of your information is backed up before initializing drives.

During initialization and verification, the Avid MediaDock RAID collects performance measurements. Performance data is available at the end of verification. This data is lost when the MediaDock RAID is powered off.1 If you are not already in the MediaDock RAID

2.2 Use partitions to create storage efficiencyRAID groups may have up to several Terabytes total data capacity. Partitions provide more LUNs without using lower capacity RAID groups.

Most host systems can only address 2 TB per LUN. Partitioning increases storage efficiency by providing more LUNs without using lower capacity RAID groups. Partitioning allows the creation of multiple logical volumes. Long LBA (64 bit addressing) allows you to take full advantage of the increasing storage capacity.

The Avid Digital Video wizard in the browser-based GUI creates partitions automatically to ensure no single partition exceeds 2TB. You can use the Custom Setup option to make a RAID group with custom partitions if required. Follow the directions in the browser-based GUI.

2.3 Use Hot Spare drives to replace faulted drivesFor those who have set up RAID configurations without using the Avid Digital Video wizard (refer to Configure RAID on page 11): if a drive in a RAID group becomes degraded or faulted, you lose some redundancy in your RAID group until a new member is rebuilt into the RAID group. However, Hot Spare devices may be designated as replacements for faulted devices without intervention by you or a host.

If you have set up RAID groups to use Hot Spares during the initial manual setup (refer to Initial manual configuration on page 12), the Avid MediaDock RAID replaces degraded or faulted drive in RAID groups without intervention by you or a host. You may set up a pool of Hot Spare devices of different sizes appropriate for your RAID groups.

NoteDrives in the Hot Spare pool should be of appropriate size to the RAID Group attached to the MediaDock RAID so that smaller defaulted drives do not need to be replaced by much larger Hot Spare devices, thus wasting storage space.

When the Avid MediaDock RAID detects a faulted device, the Controller searches the Hot Spare pool for the smallest block device of sufficient size to substitute for the faulted drive.The Avid MediaDock RAID replaces the faulted device with the device from the Hot Spare pool.The Avid MediaDock RAID begins an automatic rebuild of the RAID groups.

Add Hot Spares after manual RAID Group setupIf you have chosen to set up RAID configurations using the initial manual configuration (refer to page 12), you may choose to create Hot Spares.

Using Hot Spares in your RAID configuration reduces the space available to your RAID Group. Performance may also be lower.1 If you are not already in the MediaDock RAID

2.4 Monitor the system remotely with E-mailYou may set up the Avid MediaDock RAID to send notifications by E-mail when certain events occur.

E-mail notification allows the MediaDock RAID to send an E-mail message to you, a network administrator or other users when certain events occur with the MediaDock RAID. Serious error messages are sent immediately, while messages for less serious errors are sent every 15 minutes.• SCSI device errors such as medium error,

aborted command and hard error• Device transitions from online to offline• Critical and warning temperature conditions• Critical and warning voltage conditions• Power recycle/power failure conditions

Warning messages include• device down• medium error• abort commandCritical messages include hard errors.Warning levels: • All means warnings, critical events and

informational messages are sent.• Critical means only critical event E-mails are

sent. • Warning means only warnings and critical event

E-mails are sent. • None means no E-mails are sent.You may send E-mails to up to five E-mail addresses and designate which conditions prompt each E-mail notification.

For example, a recipient with a critical severity level only receives critical messages and not warning messages. When an event occurs that warrants E-mail notification, the MediaDock RAID sends the message; it cannot respond to a rejection by a server for an invalid address. Ensure all E-mail addresses are valid.1 If you are not already in the MediaDock RAID

2.5 System setup optionsDefault values are appropriate for most configurations, but may be modified for your needs.

NoteYou cannot change the user name or password using the browser-based GUI.

It is best practice to change the default username and password to a username and password significant to you.

3.0 Rebuild degraded RAID groupsIf a SCSI drive has an error, fails or is disconnected, the RAID Group is reported as degraded; performance may suffer and data protection may be lost. RAID Rebuild replaces data from the failed drive to a new drive.

If a SCSI drive has an error which degrades the RAID Group you should replace the drive with the error with a known good drive. The Avid MediaDock RAID uses parity protection to rebuild your RAID Group without loss of data or performance.1 You receive an E-mail notification from the

MediaDock RAID as set up previously using the Phone Home error notification (refer to Monitor the system remotely with E-mail on page 15).

2 If you are not already in the MediaDock RAID GUI, type the IP address of your MediaDock RAID, as found in Discover the IP address on page 6, in a standard browser, click Enter Here and type in your username and password.

RAID rebuild priorityThe MediaDock RAID prioritizes RAID rebuilding based on drive activity. If there is heavy drive activity, rebuilding is given a low priority to provide maximum performance to your application. If no activity is detected, rebuilding is given a high priority so that rebuilding takes less time.

NoteWith no drive activity, a 146 GB drive takes about 60 minutes to rebuild. With drive activity, a 146 GB drive may take up to six hours to rebuild.

4.0 Use diagnostics to determine drive health, statusYou may determine the performance of drives attached to the Avid MediaDock RAID using various displays and tests in the Avid MediaDock RAID GUI.

The following instructions assume you have already set up RAID Groups. Refer to Design RAID groups on page iii of the Appendix. and Configure RAID on page 11.The Avid MediaDock RAID collects various metrics to measure performance for physical drives attached to the appliance during normal system operation and drive initialization and verification.

CAUTIONCAUTIONNew performance data is updated every 60 seconds which impacts performance slightly, even if you minimize the browser window. Exit the browser GUI completely whenever you need maximum performance.

When you open the Avid MediaDock RAID GUI, the Health and Status Monitor page appears. Clicking on Details gives you added information about each parameter on the Configuration Display page.

Verify storageVerify the status of attached storage to identify drive issues after drives have been initialized. If the verify operation detects an error, the Avid MediaDock RAID tries to re initialize the drive, erasing information stored on the drive. Be sure to back up data before performing verification.

Once the Read-only test has completed, system operation returns to normal.1 If you are not already in the Avid MediaDock

6.0 Use the best interfaceThe best way to manage, monitor and configure the Avid MediaDock RAID is to use its browser-based GUI, but you may use a terminal emulation program or Telnet.

Use the browser-based GUIUse the browser-based GUI to manage, monitor and configure the unit. The choices you make lead you from screen to screen. Choices which are not available are greyed out.1 Work from the computer attached to the Avid

If a list of all available commands does not appear on the screen, review the steps in this section, check the cable, or contact service personnel until the problem is solved. If you have difficulty using the serial port, verify that you have the correct settings and that your serial cable is less then two meters in length.

Use TelnetUp to three Telnet sessions can be conducted simultaneously. A serial port session can use the CLI while Telnet sessions are open. Whichever session issues the first “set” CLI command can continue to issue set commands, while the other sessions can only issue “get” commands or display information. Once a connection is established, refer to CLI provides ASCII-based interface in the Appendix.

Appendix A Cabling optionsAdditional information to physically connect ports to devices and to your SAN.

SCSI cabling Cables and devices must be chosen to maximize performance and minimize the electrical noise from the high-speed data transfers available with the SCSI protocol. Cabling and termination methods become important considerations for proper performance. SCSI cables and devices are subject to specific length and number limitations to deal with electrical problems that arise at increased operating speeds.

Cable typesUse high-quality cables rated for the type of SCSI transfers required: well-insulated SCSI cables ensure error free communications. Try to keep cable lengths as short as possible to ensure higher signal quality and performance.

NoteUltraSCSI is very sensitive to SCSI bus noise, cable distances and the number of devices connected on the SCSI bus. Carefully connect your devices when working with UltraSCSI.

Connecting SCSI devices to SCSI portsSCSI ports connect SCSI storage devices to the network. Each SCSI port is totally independent from the other SCSI port.Each SCSI port is a bus capable of supporting 15 devices and each bus is capable of 40, 80 or 160 MB/sec. (Ultra, Ultra2 or Ultra160) transfer rates.

Each SCSI bus auto-negotiates the appropriate sync rates with the connected devices. If slower devices are mixed with faster devices, the bus communicates at the rate of the slowest device, thus wasting the performance capabilities of the faster devices. Connect slower devices to one SCSI port and connect faster devices to the other port.

The Avid MediaDock RAID supports a wide variety of SCSI storage devices including stand-alone drives, removable drives, JBODs, RAIDs, tape, CD and DVD drives, changers and libraries.1 Connect the cable from the SCSI device to a

VHDCI SCSI port on the Avid MediaDock RAID.

2 Check the type of cable, cable length limit and number of devices recommended for the port. See Exhibit A-1 .

Keep cable lengths as short as possible to ensure the highest signal quality and performance. These cable lengths include the wiring inside the devices.

3 Set the IDs of the SCSI devices connected to the Avid MediaDock RAID to a value other than 7.

Use a sequential ID starting at 0 for each device. The SCSI port has an internal factory setting ID of 7, typical for a SCSI initiator device.

4 Terminate the SCSI bus after the last device. The Avid MediaDock RAID is terminated internally.

Fibre Channel connectionsThe Fibre Channel port connects the Avid MediaDock RAID into either a Fabric or Arbitrated Loop.

The Avid MediaDock RAID uses optical SFP connectors and multimode fiber optic cable.

Make sure all cables are anchored securely at both ends with the proper connectors. Use the shortest possible cable length for best performance.

Ethernet connectionUse at least Cat 5e cable to connect the Ethernet port to your network.

NoteFor best performance, all cabling, network interface cards (NICs), host adapters (HAs), and network switches must be Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), and at least Cat 5e certified. Most standard offices use 2-pair wiring which is not compatible. GbE requires 4-pair wiring.

For best performance, support for 9014 byte jumbo frames should be available for all switches and host equipment.

Before you begin installing the Ethernet ports, be sure to check or complete the following:• Be sure your host system(s) is set up and

configured.

• Your host system can use any of three different types of cards: a network interface card (NIC), a TCP/IP offload engine card (TOE), or a storage network interface card (SNIC).

• The driver file from the CD included with your Avid MediaDock RAID installed on your host.

• The switch has been configured to forward UDP broadcast messages.

• The minimum requirement for Windows-based browsers is Internet Explorer 5.5 or Netscape Navigator 6.2. The minimum requirement for Macintosh browsers is Internet Explorer 5.2 or Safari 1.2.

Appendix B Design RAID groupsThe Avid MediaDock RAID provides readily-available RAID functionality to existing SCSI storage independent of the product form-factor or the transport protocols used to access storage.

CAUTIONCAUTIONSelecting RAID configuration causes all previous storage data on the drive to be erased. Make sure all of your information is backed up before setting up RAID groups.

The Avid MediaDock RAID allows RAID functionality. In general, the process begins with individual drives also called block devices.

NoteIf a drive has corrupt or outdated configuration data, that drive cannot be assigned to any RAID Group. Ensure all drives to be assigned to RAID groups are configured properly. Refer to Configure RAID on page 11.

A RAID Group is a virtual, independent single drive whose data is written to physical drives according to a RAID algorithm. A RAID Group may be organized into partitions representing subsets of the total storage available. The storage accessible through a partition may then be mapped to an Avid MediaDock RAID front-end unit such as a LUN. Each mapped partition appears as an independent block drive to a host. The Avid MediaDock RAID supports DVRAID (Digital Video RAID), JBOD, RAID Level 0, RAID Level 1, RAID Level 10 and RAID Level 5. DVRAID (Digital Video RAID)Digital Video RAID provides parity redundancy for your data. Optimized for performance for the high data transfer rates required in digital video environments, DVRAID is ATTO Technology proprietary technology which supports the editing of uncompressed 10-bit High Definition (HD) video and multiple streams of real-time, uncompressed Stand Definition (SD) video.DVRAID is used with the Avid one-button setup.

JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) configuration allows many individual drives to be available for normal storage operations with no special data protection. Using the Avid MediaDock RAID allows you to concatenate several individual drives into one large drive, then partition it as required. A partitioned JBOD drive can be constructed as a special case of a RAID Group. When multiple physical block drives are assigned to a JBOD RAID Group, their storage areas appear as a single spanned area of storage. The Avid MediaDock RAID supports 1 to 32 drives per JBOD-configured RAID Group.

RAID Level 1RAID Level 1 ensures the security of data by writing the exact same data simultaneously to two or more different drives. This application is for users with critical data which cannot be lost or corrupted due to the failure of a single drive. With RAID Level 1, the host sees what it believes to be a single physical drive of a specific size: it does not know about the mirrored pair. The Avid MediaDock RAID manages where data is written and read, allowing one drive to fail without the host knowing it has failed. RAID Level 1 is used in applications containing mission critical data. The Avid MediaDock RAID supports an even number of 2 to 32 block drives per RAID Level 1 group.

RAID Level 10 RAID Level 10 increases data transfer rates while ensuring security by writing the exact same data simultaneously to two or more different drives.
